what would be the most inexpensive D style amp I can get my hands on. I love the feel they provide, plus the tone is sooo smooth and what not.

dont want any "dumble sounds suck" answers. just a direction to go in to get one "d style" amp for not alot of outlay!

thanks!

Dont need a loud amp either 20w would be fine. im looking for the clean, smooth, never ending sustain and harmonics that come from the d style circuits.

I have a VVT X40 head that's D-Inspired....awesome tones in a small package.

Brad,

how does it sound compared to say a TR Jet? I think the 22w version of the x would be a good fit for me...only playing in my basement at the moment

Sorry, I have no idea..never played a TR or any other D-Style amp for that matter. The VVT has a good master volume so either one would work for low volume...just depends on if you like 6V6 tones or 6L6 tones and how much grind you want from the power section. The drive channel is smokin on these, doubt you would really need to get the power section barking too much. If you're any where near central Va you're welcome to come check it out. Just shoot me a pm. I have some clips also, I'll try to dig them up and send them to you.

Brown Note D-Lite should certainly be on your list.

a few clips a the X40...mostly with a tele. I think there was a 335 in there somewhere. Just some some home demos so don't expect studio quality...
All done at bedroom levels except the first one that says cranked clean channel.

Sound great Brad. ;)

Thanks! Not sure how "D" the clips sound. I wasn't really trying to dial in any Carlton/Ford type tones on those.... but there they are for whatever it's worth. I will say there's lots of different tones in there that can be dialed in.

I think the Omega modded HRDs sound great in the clips I've heard. Fuchs mods are also a great deal and sound amazing. Ceriatone is probably next up in price.

Before you spend an arm and a leg I would try a zendrive through whatever amp you own. Just saw Larry Carlton about 2 weeks ago and ran a zendrive through a hotrod deville. I just got one and I'm loving it, of course... I am getting a Fuchs HT ODS50 SLX here in the next day or too...

I dont know anything about D style crap, but......

I just got a Frenzel HBX-WC30, running it on both EL84's and EL34's, and it is the best amp I've ever had. I have not looked at another amp since, and I had GAS (an amp every 6 months) as bad as anybody.

Frenzel is grossly under rated and under estimated.

You can find early model Two-Rocks in the low $2k range, that's a lot of value.

Ceriatone definietely!
Or if you want an amp-in-a-can an Ethos would get you close!

For tone itself, the pedals are great.
But if one is interested, it is cool to get this style of amp to play with it and get the feel of the various controls, settings, etc., and feel the thing. I really enjoy playing with the knobs and switches in combination with guitars and playing styles and trying to understand - and dig - the results.

Thanks Madison! I happened to catch Jim Hill (VVT Owner) in town when he was visiting Fralin's shop and he had an X40 with him. He was nice enough to meet up with me and let me hear it. Placed an order and drove up to Waldorf and picked up mine when it was ready. Give Jim a call ...or you're more than welcome to come hear this one.

I'd love to try it, sounds like a cool amp for $1,000.00. I can bring my Two Rock Jet to compare. thanks!

Yeah, try and find A Fuchs ODS. Another route would be a Barber Small Fry ($150) through a good Fender style amp.
