i'll try this again.
i'm looking for the traditional marshall "drive" with quite a bit more gain and a thicker tone (more bottom). can i do this with a 79' JMP, or will i have to start with a jcm 800?
all input is appreciated,
dave
Is it because the stock '79 Marshall M. volume is pre phase inverter? Isn't there the basic mod that puts it after the PI? I was chasing that for awhile a few years ago as I have the same amp. May try that soon, as I got frustrated with mine! A buddy bought one and it smoked mine, his was stock w/6550s. Mine is dark til it gets cranked.

Aren't the MV JMP & the 800 pretty much the same amp?
I'd start by removing the ceramic cap from the pre vol pot if you haven't already. If my memory is correct, I think I moved that cap to the input jack to kill the radio noise.
I also run mine with RCA 12ax7's. They have less gain but it smoothes out the sound quite a bit. The EH 12ax7 aren't too bad in that amp either, if you prefer new tubes.
