View Full Version : Where in the signal chain is your Timmy?
Do you guys run your Timmy in front of other dirt pedals? Do you use it as an OD pedal and a boost/stack for dirt pedals in the signal chain after it? I just got one today :) and hoping to learn from your experience with it. Thank you in advance!!!

I use mine as a volume/solo boost behind my other dirt boxes, last in the signal chain.

my Timmy is the first dirt pedal (not counting my Fuzz face, which is 1st in the chain). It does a good job on its own or boosting my other dirt boxes.

I use it after all other dirt as a boost (low gain, high volume) for the other pedals, and I also use it alone just as my low gain OD. I think the Timmy works great anywhere in the chain (first, last, or in the middle), so it'll just depend on what you want to do with it.

At the end of the dirt. Always on and set fairly mild into a clean amp. Makes everything sound better.

I use my Timmy as a lead boost. I think this role is the ideal place for the Timmy, at the end of the dirt section. I keep all controls around 12 o' clock - I taper the bass a touch, add some treble for a little cutting, and my solos sound great! Once my Tim is done, I'll probably end up selling the Timmy for money toward a Rockbox BP, or place it on a practice board.
Make no mistake, I'll never play without a Tim/Timmy again!

I have a Timmy v2....the bass and treble knobs are cut knobs, right? At 7 o'clock (roughly) it's your amp's bass and treble EQ settings. Then as you turn them up it cuts those frequencies.
Does the original Timmy work that way?
I use mine after my Lovepedal COT50 but before any other dirty. Most OD/distortion comes from my Budda's overdrive channel. Timmy is used on clean channel for some killer low-gain sounds.

Yes. Right now as a global boost final tone shaper at the end.

I have many dirt pedals, but I use only one at a time. Currently, my Timmy is my only dirt pedal on my PT Nano.
It works beautifully both before and after screwdriver very confusing I know I'm struggling with the same question myself

I use it last of the dirt pedals, before modulation, but I guess you can put it anywhere!
I would try both before and after though, I had a germanium fuzz that loved to be after the timmy..

I'm still busy figuring that out as well. I keep on going back and forth.

I still really need to play around, but right now I've got the Timmy first in line since it's the OD I use most of the ones on my board, and I've basically got my pedals ordered in terms of increasing gain.

It works well in either position, but to me the Timmy is doing the magic at the end where its EQ can have a more prominent effect on the pedals before it. But with the exception of position dependent fuzzes, I'd always put those after it. Running a Timmy into a Big Muff gives you potential for lots of fuzzy variations, but put the Timmy after that kind of pedal and it takes too much of the fuzz characteristics away for me and cleans it up too much.
So I'd always go: Fuzz Face type fuzz > Any OD > Any Distortion > Timmy > Big Muff type fuzz.

I find my dirt boxes sound best running into the timmy. Also, the Timmy has a great EQ which may be nice having a flexible EQ at the end of your dirt chain.

That's what I don't get about the Timmy v2's bass and treble knobs. They're cut knobs, can't add bass or treble so you can't really shape anything except takeaway. Don't get me wrong, I love how it sounds....I just don't think it's a tone shaper for me. I use an MXR 10 band eq in my effects loop.

Thanks for this response. Super helpful imo.

I've always put my TIM/my after my other dirt pedals (fuzz & dist) b/c I like to use it to boost the pedals before it, not goose them and add more gain. I also like the EQ options for tone shaping at the end of the dirt chain.

I love everything about it - but the bass is getting loose - then I'll cut a bunch of it and that almost brings in some mids. When I set both knobs all the way down (no cut) - it is not neutral with my rig - the bass changes..
Maybe I'm having this happen because of my Plexi rig and the 4x12 cab. Also I am considering trying other chips but not sure if that will affect the bass. I love the transparency and hope I can get it to work for me because they sound so good.

I love my Tim and Timmy, but I would not keep them if they frustrated me. Life is too short to use frustrating pedals, no matter how good they sound to other gearheads.

I read somewhere that for a proper EQ you cut from the frequency, you don't add to it..
No, timmy is not an EQ pedal, but it does wonders to help you when adding dirt pedals to your chain, some of them sound better with the timmy on! ;)

TIM/my with bass & treble full CCW and gain barely cracked is basically a clean boost. As you crank up the gain you roll off bass (pregain) to keep the bottom end tight and roll off highs (post gain) to filter out fizz. Once you get the hang of it it's an amazingly flexible pedal and you can also swap chips to tweak the high end response. And yes when EQing for recording and live sound it is much preferred to cut rather than boost, this works the same way. If you want to boost mids you boost overall level and then cut bass and treble...
