i have always loved this solo! i used to have it on an old vhs tape and i wore that sucker out. this was recorded at a point in time where pat was really developing his own vocabulary and everything was very fresh and new. he was really going for it here! check out lyle laughing after pat finishes his solo. classic!

He did this tune as encore the 2nd time I saw him. I immediately went home and stole some ideas. Kind of ticks me off that we're almost the same age and I still can't do what he was doing at 22.
Regardless, this is some kick-ass playing.

yikes! amazing!
i remember seeing him at a LOVE 94 (pretty sure it was free) concert on the beach, in miami...i dont know, '77, '78,'79,'80?
i just remember it was a beautiful day, thousands of people, women in bikinis everywhere, and notes raining out over the beach in incredible flurries
what an amazing musician and band!

His harmonic conception was pretty mature then but what really blows me away are the amazing things he does with time.
Just stunning. And "that" sound.

I really enloyed that I like hearing him play "da bluze" haha
One of my personal favorites is that live in Europe CD where thousands of fans start singing the melody to his tunes... very cool, now thats star power and for a Jazz guy....priceless.

NO one does what Pat does with the inherent BEAUTY of tone and touch and dynamics and melodicism that he naturally has.
The older I've become and the more I've really listened to him, I have come to realize how great he is.

The PMG is on tour at the moment, paying old tunes like Phase Dance and so on, heard some boots, they are just in top form. Pat Metheny will definitely remain a huge influence for me.

That is the baddest Metheny I have ever heard. He has his own style and I really like his time.
But....I thought Metheny wasn't jazz, WTF ever.
Is there an album where he plays like this? Bright Size Life doesn't sound like this to me.

Check out his Trio recordings after BSL for his more straight ahead playing
such as Rejoicing, Question and Answer,Trio 99-00,Trio Live, and Day Trip. Also check out his sideman work with Michael Brecker and Joshua Redman.

Get Pat's 80/81 album. That's right about the time this was recorded before he changed from his early signature sound to the darker sound he uses now.

All good albums, but I still greatly prefer his playing in the clip I linked. For me, there is no album like the clip. I do really like Tales from the Hudson and the first Michael Brecker as well.

Great album! Still prefer the live vibe here!

This is a great clip. Pat is one of the greatest, no doubt. Mike Stern was definitely influenced by this period of Pat.

You know Mike, I was watching that Breau clip posted in the Lenny thread and Mike clearly pinched that bit where he plays the top note of the chord and then the chord underneath in a rhythmic pattern. Stern does it all the time!! Lenny does it in the video!!!
Never knew the connection!!

That's like the old organ matchbook trick. I've heard a number of players do that--it's called an inverted pedal point--but Mike exploits it the most.

pat really was on top of the game in those years...not that he isnt know..
but then he was exploding with ideas
i liked his tone better then.. lighter and airy ..not thick and middy
that 175 have a brighter tone and sounded more single coil than any 175 i ever heard or played...i played that guitar serveral times and always was surprised with its brightness..
he should have it restored
