The seller in the video sounds like a bad used car salesman.

The seller in the video sounds like a bad used car salesman.

Haha he tends to do that, one lucky bastard though.

I wonder if the '62 was used on the recording of "Trademark"?

Anyways Lemme know when Eric decides to sell his '64 SG Standard..

... Why would you sell a guitar that you've done so much with... confuses me.

I think his main ax for many years (not a reissue) has a maple fingerboard. No?

Bitchin' version of "Trademark", that's for sure. He's got so many ways to re-approach his tunes, they never get old.

It's drawing a fair amount of interest... over 1.2 million views to the page. That's a way to get some buzz.

A real '62. First thing I notice is the p'guard isn't anything near those silly mint green 'guards that I pulled off of my '62 Hot Rod Strats. (Nor are the knobs tea-stained brown.)

$90K for insurance? Whats the price on this thing like a million dollars? I cannot figure out why he would sell this....well, unless the price is a million dollars I guess lol.

I have a hard time imagining that Eric Johnson's strat could sell for anywhere near even half a million dollars.

I'm curious about the offer price, but since I have no interest or ability to meet the figure, I will let it go.

It wasn't. That would have most likely been Virginia, EJ's '54 maple-neck Strat. This '62 was long Missing In Action during the Ah Via Musicom recording sessions.

This '62 Strat was stolen from EJ's apartment back in '82 (I believe) along with a black '58 Strat ("Faye"), a 60s 335 (I think), and other guitars. The '62 Strat, black '58 Strat and 335 were recovered a few years ago. EJ has already sold the black '58 Strat as well.

As a friendly sidebar, it's worth mentioning that EJ's been buying, selling, and trading vintage Strats and other top-guitars for ~40 years, making beautiful music with whatever instruments he is using at the time. Just my observation as a long-time fan.

I can't believe he played "Stairway" through it. That just isn't right.

Mike Meyers played Stairway through a strat. :D For a short while at least..

Weird. I've seen Eric maybe 20 times, and the show where he payed this guitar was the best live tone I ever heard him get. He uses it throughout the Live in Anaheim DVD and it's just stupid good. I know he goes through guitars but I don't get this move at all.

Highly unlikely, in my opinion, and it's not my place to speculate. But that said, and having said that, that's why I mentioned earlier in the thread that EJ has been buying, selling and trading vintage guitars for ~40 years. He's always chasing the tone, buying and selling gear in pursuit of the best tone he can get. Also, in a recent guitar magazine, he did mention that he's sold off some gear to help fund his new recording studio.

wow this really surprised me as well.. i have pics on my computer of his 58 les paul gold top when it was for sale.. but i would relate this strat to him more.. weird..

James

He's owned a number of vintage late '50s Bursts. Really, I think at least a half-dozen different ones over the years. If I recall correctly, he didn't own that '58 goldtop for that long at all.

In his GP interview in 1986, EJ talks about the Black Strat being stolen, and he said in the interview that it was the best sounding Strat he'd ever played, and that he'd do whatever it took to get it back. So, why do you sell the best sounding Strat you'd ever played?

One thing to consider is that Eric is first and foremost a player and not strictly a collector. I've played a few old Strats and have a friend with a really nice '63 but there is a problem. The rosewood board on those guitars are very thin and you can only do so many refrets. We are talking a nearly 50 year old guitar. It could just be that the guitar is beyond re-freting and to recap it with a new rosewood board would surely kill the collector value and it may not sound the same. This is the problem my friend has with his '63. It can't be re-fretted anymore as the rosewood is gone. He just keeps playing it with nearly flat frets.

The financial aspect with Eric is anyone's guess but for me I've played very few old rosewood strats that I felt were worth keeping for the aforementioned reasons.

Here is is on ebay (and now we know why insurance was 'for' 90K ) - it's 90,000 bucks. or best offer:

I just checked - the link is no longer good, and it doesn't appear to be on ebay anymore... Maybe Eric changed his mind? (or, someone BOUGHT it!) EEEEEK

How did this Eddie Vega guy get the guitar from EJ? I wonder how the process is...is he selling it for him?

Innit that weird how the ebay listing changed from EJ's '62 Strat to a '78 Fender Precision bass?

:huh

Never seen that happen before...

Because it isn't the best sounding strat he's ever played. It's just supposed to be. Clearly his signatures are good enough and his replacement cost if they are lost or damaged beyond repair is in the $0 to $800 range depending on his deal with Fender and how many they've already given him...

Soak it in tea and I might be interested. Doesn't match the rest of the plastic on my road worn... Just kidding... I don't have a roadworn:D

Anyone notice how the strat in the EJ videos this salesman posted on his ebay sale doesn't have the same wear as the strat he's selling? There is a lot of wear on the bottom and back of the lower bout of the strat for sale and I don't see any of that on the youtube vids of EJ playing it at an experience hendrix concert.
