I figured I opened up a thread for those of us waiting for Michael to recover fully from his accident and continue his passion of building great amps, I heard he was trying to get back very soon after the accident - amazing.
I was talking to a friend of mine last night that had a similar accident with a table saw that injured his left fingers, it did not end good and they had to remove his pinky and are trying to save his ring finger.
So share your stories of what you are doing to help the anxiety, how far away are you from possession, and lastly have you bought another amp to tie you over ( I think I will ):D
I ordered an X10 on Jan 29th and I will post the date when I receive it. For others that have ordered and received their amp already, it would be nice to get their order/delivery dates as well.

I got my name on the list in Feb. I originally had a 65 amps London 212 combo which I sold and got a Morgan DAG15, which is a fantastic little amp and has left me plenty content for the time being. Though, I am still anticipating getting the Xits.

Had an email out to them about 5 days ago, but no word back yet.

Thats good to hear, thanks! I've been considering other stuff in the meantime, but keep talking myself down. Confident that the X10 will be a keeper when it does finally arrive.

I should have been very close to the top of the line but have not heard back from Stu at Fat Sounds. I knew nothing about the accident. Hope he recovers soon. My amp can wait. There are more important things in life.
Anyone got their amp since the last post?

Did you see the x50 for sale in the emporium with the lifting and bubbling chilewich covering? It is supposed to be a prototype so maybe he bonds the chilewich differently now.

Did you see the x50 for sale in the emporium with the lifting and bubbling chilewich covering? What's up with that? Is it just that one amp that's having that problem? It is supposed to be a prototype so maybe he bonds the chilewich differently now.
I have talked with Michael about this bc my old cab did the same thing. It was a problem that resulted from the earliest glue/bonding agent he was using with the chilewich.
I think it was discovered and resolved in early 2010.

I agree, how is it the someone who ordered on Jan 21 has their amp as of Nov 24 but people that ordered on the Jan 19th and 20th still do not have amps today(1/12/11)? How does this happen?

It's possible that he had yards and yards of chalk chilewich on hand but no smoke chilewich. I ordered smoke, (actually I ordered pepper but it's discontinued). Assuming he can't afford to keep an inventory of all of his supplies until the next batch of funds come in, ( like most builders starting out) then there would be the possibility of amps being shipped out of sequence.

I guess the lesson here (for me at least) is, "Ask which fabric results in me getting my amp the fastest!"
:D
well mine is chalk and it'll be a year on the 27th for me. not really holding my breath. i'd love to get the dang thing already but i'm reluctantly being realistic and tempering my eagerness. even after an email saying the cab has been built already and they're hoping to have it in early january if i get the damned thing in the next month or two i'll be amazed.

it is most definitely worth the wait
frustration has finally gotten the best of me. formally put in my request to cancel my x10 order just now. no offence the stu and the fat sound gang of course. i just got tired of waiting after a week shy of a year and ended up picking up something different i know i like instead of the perpetual wait to simply check out the x10.
for those of you remaining on the list you just got one step closer to your amp.

I just got my X10 after a year long wait. It's a great little AC15 with a lot of different tones in it. Probably the best feature though is that it sounds so huge for being so lightweight and (reasonably) small. Perfect for my gigging needs. In a nutshell, my initial impression after playing it for a couple hours is that it's basically a lightweight, better looking 15 watt Matchless with maybe 10% more tonal versatility. This thing will not take out the trash, get you a better girlfriend or turn you into The Edge. It's just another amazing sounding Vox from a US boutique shop (how many of those are there now????).

Well that sounds like a pretty good endorsement to me. In other posts you've said that you've owned "just about every major Vox-style boutique amp from manufactures including Matchless, Bad Cat, vintage Voxes, 65 Amps, Divided By 13, Fulton-Webb, Bogner, Top Hat" and yet you feel that the X10 is a great little AC15 that's lightweight. That's all I need to hear. What more could I ask for? It's a Great little AC15 that's lightweight, with a hand built cabinet, MM trannys and it's a great price. Works for me!

I got an email from Stu the week after Christmas I think saying that the amp was being completed. I got a call from him a couple weeks later saying they had received it from Michael and a couple days later they shipped it. So I guess around 3 weeks from the time I heard it was basically almost ready to when I got it.
I called Stu probably every 2-3 months just to check on the status. Every time I called I told him I wanted first available and that I didn't care what color etc... So maybe that helped/hurt??? Don't know.

One would think xits would get the amps out in order they are placed and not per whatever order from a dealer. Xits doesn't make much profit from dealers. With that in mind, I can't imagine why Fat Sound is getting amps and direct orders are on a wait.
Even after cutting the finger, he is putting out amps again. So, it is business decision. My thought, it's not a good decision. Time to get it in gear and get them done, isn't it?
no dog in this, just find it sad. Xits stage left.

Nah, don't throw eggs... I met Michael at the Austin amp show a year or so ago and he's a really nice guy. That was at the time when the orders were really starting to pour in. He was really overwhelmed then and I believe had just gotten an assistant to help him. I tried to get him to let me buy one of his demo amps at the show but he wouldn't do it because he thought that would be unfair to the others on the waiting list. So I think he generally wants to do the right thing.
Oh yeah... I took the amp to a gig last Friday and it sounded great but I couldn't get quite as much headroom out of it as I wanted. Mine has the greenback so I may switch to a slightly more efficient speaker and see if that cleans it up just a little.

Michael was convinced to sell these X10's at a ridiculously low price by people who shall not be named. The problem was, it costs Michael more to build these than what he is selling them for (At least the initial $975.00 or so amps)
The guy can barely survive, If I were him I would say screw it and cancel every X10 order or just reprice it. Those who got in on that cheap price and actually got their amp got the deal of a lifetime those who are still waiting will be lucky to get one. He will not survive if he has to build out 200+ amps losing money. I played an X10 and it was a great amp but the truth is...it is a small combo that sounds great but it will not redefine your tonal existence. I think this long wait makes these amps more hype at this point.
If anyone has seen the build quality of the Xits stuff they would understand. The X50 is so freakishly overbuilt (In a good way) I can't see how he does not get $10,000 for them when considering the Two Rock Prices. Anybody should be happy to pay $1,500+ for an X10.
As far as the X50 the dude hand cuts and drills 1/4" yes 1/4" pieces of billet aluminum and constructs the chassis with it, he had custom metal stamps made for his logo, labeling etc, he pre threads all chassis holes such as the input jacks so there are no nuts holding anything in place, it is all true PTP like Mark Sampson's amps. He has custom Mercury transformers, the most expensive everything in terms of caps, resistors etc. On the combos he uses Vandenhul speaker cable, the cabs have walnut wood bracing, chiliwich covering, hand made custom leather handles, real ebony wood front panel. I have seen a lot of amps in my time but nothing like these. All that said in the end they sound even better than they are built!
I hope he survives from this X10 debacle because his amps are special. I imagine these amps would reach Trainwreck and Dumble status if he were to retire, they are that good!!

I totally agree with this. I think (and have said many times) Michaels amps will be worth freaky money one day. There isn't another amp that is on par with the xits stuff when it comes to price. I have an X100 coming and know I wont have it for awhile longer because of this x10 crap. Don't get me wrong, the x10 RULES and all but it is really slowing down the "real" xits amps.

X10 live and in action... If you wanted to hear an X10 in a band setting at a medium sized club gig check out these clips. We setup a couple condensor mics and captured a recent show at a club in Austin with a decent PA. All the lead guitar stuff is the X10 either straight or with an old Way Huge green rhino I bought ages ago. The other guitar player is playing his Fulton-Webb 18watt head. Check the songs with "(live)" in the name. The studio cuts were done before I got the X10.
**** Sorry, guitar is a mid-70's 335 stock with added bigsby. ****
Hope you enjoy...also, hope it's ok to post a link to a band site. If it's not just let me know and I'll delete.

So if each shipment/order contains three guitars and it takes over 3 months to build thats one guitar/month. Good luck to those further down the list. I think everyone on the list deserves an answer. The same thing has happened to me multiple times and, if you read through the X10 threads, you'll see lots of people in the same boat. I think Stu is just overwhelmed. I'm not making excuses for him - I think he's handled it poorly by not responding to all of the folks.
The defenders of Stu/Fat Sound will come out and say, "But he would have to spend two hours a day responding to all of the emails/calls and he would never get any work done at the shop! There are only three people there!"
I disagree - it won't take "two hours a day" to respond to all of the emails/phone calls because it's the same people writing in over and over b/c no one is responding to them! I doubt there are more than 10 people on the "bought" list who are close enough that they are writing in on any given week. So each week 10 new people write in - and I think that's actually being generous. What's more likely is that 30-40 people a week are writing in b/c no one has responded to their previous 5 emails! Responding to 10 new people a week would take an hour a week. No fun, sure, but it's better than taking a PR beating (like having people get angry and talk about how you won't answer the phone/email on forums).
I think you fix something like this by having a better system:
1) You have to clear the backlog, first and foremost. Hire a temp/intern and have them help out in the shop for a full 12 hour day so that Stu/whoever can spend 12 straight hours answering calls and sending emails to let people know where they are on the list (or do it on Sunday). Bill Michael for the intern's time while you're at it.
2) After that's done, talk to the mods here at TGP and ask for a locked thread that only Stu can edit. Send an email out to everyone on the "Bought" list telling them that Fat Sound will send all future notifications of orders/received amps/list position on the thread. Stu updates the thread 1x a week or more with the names/dates/info. No more having to respond to 10 emails or phone calls a week (or ignoring them and pissing people off). You still will have some coming in ("Can I change my color from black to orange?") but it's nowhere near the overhead of what it is now.
Right now Xits is coming off looking like a champ ("Michael cut off a finger and is still producing great amps!") while Stu/Fat Sound is getting a lot of flack ("Stu won't answer my emails/calls"). This should not happen - it should a success story for both ("Stu is awesome - he answers my emails nearly instantly!"). I think it's just a system/workflow thing.

If you guys are tired of waiting, you could just cancel and speed up the process for the rest of us;)
All kidding aside, I understand Stu's and Micheal's dilemma. Nobody expected these types of volumes, which makes it hard to handle. On the other side, they still gotta step up to the plate and take care of business and honor all the requests, etc. Have there been mishandlings? Sure. But, at the end of the day, I just want a good sounding amp and am willing to wait. For me personally, I view my Xits order like being on the Timmy list(though PaulC doesn't take down payments... but then again, amps are a different animal than pedals) and I am just waiting for my name to be called up on the list.
Dave - I would think a completely paid in full item should receive some priority over us chums that only have a portion down, just my 2 cents. Here's to hoping you get your amp soon.

I got some lame email from someone named Judy saying that 18 months after paying in full that they couldn't give me a target completion date.18 months with $1000ish of my money and no target completion date? That's just flat out disrespectful :(

I've been on the list since February 7th and in the meantime I've emailed Stu several times. He's responded every time. The responses haven't always been what I wanted to hear (I thought I was going to be waiting for a few months not over a year), but he's always been punctual and very polite.
I think what Stu should really do is just setup a page on his website (kind of like Faustine did for the Phantom) that shows what number everyone is at and then Stu could just update the page when he gets a shipment and we would never have to bother him.

On January 15 I was number 28 on the list....pretty close, but still a long wait I'm afraid. I should be....should be...under 20 by now I would think. I can't believe I'm almost up to a year since I plunked down my deposit, but I'm too close to jump now. It better be worth it because I've been thinking about it more and more lately.

2tone,
Did you order direct? I ordered direct on Jan 12 and have been told 6 weeks to 3 weeks ever since then! I found it a lot easier to wait when I either talked (once after placing my order) or heard directly from Michael as it reminded me I was dealing with an artist, builder and really nice guy. Not that there is anything wrong with people handling his correspondence, it just removes the personal touch for me.

Just to piggy back on what Trucks said, I do feel better when I've heard from Michael. Although, it has been a long while. I ordered direct also on Jan 11 (2010). I just keep waiting patiently, what else is there to do? I'm waiting on 2 amps... an X50s ordered in November 2009 before the BIG X10 rush, and then my X10.
If I thought Michael was a sluggard or trying to make off with everyone's money I would be outraged. But from all my past interaction with Michael, he is a cool guy and a HARD worker. I honestly believe he is pumping these out as fast as he can. Products of the highest quality aren't often 'pumped out' too quickly in any market. There is a reason these amps are so coveted. They are really, really great. ...I'm still believing it will be worth the wait...

I've waited months for amps, but my first custom guitar order was just placed in Jan. I ordered a Lentz and what a fantastic experience that has been! He's ordered some Tung Sols and it should now go out next week. He is biasing the amp for me there (I've never biased one), otherwise I'd ask him to just send it and I would bias it.

A 2-3 year wait is not that uncommon in the boutique amp and guitar market for limted runs. Most don't ask for money until your are close, at least within several months, and usually only a deposit.

My wait ended! I got the amp yesterday.
So far, I am amazed. It is visually stunning and screams of careful and thoughtful workmanship. It is clear a lot of love when into building this amp. As I said before, Michael is an artist.
There are a vast amount of tones. There is enough bottom end to make anyone happy. I spent most of the time so far dialing it back to balance the tone (all the controls seem to be interactive). There is great note separation and articulation. The amp is very touch sensitive and has a surprising amount of gain on tap. The latter I wasn't expecting. The sparkle switch with my tele creates a 3-D shimmer that needs no reverb or anything else. Similarly, my R9 really makes the amp speak and seems to be a great match. There is a lot to explore with this amp and I hope we are all comparing notes soon!

The last I heard on the X50 was that my XCab for it was being built in early Feb. Having played the X50 already, this one has been extremely difficult to wait on (17 months). But it seems the X10 waiting time is around 14-15 months as of now. Seems like forever, but when your day finally comes it's sure a great feeling.

Hey Scott,
Yes the X10 is fantastic! Here are my 'initial' impressions... subject to modification. :D
Having owned the X50 and two Sadie's, I would describe the X10 as something of a love child of the two.
The X50 is the most touch responsive amp with the most beautiful chimey, warm, rich cleans I have played. When pushed, the overdrive is like no other amp... like Vox on steroids, then refined.
The Sadie is a little less greasy, a little more compressed, not as much bloom behind the notes as the X50.
So the X10 is somewhere in between. HUGE sound, but not the presence or special magic of the X50 and . But it's got it's own magic for sure. For the price and portability of the X10, I'm astounded.
Guess that explains the year plus wait!

Hey Dave,
I ordered a Sadie on 2/26/2010 (50% up front). After numerous e-mails, I finally got an e-mail response from "Judy" on 3/7/2011 in which she said- "Michael is working on your amp right now. He will be in touch soon. Thanks for your patience and message." I haven't been contacted again.
Subsequently, I've sent two more e-mails (I figure one a month isn't harassment) and nada...
I'm not really anxious about the situation any more. We're all in the same boat. At least I think/hope that we're all in the same boat. I would hate to learn otherwise.

Prepaid orders and/or 50% down on an order -- GREAT way to get others to fund your business without having to bring in investors and give up equity. It's an even better business model when you can get people to fund your business and give you free money 1-2 years in advance of receiving anything in return!

Unless you are seeing something I'm not seeing from the gut shots he isn't doing anything out of the ordinary. Yes the cabs look nice but I know of at least one other builder who can source that material. And you never have to wait more than 6-8 weeks.
Lance has even posted before that he ended his relationship with Michael for this very reason and that was WAY before he was back logged by over 10, 20, or 100 orders.
I hope the wait is worth it....

I ordered one before the Greg V video & before the two price increases. Stu has worked with new builders before (I think that he was an early adopter of Swart amps). And has probably dealt with his share of growing pains with guys who are artists more than businessmen. My wait time was miniscule compared to what you guys have endured and... anything that has that much wait time might have very high (perhaps unattainable) expectations attached to it. Looking back, my favorite amps, ever (and this is going back to the Sixties) were ones that I didn't expect much from.
A beat-up Silvertone, cheap Magnatone with fake crocodile covering and a few others really made me smile. I once had a Carr that just didn't do it for me and I sold something that I liked better just to pay for it. So, there is a chance that after all the wait, you just won't bond with the amp. On the + side, it looks like you can get your $ back,no problem!

I guess for me the waiting, although obnoxious, isn't a big deal as I mostly play at home so I'm not in dire need of this particular amp. Also, as Stu has mentioned several times, anyone can get their deposit back at any time. I am still excited - seems like a really cool amp and if I don't like it I can sell it and at the very least break even.

I don't know how the guys, that pay a deposit and wait upwards of two years for any piece of gear, can stand it.
Is any piece of gear worth that kind of business?
I don't think money should exchange hands until the amp is started.
You should not be expected to pay while other peoples amps are being built.
OK, maybe a hand built guitar but I would have to be kept in the loop with the builder with frequent updates.
I don't think it is the amp builders fault all in all.
They suddenly get popular and are the flavor of the year so they get back logged.
What do they do? Hire and train more people or keep the business small and have a waiting list?
There are several boutique amp builders that have expanded operations and seem successful at it.
But not all amp builders are good business men.
I heard about the Xits owners accident and that is terrible.
Wishing all good luck with their orders, I know I couldn't do it.

I'm sure they're out there, but it's hard to think of other industries where companies are so often casually unprofessional as guitar gear. Taking money and then not reaching out to customers with updates, acting annoyed when they enquire, not responding to emails or phonecalls - there's just zero excuse for it. Really surprising that anyone is willing to give a company money knowing they're in for a year or two of getting jerked around, especially when there are so many great amps in the Emporium sitting at crazy low prices, that's just TGP I guess.....

Out of curiosity that y'all waiting can help me with - what was the X10 going for when you ordered yours? I had read somewhere how when Xits stuff first popped up it was incredibly reasonable...but I can't confirm. I know that's a bit subjective but still curious...cheers!

I ordered one when they were $989 in December of 2009 at that time I was told that there was one X10 order ahead of mine. I got my amp in Feb of 2010

I don't know why you guys support this type of business activity...I would have canceled 10 times by now.

I got through my wait thinking of it as an investment. I paid under a thousand and could have easily sold it for $1600-1800. Where else do you get a decent return on your money these days?!
The fact is that I (and several owners) have kept the amp despite the potential profit. I think that speaks pretty highly for the amp.
Also, I ordered directly from Michael. Speaking to him, you realize he is going to produce an amp up to his standards regardless of the amount of time each one takes. Try finding that elsewhere, too.
All in all, they are worth the wait. IMHO and direct experience.

I got in at a good price and believed I'd have the amp in a few months. Certainly you don't think I expected to be waiting two years when I plunked down my deposit. Should I have known the builder would slice his fingers off in a table saw accident or any of the other personal trials he went through.
Now that I'm so close to getting my amp for less than a grand what should I do? Call it quits?

I know that none of you went into this knowing or even dreaming that is would happen. And with all due respect, i'd cancel out of princple. In fact, I did.

I just plunked down a deposit on a Sadie combo and the wait is at least 18 months, quoted as up to two years. I have no problem doing this as I have had my XITS 10 for awhile now and I am in love with this amp!!! As a guy who loves vintage AC15 tone (I own an old 1 x 12" vox), I want a hand-wired point-to-point amp that is based on that EF86 tone and I don't mind waiting for it. No one freaks out at long guitar waits, I'm okay with this. These amps are amazing and the only drawback is that I didn't get to experience one earlier. As soon as I played one, it was a no-brainer for me. A perfect match.

How long have you owned the X10? Due you have a blue in it? I ordered with a greenback, I'm not sure I'm going to like the greenback in an X10 but alas I never heard an X10 in person anyway.

Well, gents, it's time for me to leave this wonderful support group. A little after two years on the Xits waiting list for something or other, Michael delivered my final Xits piece yesterday: a pine XCab. I wish you all the best and hope that Michael delivers your amps and cabs with godspeed!

i don't know how i missed the whole xits debacle or even knowing about these amps. especially since i practically live on these forums. but the x10 sounds killer. For $1000, i'd probably wait 2 years+ for one too.

It would have been nice if he was more forthcoming about when people are going to get their amplifiers. And then saying that if you want to send us money we will take it, well that seemed like bad form to me.

Whoa on that interview... I don't even know where to begin with all of the nuances he gave off on various subjects! Overall, I just couldn't get a read on him- is he simply completely exhausted and actually embarrassed about the wait situation, or is he just a real short answer turd who doesn't wont use Chilewhich anymore cause Morgan is using it and you can send him money of course but he doesn't know when you'll get you amp?

Man i've gotta say it. I may have given up my right to an opinion here when i got off the Fat Sound waiting list (after 16 months), but that interview gets my blood boiling a bit. Again, might not be any of my business, but that whole thing just comes across as horribly insensitive to his customers, his dealers, and even a little bit to prospective customers. Just talking out my ass here, but maybe he just personally feels like there is no damage control needed in this situation, and that he's entitled to do whatever he feels like doing, the ol' 'artist' approach to commerce. God knows i respect that, but for me personally, as someone who has worked with the public my whole adult life, part of me has the need to always take care of the consumer, and there are many obvious examples of people in his business (on this forum, and not) who run their guitar/amp/pedal companies with the same ideal. That interview feels like a bit of a slap in the face, and if i had stayed on the list up to seeing that interview, i would have canceled my order immediately after seeing it.
Hope all of that doesn't come across as too rude. I owned a used X4, and was very, very excited to be a X10 owner, but it didn't happen, and i think maybe i'm better off for it. Good luck (again) to anyone who is waiting.
cheers

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that every one of those cabinets except for an older, borrowed X10 was completely empty - no chassis, no speakers, nothing. Talk about things that make you go hmmmmm.

Im not on the waiting list but I sure would be sweating if I was.
I know the folks whom took delivery love their stuff but my goodness waiting over a year and a half or more for an amp is highly suspicious in my book.
If the builder knows of an insane wait time it should be fully disclosed.
And how can new models be introduced when loads of old orders havent even been built or filled yet.
Yikes.
I guess the get it hot price was too good too be true and the builder realized that awhile ago.
Good luck folks and Yes they are outstanding looking amps.
But the wait.........

100% Agree. I have been on the "the list" for 27 months after an initial estimate of 3 months. Never had 1 email from Mr Koski. I have asked Fatsound to cancel my order. Even if they were the best amps ever made I won't be buying an amp from him. I am going elsewhere plenty of nice options out there. I've been working with the public for 45 years and I got a very negative read on Mr Koski from that interview.
Good luck to all.

I shoulda bought that used X10 I saw for $900 and flipped it here...
Sounds like he might be spending more time doing RnD than building pre-existing orders, he rattled off like 5 new amps being designed or done being designed. The "I dunno either" (with a chuckle after that) by the owner of Xits seems like a slap in the face of anyone who is waiting, especially if there are any cash deposits or prepayment.
I've seen boutique instrument manufacturers "work" this way, and it never works. Sometimes even ends up criminal by accident due to mismanagement, good intentions mean little when you breach contract.

Reinforces my decision of bailing out on an X10 last year. Total lack of professionalism by a builder/business man in my opinion. Good luck to all still waiting...and wondering what they're going to get...and when.

I don't believe FatSoundGuitars has received more than 2-3 amps since September 2011. Way back in September 2011 I got an email reply from Stu saying I was next on the list. Imagine how excited I was... Well I haven't received my amp yet and its July 2012. I spoke with Mike Ayers from FSG last week and told him (as I incorrectly recalled the Stu email) that I was in the top 3 or 4 because I was told I would get my amp in next shipment, either later that month (9/11) or next (10/11). So I asked him if that was the case, had they really not received 3 or 4 X10's in the last 10 months? And he said yes. Pretty sad state of affairs.
At $1299, this amp is supposedly a losing $$ proposition for Koski - so does he just let everyone sit on the wait list until they fall off. Is that the plan? Or has FSG passed some X10's to favored customers and not stuck to the list order? I don't know. But from my standpoint this is all very disappointing.

I removed my comment. Why bother? It seems like there's no one left on the waiting list besides me anyway.
Who else besides me is on the waiting list?
I pulled out at the 2 year anniversary in January. I had paid a $1000 deposit and decided that I did not want to wait any longer. Stu was really nice about the refund and apologetic. I do not think that he has much control over the situation.
