Mind if I ask a follow up Q?
I realize V1 is generally consided one of the most important for tone, and V3 is the phase inverter, also can have a significant effect. What's the story on poor little V2?

I think v2 is generally the "drive" channel tube for mutichannel amps, and delivers the add'l gain. Since it generally takes the signal that v1 and the tone stack generate and pushes it further (and only on the drive channel), v2's tonal impact is less than v1's (which affects everything in the amp).
