View Full Version : how many basses do you have/want?

I ask this because I have had the same fender P for almost six years, the same amp for five, yet I am constantly GAS'ing for new guitars and guitar amps...I have four electrics, three amps, and with no end to this in sight.
Im pretty well set as far as bass gear goes though, one bass, one amp... Maybe Ill get 5 string sometime if the right one comes up, but I dont really need/want any new bass gear right now.
anyone else share this same phenomenon?

anyone else share this same phenomenon?
Not me; but good for you. It's always about the music, not the instrument, it's what you can do with your bass rather than the model or how many you have.
BUT- I have a lot of basses, and a lot of amps and they are all different in tone and character and feel.
I used my Sadowsky at my session this afternoon, Tuesday I'll go with the Bongo I think.
Then maybe my Warwick Thumb thru my...
See? Ain't nothing too wrong about that either is there?
I earned the money; I love the TONE I get.
Play one; or play several; just....PLAY!

I was up to 21 basses at one point around five years ago, but since then I have managed to get that down to 7 that I play regularly.
During that time I've actually increased my number of amps/cabs, because I'm now gigging and recording in a variety of situations/genres.

Too many, I reckon, but they all do different things. I had nothing but a '61 Pbass for years (I play mostly upright anyway), but along they way accumulated a fretless P/J, a tele bass, and jazz. I also have a Dano short-scale for when I cannot fly with an upright (properly manipulated it does any amazing imitation!).

Current basses (all 4 strings):
Rick Turner Electroline fretless (unique sound, fun to play)
Tobias Signature (Burbank production) (will probably sell)
1965 Jazz Bass (sunburst) (will never sell)
1969 Precision Bass (w/ Jazz Bass bridge pickup; Nordstrand pickups) (classic P/J bass, will probably never sell)
1972 Telecaster Bass (will probably sell)
1985 Jazz Bass modified (2Tek Bridge, Barotlini pickups and preamp -- too heavy but sounds huge)
Alembic Europa (will probably sell)
Steinberger L2 (will probably sell)
Musicman Cutlass II (graphite neck, 2 pickups) (will probably sell)
Joe Glazer Baritone Danelectro (will never sell)
recently sold: SWR/Tobias Journeyman Bass prototype
The 1965 Jazz bass is the one I grab most often. I indicated which ones I think I will eventually sell, as I can see getting by without them. But they are all nice basses in their own right.
I would like to try out a Ric and a nice hollowbody bass, such as a Guild Starfire, to see if they give me something new I like.
I was up to 3 basses at one point (1 J, 1 Washburn, 1 Rik) until I permanently switched to guitar. Then I paired it down to 1 bass, the Rik, but now I'm up to 12 guitars :bonk

I've been rolling on a Precision and a Jazz for a few years now. I truly feel I could play those two for the rest off my life and get any kind of tone I'll ever want. Although, when I hit the lotto, I'll be picking up a Ric :)

For about 12-14 years I rotated between an American Standard Jazz, E.B. Musicman and an Ibanez ATK300 that I used for practices.
I sold the Musicman a couple of years ago when temporarily quit playing.
I started playing again and decided to try an American Standard P-Bass after watching 'Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" a dozen times :-) I loved it and sold my Jazz Bass to buy a second P-Bass. They are my babies now and for the rest of my short time left on this earth :-)
Currently have 4 and have one more incoming.
Use them all. Still got an itch for one or two more, but won't be scratching that itch for a while (due to lack of scratch)

I have 4 that I use.
In the house our daughter has one she never uses, junior just went to college, but he always used one of my basses instead of the bass he has and my wife has a bass. So I guess that's seven in the house.

I have four basses:
Cort Curbow 6
Peavey Grind 6
Douglas Fretless 6
No-Name (probably Antonio Tsai) 7
I don't actually want any other bass guitar; given money or whatever, I'd probably like to de-fret my Grind and put flats on it, then maybe upgrade the electronics on one or more of them.
Curbow is the lightest one I have and has the best electronics, but is also probably the only one I could get anything for, so would probably be the first to go.

i still gas for more, normally to give me options for live work and recording.
it's always the inherent sound / playability that does it for me, although the shape does sometimes have an effect.
i tend to approach it like any tradesman, a chippie (Carpenter) will own more than one saw - different tools for different applications

I've got two uprights and eight electrics. They're all a little different. But yeah, not enough to say I need two and eight. I could get by with one and one. Still, having them is neat.
I also have a Dano short-scale for when I cannot fly with an upright (properly manipulated it does any amazing imitation!).

I pretty much got through the 90s with a 78 P-Bass, but I was broke then. I got a Mexican Jazz bass about 10 years ago and have slowly tricked it out over the years, when my P-Bass needed work. A few years later, I got one of the first year Geddy Lee Jazz basses (they were much cheaper then).
That had been that up until this year and I ran into a couple of nice ones at good prices and went nuts and got a 51 Reissue P-Bass, 4003 Rick and a Gibson SG bass. I've been mostly playing the Rick and the 51 P bass of late at practice.
I could get by with what I have. I'd like to have a fretless and have always wanted a Stingray or a T-bird.

I didn't mention what I'd want. I used to have a Gibson EB2; wouldn't mind having another one of those, or maybe a (cheaper copy of a) Hofner bass.
But what I really want, and would like to copy as my next build, is an Audiovox 736.

I have four Precisions, and one of them will be gone as soon as the guy who wants it brings me some money.
In order of purchase: '51 RI, Classic '50s (the one I'm selling), natural ash FRS Standard with a Warmoth fretless unlined maple fingerboard neck, and my gigging bass, an American Vintage '57. I basically got rid of everything that wasn't a Precision, and then zeroed in on the perfect one for me.
The first three all have Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups and all four wear Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats.
I use a Bassman 400 for my practice amp, and a Mesa/Boogie Walkabout Scout 1x15 for gigs. Unless something happens to one of the basses or amps, I'm set for life.

I've owned 29 basses but I'm down to four:
1. Sukop fretless 4
Sukops didn't have model names when I got mine ten years ago - he only had one. This is my workhorse and has been played at hundreds of gigs.
2. NS Design NXT EUB
Bought it this summer. Gets used at one or two gigs a month.
3. Gretsch 6175 acoustic/electric
All but retired since I got the NXT.
4. Wishbass
Shaped like my band's logo. Not really playable but good for photo shoots.
My next purchase will be a U-Bass (electric bass ukulele). I do wish I had kept some things I sold, like my Alembic Series II, Alembic Stanley Clarke, '93 Ric 4004C, Lakland 44-01, '69 Gibson EB-1, Zon VB-4 and Warwick Buzzard.
Two Hamer USA Jazz basses, fretted and fretless 4s.
I've had Pedulla Thunderbasses, both 6s, fretted and fretless. Should have never sold those. Three Hexbuzzes. Rob Allen Deep 5. F-Bass AC-6. Original Steinberger. To name a few.
I wouldn't mind trading my Hellcat VI up for a Fender Bass VI or a Gretsch Spectrasonic baritone, but there you go - I have one, wouldn't mind staying at one.

I own three 4-string Fender basses. I've had one for 20 years, one for about 17, and one for maybe 12 years.
My days of playing in bands are most likely over but even if they weren't, I don't think I'll ever buy another bass.

I have one Dano bass right now, and I would like to add more. I play bass in church, and the Dano does just fine. I had a Stingray that I miss terribly, and I would love a Rick at some point. A PBass would be cool, too.

Here is is. If you look closely by the pickup you'll see the E string hangs at or over the edge of the neck for half its length, making it mostly unplayable. It's a conversation piece and not much else.

4 and 5 string Sting Rays - one of each and they are my main basses - it's a rock band but lots of dynamics. Also - G&L SB-1 w/ G&L J p/u in the bridge slot. Other main bass is a Stagg Jaguar copy with Audere preamp. I also play a Kala uke bass for at least a tune or two most shows.
The only reason I'd buy another bass would be to go up to a level of workmanship found on Sadowsky, Lull, etc...

I wish that I could even remember the basses I used to own. I have regrets on two that I let go of in years past, a G&L L1000 that was really light and very flexible with tones, and one of the few Martin electric basses that were made. I currently own (and play) a Fodera Emperor, which is in my avatar, a Melancon PJ bass, a Lakland Skyline Duck Dunn model and the newest bass, which is a Shen 180 double bass. I only own one amp - an EA 500, and two Epifani cabinets - 2x10 and a 4x10. I quit looking for basses after buying the Fodera used, and I'm happy with the light weight and power of my rig.
Thanks Brian. I always wondered what bass that was in your avatar. I once played a G&L ASAT (looked like a Tele kinda thing) and I really wished I had the $$ to buy it. Was one of the finest basses I ever played! Great feel, great sound, just perfect all around. I'm more than happy with my Rick, but I still dream about that one.

I go back and forth on playing guitar and bass. On guitar I have been through crazy amounts of gear. 50+ high end amps and probably a dozen guitars. But with bass playing, its kinda the opposite. I've owned 5 different basses and 3 different bass amps over the last 17 years, while never owning more than a couple at a time. (although in the early 90's I did a bit of bass swapping too, but that was a long time ago) But when I play guitar, I tend to noodle with gear. Swapping parts and stuff as much as I play. When I play bass, I get a rig and just play it. Which makes me think I'm really a bass player when it gets down to it.
Right now I just have two rigs. One sentimental and one functional. My sentimental rig consists of a 1993 Warwick Streamer Stage I 5-string and a Trace Elliot AH350SMX that I used for an 8-year stint with a touring rock band back in my younger days. The bass I've owned nonstop, but the amp I gave away to some kids starting a band about 7 years ago. A few months ago I found the amp stacked in the back of an old music store on the DAY I was getting together with my old band for a 14 year reunion. I felt like it was divine intervention finding right then, so I bought it, used it that day with the old band, fixed it up and used it a more little with them but ultimately put it away in the closet.
So at this point I essentially have two rigs:
1. My old sentimental rig that never gets played and just sits in a closet:
1993 Warwick Streamer Stage I and a Trace Elliot AH350SMX
2. My active rig which consists of:
2010 Carvin SB5000 and a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 + SWR Marcus Miller Golight 4x10
Sometimes I think about getting a 4-string bass, but that usually passes :) Here is a pic of most of it: Bass Stuff (http://www.plaidfaction.com/images/Gear/sb&warwick.JPG)

Well, I have too many, but not enough. How does that work? ;)
My fav gig bass is a 92-62 re Jazz, MIJ, and I upgraded the pups to noiseless jazz on that bass. For prog rock work, I recently acquired an Epi Tbird 5 string. It is a tone machine. I absolutely love it.
Also have a USA Peavey Foundation, a hand made Fender Jazz copy, sunburst, which has decent tone as well. Another Peavey bass, of the Asian persuasion, and a pretty cool Samick 5 stringer.
My gig rig is an Ashdown Mag with a 4/10 cab. I also gig with a Rumble 60 in smaller clubs, and I've got a Peavey for practice.
What I want is a modified Fender Jazz, butterscotch, active electronics, but a 4 string, recently traded in at the music shop. I look, I mean stare at it every time I go in. It is $899.00, but I also want an upright bass. I've also got my eye out for an older Ampeg head, but may settle for a Hartke 3500.
However, I have a lot of guitars as well, so, I may need an addition on the house first.
My Wife is the financial advisor though, so I have my work cut out for me. :D

1. Gibson SG Bass. I've had it modified with a Kahler 7410 vibrato and simple volume/tone/pickup selector switch controls, and I've had some improvements done on the tone knob so it actually rolls off the tone. I've sold all my other basses. I don't want to play anything else because it wouldn't sound like "me".

Yup, to be honest the bass sounds terrible, but that's why I love it. I string it up with flats now too so it's absolutely THE worst bass imagineable for the buzzed up bass players at the bar who think they're cool and want to sit in to noodle some Primus licks.
Needless to say as far as 60's hard rock goes I love my rig though.

I used to own a Rickenbacker 4003, but I sold it. Recently, I am developing quite the hankering for a Suhr Classic J, but I am sitting on the desire in the hope that it goes away. Instead, I am hoping to put that energy into playing guitar. It is my theory that it is better to get slightly better on the one instrument rather than to be so thoroughly mediocre on two.
With arthritis kicking my @$$ the last few years I've been letting some stuff go. I'm still playing but much less so these days.
I'm down to one bass - a MusicMan Bongo 4HH. It's a fantastic instrument!

'86 Gibson Q-80 BassStumbled on it at a garage sale. Bought it to flip it, but I've come to like it quite a bit. It would be the first to go.

'07 Rice Custom #065 Fretless JBuilt with a vintage Fender body that my wife (girlfriend at the time) restored. Wonderful feel and tone.

'06 Shen SB-200 Double BassI saved my gig money for years after college and picked this bass as an upgrade from the Engelhardt.
I had decided to sell it (and had a buyer), but couldn't part with it.
Much more modern sounding than my old German bass, and a joy to play.

'70 Univox Naked BassThis is the bass I learned on. It was my dad's friend's bass in the 70's, my dad ended up
with it and gave it to me a few years ago. Great P copy, when bought new it was chosen
over a few similarly-priced used Fenders (those 60's Fenders would be worth a pile now,
but the Univox is still a better bass!).

I'm in the process of designing/building a MIDI-capable bass, I have a feeling it will bump the other fretted basses back into the closet.
Ampwise, I currently have a '66 Ampeg B-15-N, EA Doubler with two Wizzy 10 cabs, and a GK 1001RB-II with two Bag End S15-D cabs.

I forgot to mention this one, which gets most of my practice attention of late--does it count?

Jeff, you dog! I took my daughter to some second-rate circus many years ago, and they had a killer live band. The bassman played fender bass, arco parts on upright, and tuba, and I epiphanized: "The complete bassist!!", and forsaw my destiny! I finally found a beat tuba at a yard sale (looked like it suffered 50 yrs of torture at the hands of school band kids) for fifty bucks. Got to where I could nearly play a half-steady I-V-I-V in a coupla keys, but never put in the time required to be Howard Johnson. Just moved into a tiny water-front cottage, and it hadta go (along with a coupla uprights). Next time I move to a sprawling mansion I will persue reacquiring one. Next time I think I will go Sousaphone so's I can grab up those lucrative marching gigs!

is one of mine- the quote struck my interest-
True "MIDI" is debatable, but this BEE WorkerBee I had made employs the Graph-Tech "Ghost" piezo bridge system and a 13-pin hexaphonic jack that allows access to in my case the Roland GR-20 Guitar/bass synth that is an extremely creative & fun tool.
Pretty certain that it allows access to a device (Roland and others) that can trigger "true" midi if needed; I do fine with the synth patches-
BEST is a leveled mix between a synth patch and mag pickup from bass-
WAY kewl.

Nice. I'm using the Graphtech saddles/preamp probably with a G&L MFD magnetic pickup, driving an AXON AX50.

Sounds great. The Graphtech is certainly an incredible system; very toneful.
I'll check out the AXON, thanks-
...And I have a total of (6) MFD's on (3) G&L's they are scary-strong!!!;)

Fender Jazz, Fender Precision, Fender fretless Jazz, Tacoma Thunderchief acoustic bass guitar, Strunal 50/4 blond acoustic upright. All four strings. I'm good.

I have 4 basses: Ibanez SR1205 neck-thru five-string (natural w/ aguilar onboard pre-amp), Ibanez SR1205 neck-thru five-string (transparent black), Fender Precision (black w/ white pickguard), Ibanez acoustic/electric four-string.
Want: something I'm currently debating actually to get in the next month OR early next year. I want either
- to build some sort of "mutant" bass that I'm going to buy the parts I want and put together myself, maybe custom paint it too. I want it fretless, though not sure if I want a 5 string or 4 string, I'm also thinking about doing some sort of weird tuning that may lend itself to cool chords on the fretless, maybe BEADD(octave up) or BEAEB or BF#BF# or BEAA(octave up) something like that. OR just keeping it standard.
- Fender Jazz bass w/ Precision neck
- I'd really like to have a custom neck-thru 5-string bass with a fat humbucker in the center/sweetspot and with a jazz pickup in between that and the bridge. Warrior is the only company I've seen that makes that, but those are stupid expensive. Maybe I can still get something like that custom-made, but it'd still be expensive, and would be further down the road than the first two options i listed.
My last band broke up a couple months ago, so I've been trying to find a new project since, but so far no luck. I'm also looking to pursue a couple different styles/genres to broaden my options of playing actively, so part of what style I am able to accomplish first or consistantly will have some sort of factor of what bass gear I buy/build next.
Though I play bass regularly and prefer to play bass over guitar in a live context my rig is simple / minimal. I have one amp, one pedal, and one bass (not including tuner):
Amp: MarkBass Jeff Berlin 1x15 combo
Pedal: Tech 21 VT Bass Deluxe
Bass: EBMM Bongo 4HH
I used to own two Bongo's with the same configuration of two humbuckers, one wore roundwounds, the other flats. I found after a while I was no longer playing the flats at all so I sold one of the Bongos. At some point in the future I'll likely add another Bongo bass, this time a 4H to add a little versatility.
I've had my 86' fender pbass for about 20 years now. It has a very full sound that I enjoy. I've only gigged at one time with it and my brother uses it here and there for our band.
I play his other bass and several others and do like it, but it's just my favorite one to play. The string spacing at the nut is wider than most - I like this.

I have a Rickenbacker that and still have my very first bass, a P bass.
That's all I want. I might get another couple Rics in different colors just for variety, but that's would be the only reason why. I don't need anything else.

I like the string spacing wider at the nut too. P-basses are so awesome. My fender p-bass was my first bass, i don't play it much in recent years but ive had it for almost 15years and ill always have it.

I only have one bass a Mexi P bass, which I'm very happy with, I think 2 or 3 basses would cover pretty much everything I'd need. Any more would just be for the GAS :hide2

I have 2:
USAGC P-bass I "built" myself and a EBMM fretless stingray (single H, 2-band)
I think it'd be cool, to have two more.... a fretted stingray and a fretless P-bass. I'm pretty content though...
