I really like the echo that Beck gets on the Live at Ronnie Scotts and songs like Where Were You. Is it a long delay with long "early reflections"?

I am used to a 3 knob echo units so I am not that familiar with the other settings one can achieve with a rack echo. Also I want to stick with pedals, I have the Roland Space Echo, the Line 6 echo (green one) and a MXR Carbon copy.

I know some of you are big Beck fans, can ya spare a setting or two?

Good question! How he gets this tone? Reverb tone is great.

Jeff Beck uses an 'Alex' Lexicon reverb unit (see ontop of his Marshall) he keeps going back and increasing and decreasing the level depending on the song...

they sell for about $100-200 bucks on the bay.

I have one and it gets you right there with Becks reverb tone

Yes Tomo, that's exactly what I'm talking about. I thought it was added on later on his recordings but it appears he relies on his own unit sitting on his Marshall.

At least I'll have the real thing for comparison and if I don't want to deal with the rack thing then I'll sell it later. Now if I could just get that microscope on the video to find out what channel he's on!!!! God I'm turning into a guitar nerd groupie...:bow

So Echoes: where is the starting point on the unit settings?

I also remember reading an interview with the same tech and he said that Jeff has a TC 22900 and the lexicon reverb which the sound guy controls from the board.

I didn't hear him say in the video that he was controlling the echo per say from the PA/off stage. And since Mr. Beck has that Lexicon right on stage with him and he's making adjustments on stage, it only makes sense that the Lexicon is the unit doing the reverb/echo. That's my bet anyway...

You should ask Jeff Beck... That's a pic of one of his rigs, not mine. ;)

He didn't say it in the video. I mentioned I read an interview where he mentioned that.

A fellow TGP'er posted pics from a show a month ago and he was using Fender champs or pro Jr's or something sitting on top of a marshall. The marshall wasn't mic'ed, but one of the tiny fenders was! interesting...

I love that he's always trying out new gear, and pushing the boundaries of his music. A true artist

How recent is this pic ? Any idea if he use the same pedal board with those 2 little Fender amps as well ? Honestly, I'm more interested in knowing if the Tube Factor is being used with those little Fenders :) Love that pedal.

Cheers !!!

It's an older pic. He changes gear to suite his whims/needs. The guy is just amazing ridiculous great.

In July 2010 he used:

Snarling Dog Whine-O-Wah
Klon Centaur
H&K leslie thing

He played into custom Fender Pro JR, did not have any reverb/echo pedals or rack units. Delays and reverbs were post-effects from the sound engineer, not sure if he used Lexicon or something else. It was a big venue, probably he will setup differently in a club format.

Check out the videos with Jan Hamer; the ones where he's playing a 2-tone sunburst. You'll hear some delay, not reverb. It's a little easier to hear without the reverb. With the units you already own, you can get the same early-reflection kinda reverbish delay, it has to do with continually adjusting mix/feedback to the situation. Just like Jeff is always fiddling; use your ears.

Hopefully the Lexicon Alex will be here by the end of the week. I'll let you know if I turn into an instant Jeff Beck or not. I don't know if I could handle the hair style though....

Looks like only 2 are plugged in. He probably has the rest up on stage so that backups are readily available and to create that "WTF" feeling and visual

TomoOkay, I've been twiddling with my Alex, and trying to read those knobs on Becky's video. I'm pretty sure its set on the vocal plate setting, and the echo you hear towards the end of the song (at 3:51 you can hears some faint repeats) must be added at the board. Nice reverb though, I love it for the ballad stuff.

yes, he used an alex on the ronnie scott's video, but i saw him a few months ago and he did not use it at that show.

all of his delays and reverbs were added by the foh and monitor engineers.

if you want a complete detail of his live rig get the tone quest report magazine from a couple of months ago. they dedicated pretty much a whole issue to him and go over his recent tour gear in great detail.

The only thing I hate is having one piece of rack gear while everything else sits in a pedal board. I just bought the new Digitech RV-7 and it has "Lexicon" verbs in it. I'll have to a-b them and see how close I can get to the Alex. I certainly can see why Beck still uses it.
