This is one of those amps that has always fascinated me. Made in the early 80's, and I checked Blue Book, had a list price of $2000 in 1982! Damn. And 200 watts? Holy crap! The only Marshall that has a mid sweep . . . very interesting. Over a number of years, I've only ever seen one for sale on ebay. Are they that rare? Has anyone here played one before? Is their basic tone a JCM 800? Being a big Marshall guy, I'd love to be able to play one sometime. Anyone know of any floating around, or are they rare enough that only collectors have them?

There has to be somebody here who has a little knowledge in this uber-rare Marshall . . . or at least some interest!

Definitely sounds interesting but this is the first I've heard of it.

I'm beginning to think I'm the only one who even knows it exists.

There's quite a bit of info on the History of Marshall book by Michael Doyle. I remember the book stated something about being designed with input from Angus and Malcomn Young from AC/DC, or somethign like that. They also had a Bass amp version as well. Suppossed to be a relatively clean amp from what I've heard. Check out the Doyle book.

If its a 200 watter..its probably quite similar to the Marshall 1967 200 watt amps...4 x kt88 based..the characteristics sound similar..Ritchie Blackmore was supposed to have used these with deep purple.

This one being so rare, I doubt you'd find anyone who've heard on on here. Perhaps over at the Marshall forum or Plexi Palace, where vintage buffs seem to hang more frequently. Then suppose it's essentially a Major but w. JCM800 preamp I could figure out roughly what that would sound like.
you'll find some info on plexipalace (see posts by tommie).

I owned one years ago. They are very rare...only 100 or so made if I remember correctly. The MV channel sounded more JCM800 but with more preamp gain as a I recall. The NMV Channel was basically a 1959SL circuit. I think mine had 6 KT88's in it. It wasnt as loud as you might think. In fact I was suprised at the volume level. I expected it to be alot louder. The Marshall Majors that I have played have all been noticebly louder than the 2000. Also, like the Majors, the very high B+ made it unstable. If I cranked the volume up past 5 or so it would start blowing fuses. My amp tech at the time said it was a design flaw and he eventually was able to get it to be more stable. But I cant remember what he did. I eventually sold it to a Major collector who still uses it today. All in all, it was a rare and cool amp. I do regret selling it a little. I have a seen a few for sale since then but I dont want to spend the money they typically ask for these. I think the demand for them is more from a collector's point of view rather than a utility point of view.
