Freeform, Gorgeous pedal board! What do you do when you get a new pedal or if you have to move stuff around though? I have a Trailer Trash too and I was considering upgrading to the "hard top".

Thanks!

Hey Chris, My 2nd loop on the left of the two loop box' is wired to a send and return on the side of the board. This is an Aux. loop and if I got a new pedal or even another board I could control it from that loop just like the rest of my pedals. Ture bypass too! Rooster puts good foresight into his boards aswell as fantastic workmanship.

I'm always impressed with your boards when I see them. So this isn't the one you use with LiluDallas, right? Do you use a board with that band? I thought there was clearance underneath the Pedaltrain Pros for a PP2, if you moved it under you'd have room for one more pedal. :dude
What's the box under the Retrosonic Chorus?

This is not the lilu dallas board although some of this stuff will be on the record we are recording.

I have tried various underside mounting techniques with the PPII and I like having it up top in the end. There is nothing to fall off and it keeps me from buying another pedal to put there. The box under the chorus is an older ADL Juicebox which supplies more power and 9V ac for the TZF.

A very short and small Monster "Outlets to Go" power strip ziptied and velcro-ed underneath the Goatkeeper. I reterminated the cable to accept an IEC power cable so there are no wires hanging off when I pack up.

It's just a cheap, battery powered alarm clock that I rigged up with velcro to stay on my board, but it is a really convenient way to know what time it is without having to wear a watch or dig for a phone, etc. We play a lot of 3-4 hour gigs and it's nice to know when a set break is coming as we often lose track of time by pulling things out of order from our songlist.

I always love how us TGP'ers with a, quite frankly, more than decent 'pair' of pedals, use phrases like "for now", "this month" or -my favourite arguably- 'this morning'... and they don't really talk about 'that this is the time the picture was made'..
pedalboards can change overday sometimes... !

p.s. Great collection !

Holy shit.

Why?

I think I started loving pedals when I saw Ian Moore play back in his hay day, but never had much excuse or means to go down that road. A while back I started playing in a cover band and we were getting some great gigs, playing a wide variety of songs, and I was about to graduate with my masters so I started picking them up and it obviously snowballed. I've sold some off here and there and kept the ones I really like. Most of the ones I have I can sell for what I paid or more in many cases.

I hope you are just joking! The gear is way secondary to the ability to play music. Anybody can amass a collection given time, resources, and a fair dose of insanity. To use it in a meaningful context is what matters, and we're all on that journey in one form or another.

markom89
09-09-2007, 08:39 PM
yes, I was joking... :) good to see someone actually "gives a damn" in todays world though... Great boards! I guess it started out with the BJF stuff with you as it did with me... first you think "I'll give them a try" and before you know it you've got the whole line, lol... ('cept I'm not even half...) Great stuff!

The Sahasrara into the FD2 is quite the combination for me. Very usable tones stacked/alone. The other OM Labs on the top left is a custom power supply. Not a pedal. Heh.

Yup, the Tremor is a tremolo pedal by Goose. He doesn't have a website but you can purchase/enquire his pedals through his dealer's site at http://www.mrmisse.com/gasgoo.htm. Namle has described it pretty well, and honestly for the price, you can't find anything better. I actually dumped my Empress Trem for this.

You probably haven't seen them around TGP much with the residents being of US/Aussie/European majority. Locally made in Singapore, and seriously good stuff. It's up there with some of the well-known boutiques IMO.

I'm always swapping out dirt pedals, but yeah, I've gone with more boosters now than dirt. Got rid of a v3 OCD, v1 Crunch Box, Rocktron Metal Planet and a few others.
Looking for a Small Fry or Emma Reeza to try in place of the Fang.

The coils around the cables are automotive split wire loom.
Just trying to keep it neat.

yes, it is the mini elc.

I haven't been able to hook everything up right yet. Having some problems...and very frustrating if you ask me. Having to lose my analog delay and analog chorus because they aren't powering by any source other than battery...and they are 18v a piece. Wiring underneath looks like trash. It has just been a frustrating, and all together not rewarding board revamping experience thus far.

Sometimes I feel this way and thats ultimately what leads you to try new things that will work for your rig and youll probably find something that sounds great as well. Did you consider getting 18V wallwarts for those two pedals? Have you considered any analog choruses that will run 9V because there are some amazing ones out there like the HBE, Red Witch, RetroSonic... etc. If your wiring looks like crap you might want to start making your own DC cables. That cleaned my board up tremendously and made my whole board building experience more rewarding since I did more of it myself.

Well, i dont have room for wall warts for 18v. I'm going to try one more thing and if that doesnt work...i want to try some 9v ones...but i need them ibanez/maxon sized. I thought...just trade for like a cs-9 and an ad-9 or something. So, i might look for those. I actually do want dc cables that are wired precisely, but I am just so ready for the boards to be together at this point...it's so frustrating and time consuming.

AD9s are pretty nice although I would get a DM2 if you want that type of analog delay. The new retrosonic delay is also supposed to be fantastic.

Chorus like the CS505? You could probably try a CS9 or a BC9 for tons of swirl. The Retrosonic Chorus is maybe your best bet for a sound like the CS505 though. Good luck either way.

BT, I own both the RS chorus and the analog delay. The RS Chorus Ensemble is the best CE-1 imitator out there, and I have a real one to back that up. VERY small footprint (smaller than it looks) and very solid. Nice drippy, thick chorus.

The Analog Delay smokes both my DM-2 and AD-9 (original). It's clear, warm, and thick, the right amount of delay time (550ms), with the fast/slow switch its' very versitile. They aren't cheap, but the build quailty is good, the sound excellent, and the CS amazing.

I have to ask. Does that OM Labs power supply power the V-Twinl? My main reason for not using my V-Twin is that the power supply I have for it is an Oz one, and that means I have to use a very dodgy adapter that cuts out if someone walks into the room and farts :D

LowWatt

Heres mine

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x319/lowwatt/DSC00543.jpg

I go straight into the looper (i'm looking for something to put before it with a good buffer) and I usually set my Maz Jr. on the edge of clean with the SHO as the only thing out of the loop to give me some boost.

Loop A is for when I need gain - Buddha Wah --> BYOC Octafuzz (still waiting to be finished by me) --> Durham Crazy Horse (on the trading block right now) --> Crowther Hot Cake.

Loop B is for the rare times I need some swirl, tuning, but it mainly just gets used for rockabilly - Limited Edition BYOC Phaser (axeandyoushallreceive.com kit, assembled by me) --> BYOC Tremolo (still waiting to be finished by me) --> Danelectro BLT slap back delay --> Boss Tuner.

It's all powered by a Godlyke powerall and 2 daisy chains. The piece of foam above goes above the pedals to protect them and keep them from moving in transit, but it's also there to go under my amp in case it starts sounding off when it starts vibrating against the stage.

The Dr. Scientist Tremolessence (http://www.drscientist.ca/pedaldetail.php?pedal_code=trem) ended my trem search. Then again, I'm not one who wants tap and divisions and all that stuff that other people want. It's a great sounding trem (warm, clear and doesn't distort) that can get you plenty of different sounds other than the standard chop or smooth ripple via the shape knob... you can get blips and delay like sounds as well. They're just not 'presets' like on some other devices.

And the volume output control is an internal trimpot - set it and forget it!

Thanks man, appreciate it! And yea- the whole acid etching thing that Moollon does looks very cool! The LED they have on there is interesting too... it's actually flat and flush with the top of the case.

how do you like the Fetto Vs Emma Vs Menatone ?
their all different styles and sounds i understand... but do u use some with certain guitars or styles, etc?
One reason why those 3 are on the board is that they all play equally well with my guitars (LP, Tele, Strat, PRS, Ibz), with the Menatone slightly favoring humbuckers.

Style-wise, the Workingman's Blue is my go-to for more vintage OD; it's blusier for lack of a better term, has a full low end, and has that cranked Bassman / JTM45 thing going on. Does well for Gilmour overdrive and of course a whole host of tones similar from Hendrix to the Dead. AC/DC is in there too... kind of like a Box of Rock, only better, IMO. And the Silver Kiss stacks phenomenally well into it - giving it more of that early Rush thing. Those 2 just work in tandem very well to cover that kind of thing.

Fetto vs. Emma. Both of them don't care what you plug into them, but the Fetto lets you hear more of your instrument, where the Emma eats up the characteristics a bit more. To me, the Fetto is more 70's and 80's rock - Van Halen's "Mean Street" = a good idea of the Fetto sound to me. The Darkness' 1st album. Stuff like that - open, dynamic, and rockin'! Most dynamic pedal I own and you can control so much from pick attack.

The Emma colors your sound a bit more, has that built in 'whomp', is a bit bit mid scooped, and is great for more modern rock tones. Or really anywhere you hear a real 'distortion' at work that has some mids taken out (not a big scoop, but def. there). Think... Lacuna Coil. Evanescence. Stack it with the SK and it gets a bit more open and biting, stack it with the WMB and it gets bigger and deeper (!).

Seriously, I'd try giving them a phone call - they have a toll free number: 877-647-2651. They're in California, so take that into consideration re: business hours. I know the experience you've had is probably off-putting, but the cables are great and worth it.

Also (it's all coming back to me now) - there was a delay in processing my last order because they were waiting for newly made cable to come in... they had run out! So perhaps they're in the same situation? Anyway, try giving 'em a buzz. Becky is great on the phone and will answer all your Q's.

Nice collection guys, lately I have tried the Keely moded Boss Blues Driver, and a Keely TS-?, it was smoother, but wasn't cutting enough for my old ears, and the Boss still sounded like a Boss :messedup

The latest incarnation / plateau.
I never thought I'd have 5 drive pedals on a board, but damnit I love it and they all sound quite different from one another and provide for interesting stacks. Two Pedal Power 2+'s provide power for the board.

Awesome board.

What replaced the Tube Zone? the Fetto or the Emma? Opinions?

I love my TZ, but still always checking the options.

-Ben

Just saw this... I take it the Emma replaced your TZ? and added the Fetto to pick up the area where the TZ's cut is down and mids are up... and didn't get into the whole sludgy mesa area of the TZ... ya?

Thank you sir!

The Tube Zone originally replaced my Reeza! Then the Fetto replaced the Tube Zone. Then a friend of mine was getting rid of his Reeza, so I snagged it to try reboxing on it... and I ended up both liking the project and having the room for it... not to mention I used the Reeza for years before I had the Tube Zone and I really dig the sound.

For the most part, I always dialed in the Tube Zone to sound very similar to my favorite setting on the Reeza, and the reason I kept the TZ was because it was simply more versatile. The Fetto really took everything to the next level though... I'd have to agree I think on your assessment re: cut down, mids up thing on the TZ and the Fetto taking the mantle - without, as you say, the "whole sludgy mesa" thing ;) . It's amazing what a tonal chameleon the Fetto is - any 70's - 80's rock and it nails it. And it sounds much more open than the TZ, it's much more dynamic, it never gets too bright, keeps low string definition, and it doesn't mask the inherent sound of your guitar of choice.

NOW - the Reeza is being used as a distortion - unlike how I was using the TZ (med. OD to heavy overdrive / dist.) - so I don't care if it masks the 'character' of the guitar and I want it to be compressed! One thing I like about the Reeza over the TZ in this application is that it has better low string attack, where the TZ has a somewhat rounded attack in comparison. The TZ is also a bit smoother, and the Reeza is a bit more aggressive.

So overall I'd have to say that the Fetto Dlx. finally gave me the rock sound I was hearing in my head that I wanted... something that the TZ and Reeza couldn't give me. However, sometimes you want a great, somewhat scooped, modern heavy rock distortion - and that's where the Reeza delivered.

Wouldn't know since I've never owned a regular Fetto, but I CAN say I find the 'Lowdrive' and 'Core' knobs extremely useful and would much rather have them than not!
The TZ isn't a bad pedal at ALL by ANY means. It's a great 'compromise' pedal I think, in that it does a lot of things well, and it's very versatile in regard to shaping the sound. I just think, for my purposes, the Fetto Dlx. and Reeza simply nail 2 sounds in my head, whereas the TZ wasn't 100% there. For me.

Here's my latest updated "board". I'm off to The Home Depot tomorrow to build the board part. The pedal chain is as follows:

Telecaster Custom with 1958 pickups>> Zvex Fuzz Probe>> Taylor May Pro IV Treble Booster>> Bad Monkey>> Zendrive >> OCD>> Mojo Vibe>> Echoplex EP-3>> 1975 Traynor YBA-2B Bass Mate (2xEL84)

I know the pedal placement seems a bit weird but this is what sounds best to me. I like the way the Mojo Vibe sounds at the end of the chain, though everyone tells me it should go closer to the guitar??

The OCD is run at 18 volts. It has to, the pedal sounds great at 9v but at 18v its the best higher gain OD/Distortion I have ever heard in a pedal. The Mojo of course is 9v and the echoplex is plugged in. The rest are battery operated for now.

I used to own tons of vintage pedals, but now I am going for quality and lack of tone sucking. I'm pretty happy with this set up for now.

The pros are a lot taller. Theyre the perfect size. Ive had a few IIs and they were all awkwardly sized compared to my pedals so nothing ever worked out right.

Total board investment $13.45 at The Home Depot. One piece of white shelving. Some zip ties, some zip tie anchors and couple of velcro cable ties. Not too bad and definetely gets the job done.

Powerglides seem to be a myth. I dont think one has been made in well over a year now. Maybe the impending redesign will happen but I dont see anyone taking delivery in the near or distant future. It's from OM Laboratories (http://www,theomlabs.com) AKA Edwin Tan with creative input from MrMisse. As it looks like you're in Singapore I guess you know of those guys already. I got mine direct from Edwin but I believe that he has a few dealers in Singapore who have them in stock so you could go and try one out. I just bought mine blind based on a recommendation from a guy on one of the Malaysian Musician's discussion boards.

What it isn't is another tweaked Tubescreamer. What it is is a very versatile OD pedal that's capable of old school Marshally crunch, which is what it's set to do in the above photograph.

Cheers from KL.

I have to ask. Does that OM Labs power supply power the V-Twinl? My main reason for not using my V-Twin is that the power supply I have for it is an Oz one, and that means I have to use a very dodgy adapter that cuts out if someone walks into the room and farts :D

Hi Grap,
Sorry for the late reply. I don't usually use the V-twin, so I didn't get Ed to do a specific supply for it. I have a Euro plug for mine, which is fine for me here in Singapore.

However, Edwin can put a 12v1A supply if needed... just costs more.

Thankfully, my GT-2 just needed a new diode, and it's good as new... so I get to take the Mesa off the board. Having said that, I really enjoyed using it for the past few weeks while the GT-2 was in hospital.

The Keeley is pretty much a Ross clone. So it's similar to the BYOC which is now a five knob pedal (added blend knob) and only $100 if you put it together yourself.

IMO they sound nearly identical and neither is clearly better than the other.

:D i'd probably be impressed myself.

Well, I've been trying to build them up one by one with a new band. I use them all usually but we don't do setlists really so sometimes we don't play a song that needs a certain pedal.

I just added the tremolo for two specific songs but i'm sure there will be instances where I use it for spacey noisey type moments that can come randomly (were heavy on improvisation).

ADL Juicebox - the predecesser to the current Pedalgear.net juicebox. The only difference is the old one has a 9VAC on the back for my TZF while the new one has a 12VAC for some other pedal... (seriously how many 12VAC pedals are there? I thought everything AC was pretty much always 9V in the pedal world.)

csapo- how do you like the keeley comp, i've looking at them wondering if they're as good as a couple of my buddies make them out to be. and is the 4 knob much more versatile than the 2?

awesome board man. i'm digging your delay choices :dude

Thanks!!!

I really like my 4 knob Keeley Comp. I've never used the 2 knob version, so I can't compare.

I used to have a Boss CS-2 and as hard as I tried, I could not get a usable tone out of it. Once my Keeley arrived, it was a complete 180. It allows for great range of compression, from very subtle to A LOT. It can almost be used as a boost as well.

Not everyone bonds with compressors so if your buddies will let you give theirs a try, I would go that route before purchasing...

Its been a while since i've posted here... Still no board... sorry about the mess, I'm recording some stuff, and recording will do this to an otherwise tidy pedalrug :)... I'm really liking this setup. I swap out the model R for my special 4 knob BJF pedal at times... Enjoy!

Gregory... You never know... Maybe if you asked John Landgraff for his painters # you could have it arranged somehow... It'd need to be re-boxed probbaly...

Chris, Yes... a purple TTE. I bought it brand new like that this year... It was done in a limited batch of only 10 purple ones. It's great. I was just playing through it :)

I've been playing with a singer/songwriter where I use them all....

Not crappin' on his board at ALL... in fact, what I said implies his board is great. I just figure, if you can afford all that gear, why put it through that. Why not a Palmer (http://palmergear.com/) or something.

agreed, from an outsider POV..

from an insider as some sort of audio engineer and avid music technology-whatever, those Behringer DI's are among the sturdiest and stageproof things I've seen..
I had to admit that I've never tried the Ultra G's speaker-sim, but the Ultra DI's and even those Sansamp-ripoffs are pretty great sounding..

I do like the industrialized look of his board though..

Maybe I was using mine incorrectly, but everything sounded very synthetic running through the Behringer: lots of added hiss, and I almost preferred the straight ahead DI sound to the speaker sim!

You should try an actual DI, A-Designs REDDI, Groove Tubes BRICK, Demeter Amplification makes a tube DI too, or if you prefer less tube mush, a Great River ME-1NV will color guitar signal nicely, and give the front of house guy a nice hot level to boot! Add a EQ-1NV, and you've got a really flexible rig that will drive a guitar amp as well as the FOH.

Agreed in theory - I've had plenty of cheap stuff sound great! I was just saying, after owning and using one, I thought it sounded bad. Totally turned me off to speaker sims. Honestly - I've gotten better tones running through the clean setting on a Johnson J-Station.

And by the way - Mike - love the black Bi-Chorus!!

I've bought this Behringer Ultra-G last month becuz I can find only a Boss DI-1(with no cab. simulator) and the Ultra-G in stores here, and it sounds okay for me.
Maybe I should try a Palmer PDI-09 next time, thanks for your advice, Ben :)

Cool. I dig it too.

I bet my neighbours hate it. Cramped urban apt = thin walls. We started helping our landlord with building maintenance a year or so ago for a hefty rent reduction. Anyway, I think most of our neighbors must think I'm the landlords son or something, because I was positive that someone would eventually complain about the noise - but not so far.

Thisfire, I ordered my pedal direct from Marc on Aug 24th. He told me the wait should be about a month, so it should be my turn soon if he's on schedule.

I bet! Your pedal has really changed the way I do things.

At the moment I have my Microkorg in the loop. I can use it like an a/b switch to play the Korg through my pedalboard OR I can play guitar through the Korg and use it's filters. I have a few vocoder-esque patches that sound cool and a pretty decent ring mod.

You reminded me that I needed to update my sig.
