View Full Version : Uh, anyone out there buying a Toilet?

With the advent of my second kid finishing up potty training, it looks like someone in the house at least 3 times a week is clogging up the toilet with Unmentionables. The early low flush toilet upstairs is manageable, but the downstairs one just refuses to flush clean now - EVER.

So screw it.

Getting the Toto Drake installed this week, to the tune of $685 purchased, delivered and installed. Yeah, it's pricey for a freaking toilet, but if I have to lug one more freaking bowl of water to the toilet in hopes that gravity finally kicks in to flush it out, I'm going to go bonkers.

What do you think, all?

Love the Drake. Purchased a second home 3 years ago and remodeled both bathrooms. Both have Toto sinks and toilets.

We did the Carollton in one, and I can't remember the other one.

I'm kicking Kohler to the curb in my principle residence in the next 12 months.

I bought/installed 3 Toto 'Supremes'. They really back up their products!

When I was growing up, I had two dreams. One was being an astronaut and landing on the planet Jane Mansfield. The other was having a bathroom all to myself. Well, Daddy got blown off course and had to crash on a much darker planet. But family, I'm going to realize my second dream. I'm going to build a bathroom -- the greatest bathroom in the world. And I want you to know something, all of you -- NOBODY USES THAT BATHROOM BUT ME.

$700? For a Toilet?

What makes it so special? I read some of the review but wasn't interested enough to continue. I literally spent today pulling out my toilet and putting it back in due to a leak in the wall behind it. What a PITA. Bathroom is due to be gutted, so I'll be in the market soon, but I'm not getting the lure of this one.

I'm a "buy the best - you'll never regret it" kind of guy. Why is this one the best?

Al Bundy preferred the Fergeson because it was the only bowl that could handle a man.

I know it's a hard concept to grasp, but I have a Toto Carolton and swear by it. It's never came close to backing up while the American Standard in the other bathroom has coughed up it's dinner about once a year. Granted the kids use it, but still. I don't think it's exclusive to a Toto but ours has a self closing lid that is a blessing also.

OK, so a quick Googling shows that this is a $200-300 given that I'd install it myself.

That's a bit more reasonable.

I've been REAL happy with my Kohlers and their "Class 6" flushing. No more clogs. Period.

Peace.

(Damn. I am in the "pub" responding to a thread about toilets. That's bad.)

You look for flush, gallons used, toilet height and whether you get an elongated to catch the drip. Ask your Wife if she wants a taller toilet. I'm 5,8" and it was a welcome not to have o squat an extra inch or two lower.

But if you get it from the cheapest place, they have a hidden charge, $170 for freight handling - although the "shipping" is free. Brings it up to $370 before tax.

So I paid around $400 for the toilet and all the stuff to install it, and the guy charges a few hundred to pop it in there and grab the toilet local for me at the contractor's warehouse (i figure the guy will pick out a good one to show up with versus me dealing with the hassle of a shipped one).

I'm designing and adding a modified five gallon gas tank in order to maintain proper disappearance protocol.

I HATE these new wimpy 2 gallon misery makers.

I'm a plumbing contractor that's been very happy with the Kohler class 5 as well. Good toilet. TOTO is a good toilet as well.

A Boo- Teek Toilet on the TGP. You don't say and Holy Crap !

The kid at Lowes told me that the Jacuzzi for $120ish is just as good as the top end toilets they sell as well as the Kohlers . He was right. Installed it a year ago and I love it. Nice and tall and mega flushing capacity.

I don't install toilets for a living but maybe I should start at $200 a pop. Takes 15 minutes and a quick smack or 2 with a sledge hammer to the old one and it will shatter in a hundred little pieces that will fit in a garbage can. Or maybe they are worth something at the dump, don't really know?

My girlfriends grandparents have a heated TOTO with a bodee (SP?). It has a bunch of different functions. It's awesome and some of my best sits have been on that toilet.

Hmmm maybe I have not experienced life properly until I have taken a dump on a Toto ?

FWIW, I wrote my best song on a toilet. So you guys are saying that maybe I would write better songs on a Toto ?

Whoa, interesting moment last night. Told my wife about the incoming Toto, and she freaked out. Apparently amongst her circles, the Toto is well known - "Those are top of the line Japanese Toilets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toto_Ltd.)!" Who knew that anyone talked about toilets outside of, uh, TGP. Me nonchalantly mentioning Toto was as if my wife walked in one day and said "by the way, I just had a dinner event where some guy named Clapton was playing guitar for us. Ever hear of him?"

I have 2 Totos in my house, and I"m also a plumbing contractor. They are very good. Got one for my bathroom that's 17" high so a little easier sitting on. But I think $6-700 installed is a bit much.....

Hey, Totally Bored - please do install toilets - that way they will call me to fix it when you take your 15 minutes to install it. There's a reason I'm constantly going out to fix a rocking toilet, or re-wax when tile 'men' (who "know" how to set a toilet) put one in! ;)

If high end guitars are for cork-sniffers, what's the analogy for high end toilets?

that's what i was thinking! takes a little longer than that to do it right, even in new construction, especially on a remod.

You guys ?

Okay maybe it takes a little longer than 15 minutes but please, it's a very easy job. Mine don't rock or leak etc etc. I could easily bang a bunch of these out in a day but if i was a toilet install only specialist, I wouldn't get much work me thinks.

Update - I wouldn't have believed it unless I flushed it myself, which I did. The Toto drained in a split second, quietly and no more "refill" noises after a few seconds, and crazy powerful. This is the best gear upgrade since I traded in a Vox Valvetronix for a Twin Reverb! It came with the Toto soft close seat, which my wife loves since it means no more lids slammed down by the kids. The best part? My building pulled a shimmy on my contractor, driving him off with claims that he needed remodeling insurance to do the job (which would have meant $400 on top of toilet costs, forget that) so with my supe's help we stuck the toilet in there ourselves after a quick $30 trip to Home Depot for the gear. It works great, no sealing problems or anything. Saved myself a pretty penny!

Yes, the toilet was rather a simple job. Congrats.
