View Full Version : What would you sell before selling your number 1 guitar?

A couple of threads here about the Emporium sparked my interest to know what else would you sell before selling your number one "best guitar Ive ever played".
I have a few guitars that I would sell if times go tough but Id really be hard pressed to sell my #1 which is a Nash 57s with Lollars. I just love everything about that guitar and Id definitely sell some other non music related possession to make ends meet. I feel like I would be next to homeless before selling that guitar. The sale would only provide a short term solution to something that needs alot more than a thousand bucks or so to fix. Once I got back on my feet I would always kick myself for selling it. I know this from past experiences..(83 strat)

My #1 is a flat black Setzer Hot Rod w/TV's. It would take A LOT to make me sell it. I make $$$ with that guitar so I don't even know if I could justify selling it anyway.

During a time of financial duress, I sold all of my gear. Including two irreplacable black-face Fenders, and my number one, a C.S. Strat. When it comes right down to it. They're just material things--wood and steel. The world will not end if you have to put them on the Emporium. You can always get another amp, a cool new guitar. That being said, it sucks to part with your unique instruments. Barring medical bills for me or my family, I don't think I'd like to do it again. (Hence the shitty, soul-killing job I endure every day for rent and bennies...) Is it possible to cut back in other places and pick up a part time job somehwere to make up the difference? I have a friend that busks when he needs extra loot. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon... Good weather, a few hours of public practice and he comes home with about a hundred bucks in change.

My first guitar, a Fender Mustang, and my second guitar, a '73 335, have a ton of sentimental value. However, I rarely play them anymore. My main guitar is a Nocaster. While I love it, I don't think I would have too much trouble picking up another great Nocaster. Consequently, I'd sell #1 before #8 and #9,

I'm really hoping nobody says 'arse'.
That would be just out of order and totally beneath TGP morality and a sham of a mockery of 2 shams of a travesty.

I don't even know what my #1 is. My electrics are all so different: G&L ASAT, G&L Legacy, Hamer Artist, hamer Studio, Carvin DC135, Lag Roxanne w/Fralin P-90's. They all play a role and do different things

Any of them have alot of sentimental value?
I think if my wife or parents bought me a guitar, I would never sell it. That would be really special to me because it shows their acceptance to my "hobby". I very rarely get a gift that I "always wanted". If a guitar was gifted to me by a loved one I would cherish it, even if it wasnt much of a player.

I have sold my number one more than once, including a great guitar which I can't replace. They're just possessions.

2 through 12 (and all of my amps) would be on the chopping block before I sold my number 1.

I'd sell one of my watches if I was desperate over my # 1 violin or # 1 guitar.

That's me too. Now I have never owned a real 50's or 60's Strat so that might change if I did. But when times are tough and you need real money then you sell what gets you that.

my #1 is my 06 R-8 les paul..it has the RS vintage kit and a set of custom wound pickups done by a friend of mine..i have never heard another guitar with the tone my les paul has, it is truly awesome..
i don't even want to have to think about parting with it, hopefully that day will never come.

I sold my 64 Strat. I sold my 68 Tele.
I hope I never have to sell my 58 Les Paul Custom.
Wish I had my 68 Tele back.

I sold my #1 to fund an AxeFx, no biggie.
It was a 93 American Standard Strat with Dimarizo Area 61/58s.
Yes, I miss it, but it can be replaced. The only thing is, it was the #1 guitar of my sobriety.

Barring medical bills for me or my family, I don't think I'd like to do it again. Understood.
I'm not saying I'd never sell my #1, I'm just saying that it would be the last thing I'd sell.
I sold my #1 to fund an AxeFx, no biggie. Yes, I miss it, but it can be replaced.I don't think my #1 can be replaced. I could get another guitar, but I have bonded with it in a way that I don't expect to happen again in this lifetime. Yes it's a possession, but it's not just a possession, it's my prized possession and I'm very attached to it.
As much as I like my Axe FX I can't imagine selling my #1 or even my #2 to get one. An Axe FX can be replaced, or bought later. My two favorite guitars work for me like no others have in 45 years. I don't expect to stumble onto one I like as much that easily.

My #1 is a '68 or '69 Tele that I got for a very good price. At the time I figured I'd keep it around until we needed money - then sell it and buy a '52 RI or even a Classic Vibe. But after playing it a few years I can't imagine having to sell it - it's like a perfectly worn-in baseball glove or pair of jeans. Money will get very tight when we have a 2nd child and I'm getting nervous - I need a better job!

I own 4 "guitars":
usa custom parts P-bass
fretless EBMM stingray
gibson es330L
collings acoustic
I'd sell any of them before the collings, and not feel bad about it (if i really needed the money). Still though, I'd sell the collings if I had too. Still sucks though...

My number one amp, and all other guitars. Amps are amps and for me seem much less personal than a guitar that just fits your hand. My number 1 keeps changing over the years. My current number 1 is an LP Custom. As I get a nicer playing axe, what number one is, keeps changing. I have a few that are awesome and I wouldn't want to sell them though.

I came to the conclusion a couple years ago that I sound about the same on any guitar I play... therefore, I'd sell any guitar if I had to... YMMV

I'd like to think I'd sell a kidney before either of my Crestons, but who knows what I'd do if I got really desperate... luckily, I haven't had to cross that bridge.
That said, I think the Emporium tends to draw in a whole lot of make believe stories & drama. I understand the economy sucks & that true sob stories exist, but we have a slew of people here that just overbuy because they get GAS as often as the wind blows. Then, in attempt to unload their dog guitar (amp, pedal, etc.) or maybe just a piece of gear they don't like &/or have buyer's (or wife's) remorse over, they're trying to unload it without disclosing why in hope of not scaring off potential buyers.
Sales people lie, some really good, others really poorly... it's the nature of the beast. It's sort of sad to see so many people acting so hard up, but with a market overloaded with gear it's understandable. It goes both ways too because there are a ridiculous number of buyers out there that expect giveaways.

I think the Emporium tends to draw in a whole lot of make believe stories & drama...I stay out of the Emporium. The last thing I need to do is start impulse buying based on some really nice gear even if it's at a really nice price.
There are just a couple of things I want at this point and I'm trying to limit my spending to just getting them.
