Question about getting caps replaced

If I wanted to get a cap job for my vintage Twin, should I be getting the tech to be using a certain brand/kind of caps for the best tone and performance? I don't know much about caps, but I'm assuming there are some that are better than others? how much do these affect the tone?

for your vintage twin I'd suggest you get the tech to use the best he can find, scrimping for $30 to $50 dollars difference in price on a job that only has to be done every 15 to 20 years just doesn't make sense. I'd (at this point) probably use F&T's for the filters if it was me. I'd make sure he/she replaced the filter caps and cathode bypass caps(all) and didn't replace any of the others unless they were demonstrably defective. As long as the filter caps are good, of the proper value and doing their job, your tone won't suffer, as for the others, well, that gets into religious discussions but any good mallory-type, solen, auricap, OD, vit-Q etc. will keep the tone standards high. If you have a bad coupling or tone cap, any good replacement will certainly sound better <G>. You can always experiment w/ those until you find the sound you're happiest with.

Go to Doug Hoffman's web sight and buy a couple of IC 100/350 and 3 or 4 22/500. You can get the elytic bypass caps from him also.

most tads are made in asia, but the exensive ones (audio caps) are made in Germany - possibly by F&T
