View Full Version : Does anyone run a Marshall-ish head and a Fender-ish head into the same cab?

I have an Oldfield Club D'Lux (Deluxe Reverb clone), and I'm considering buying some flavor of Plexi-ish clone amp. Problem is, I don't want to carry 2 combos for gigs, so I've considered re-cabbing the Oldfield into a head cab and using both amps into the same cabinet with an A/B/Y looper.

Does anyone have speaker suggestions that would work REASONABLY well with both amps? I'm thinking maybe Tone Tubby or C-Rex, since they work well for the Fender at a clean setting. I did not like what the Tone Tubby did to the tone of the Deluxe at volume, so I switched to a Weber, but it sounds fantastic with my Fender Concert (Rivera era), so I'm wondering if it would work in a 2x12 configuration with a Plexi.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Just so you don't blow up your heads: You can't use an a/b/y looper to switch heads into a cabinet, you need a specialized product for that, that has a dummy load for the heads not in use.

Or are you thinking one head for each speaker in the cab? If so you are of course fine.:)

Whoops! Thanks for the advice, Blix. I was going to just A/B/Y under the theory that the one not in use would not be taking a load from the speakers. It sounds like whether it is engaged or not it is?

I assume if I Google "amp switcher" I'll be able to find such a product?

Thanks again -- you probably just saved me a ton of $$$$.

Haha good, that would have been an expensive lesson ;)

Here's one: http://www.tonebone.com/tb-headbone-vt.htm

Radial makes a product just for this....it's called the head bone. Works like a charm.

Ooh Boy. I traveled down that expensive road. I have a Marshall 4x12, using the radial head bone to run two heads into one cab. I bought a Fargen Blackbird (Fender Deluxe clone) for cleans, along with my 79 Marshall JMP for dirt. Tried all kind of speaker combinations, but what worked with one head usually caused the other to suffer. Ended up getting a Metro 68 plexi clone, sold the Blackbird. Now I have both sounds that I can live with that work pretty darn well for live gigs...BTW the cab now has a combination of Celestion G12t-75s and V30s.

Anybody need some Greenbacks or Naylor SD50s (16 ohm)???...:)

Hmmm. Now I'm wondering if I should load a cab with 1 Weber and 1 Celestion (or something along those lines) and just use 1 speaker per amp. Not sure how that would work.

Tadeimy, did you ever try any of the hempcones?

Many years ago I had a marshall 4 12 cab loaded with three grey bell celestions. Two closed back one open, and one with no cone. Some wizard set it up so I could go from a vox ac30 head to a Bassman riged to be like a JTM. It was cool as heck. The single speaker, (I'm sorry this is the important part and I dont remember) took the load of the head not in use. Later it was wired so you could switch two 12 to either head but both were on always. I could just scroll from open to closed cab. Neat stuff

The things we go through to get to the next thing we think will be great.

I run my old 50 watt jmp marshall and my two rock (fender type) in my old marshall cab with 25 watter blackbacks, both amps sound really nice through it,
but then again every single amp played through that bottom sounds better,
including all my combo's too,

Cool, thanks Bigtone.

Funky, I wish I could claim I was trying to get to the next thing I think will be great. Unfortunately, I'm just lazy and I don't want to carry 2 combos or 2 cabs up the stairs :rotflmao

Bf bandmaster and a 1987 metro into a stereo Marshall 4x12... Does that count? Have not (nor may I ever) yet had the opportunity to take it out to a live venue.

You'll want to make sure that your single speakers can take the full load of whatever amp(s) you end up with. And then some.

I've got a stereo 2x12 (actually two) loaded with Eminence Delta ProA speakers; they're rated to handle 400W each. Pretty efficient, too, with an SPL of nearly 100.

The big weight will be in those tube transformers, though.

It would be a lot lighter to carry a modeler, a solid state power amp (you can get 1500W in a 14-pound package) and one of these:

That cabinet will handle up to 1000W, weighs just 42 pounds, is louder than most 4x12s, has an L-paddable tweeter and will reproduce anything from about 40Hz to 20Khz.
Most modelers will let you switch between entire rigs (amps, cabs, fx) with a single stomp and many will let you run two complete rigs at a time (wet/dry, etc).

No, just some different celestions and the Naylor SD50s....

Going to "Marshall Style" cleans solved my problem. The Blackbird sounded great, just not with any speakers that also didn't compromise my JMP tone...
