View Full Version : Picks: D'Andrea 358 vs. Fender 358?

Been using Fender 358's for over 40 years. D'Andrea has what is reported to be the same size pick, but made out of Delrex. I'd like to try 'em.
- Has anyone tried the D'Andrea Delrex picks?
- Anyone know what size D'Andrea (in mm's) is equivalent to a Fender "Heavy"?
I've used the purple, 1.14 mm D'andrea. Seems to be the same thickness as the Fender, but stiffer in feel.

I contacted D'Andrea and they were kind enough to respond within hours. As a PSA, I thought I'd share. Here's what they said:
Celluloid picks in heavy are .96mm. At least ours are. And if you’re referring to 358 picks made from 2007 and back, then those are ours. (Fender hasn’t used us for a few years now because they now purchase their picks from China.)
The materials are different so there is a difference in relative rigidity.
Delrex picks tend to be a bit more rigid than celluloid.
So I would try the MH .88mm (green) and also the H 1.00mm (blue) which would be the closest to the actual thickness of the heavy celluloid.
I am looking forward to trying them out.
BTW, I have noticed that the Fender picks have had a slightly different profile for the past few years - they don't narrow-down as quickly as the older ones I have. I wonder if this is the "China Effect"?
