I was quite surprised when I announced to friends and family I had found a lead guitar for a band project I,m working on. Close circle of family and friends know me for playing Lead...and asked what happened?
I had to find another guitar player to take over guitar playing duties while I concentrate on the recording side of it. Hes really working out well, and I,m finding I,m more productive and the rest of guys have noticed that too.
I still play rhythm Guitar and do a few leads but its nice to sit back and relax...and just concentrate on the production side of things.
So have you traded instruments or duties.....more relaxing,,,,lack of resources....just to get a band up and playing???
I stoped playing leads years ago.

I hired a guitar player to split the duties, had him for a few years, now we're going on tour and we're a trio and I'm playing through 2 amps and doing solos and rhythm stuff. I'm loving it all over again.

I was always a so-so lead guitarist in previous bands. Recently put a band together where I manage the business end and hired a gun player for the leads.
Its worked out perfectly. He is wicked and I get to concentrate on playing butt kickin' rhythm, locking in with the bass and drums, and started working on my vocals.
The band's getting plenty of work and we're are a better unit for it!
Cheers,

I used to do lead in a band I was with, and the current band started as a lead player. Now on bass due to the former player moving. Been on it for a few years now. Loving it.

I actually went the opposite direction about 9 months ago....I was more of the rhythm guy, and our lead player suddenly quit on short notice with a gig less than two weeks away. No decent fill in guys were available, so I had to step up and learn how to make things work as a trio. It was shaky at first, but now I like having the freedom to play without having to work around another guitarist. I still consider myself a better rhythm guitarist than lead, but my playing is getting better overall as a result.

After lifelong lead player - I'm our new bass player !
Bass is soooo cool, but only if you don't play like a lead guitar player.
I'm in the pocket now !

I played basically no rhythm guitar in my first bands... now that I play a solo acoustic gig, I play basically no lead :)

I've always been playing leads. Now I'm learning how to play rhythm.

I quit playing leads... well, actually rhythm or anything--quit playing music altogether. Back when I was gigging for a living I started on keys & rhythm guitar, ended up being lead guitarist doubling on keys & bass.

Always loved playing bass! :) (played bass in jazz band in Jr. College, too)

What is this "lead guitar," you speak of?
When I was in two-guitar bands, we split the work pretty evenly. To my way of thinking, "lead" guitar is an anachronism.

They expect me to do everything. Write, arrange, play lead and rhythm (sometimes at the same time). I'm glad we're an instrumental band. ;)
But it's all good...it's what I want to do.
