Reading this thread brought a tear to my eye. I'm so sad to hear that one of GP brothers has passed and was dealing with illness. The amazing thing is all the love Barry had with friends from this forum and outside the forum. I didn't know him but sure wish I did. He seemed like a fantastic person with a passion for music that oozed from his pores.
Life is too short my friends and it times like this that remind me about that.
RIP Barry and all the best to his family and friends. :(

Fair winds and following seas Barry - You were an inspiration to me and many others, thank you always.
I sincerely hope the gear in your next destination exceeds your expectations :aok
Peace to those grieving, and may Barry's family be consoled knowing that not many have been blessed by such a great man as he...
P.S. After not being around here too much lately, and reading through this entire thread, I once again see the greatness that TGP represents.
And even though we have lost a great, Barry himself would tell us to keep going, "Just do it"...that smile will never, ever fade :)

This news is so sad - Barry was a warm, genuine guy who's love of all things 'slide' was infectious. Even though we're over the pond in England we shared many phone calls about slides & slide materials ~ Barry even entrusted overseas shipping to send me his favorite Nunwell glass slides for us to look at & copy.....R.I.P Barry - you'll be sorely missed...

I've just read each and every post in this thread and it's wonderful and amazing and yet tragic to see how many worlds Barry touched. I never new him, but already miss him.
There's a song by Bruce Springsteen, 'Terry's Song'. Listen to it because it seems to sum it all up.

they broke the mold"

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but what a lovely tribute to Barry by Joe Coffey of Premier Guitar in the December 2010 issue at page 8. So true: for all of the reasons we've acknowledged, Barry was so wonderful and we'll always miss him.

This is a beautifully written testimony, as only a deep and dear friend could deliver.
I just learned of Barry's passing and am both shocked and saddened. It's reassuring to know that hes seems to have had his worldly and spiritual affairs in order for the voyage to the other side.
Thanks for sharing this most intimate reflection and experience.
We all just lost a great one.
I was with Barry late afternoon yesterday. He was in good spirits, with that sparkle in his eye shining as bright as ever, radiating and filling the room around him with warmth in a profound way.
We spoke about everything. The gear lord that he was, couldn't help but chat about amps and guitars if only for a little bit.
I won't go into the more personal things.
I will say this, I have been speaking with Barry regularly before and since the beginning of this ordeal with illness, which came on suddenly and at one point seemed to be totally cured. Suddenly again it came back and with a terrible ferocity.
In times like these, faced with mortality and frightening illness a person is laid bare and the true make of a man can be revealed.
It was extraordinary sharing this time with Barry. He was as solid as a rock, given to incredible humour, often gallows humour, astoundingly never without grace, dignity and strength. He would always ask first and with great interest how me and my family were doing.
When we were saying goodbye yesterday I was holding his hand and the look and expression on his face was so full of warmth and understanding as if to comfort me to put me at ease. I will never forget that image and moment for all my life.
He was in my opinion at peace with himself and his situation. He spent much of his challenging time relentlessly and with all the effort he could muster working to get things in order for his wife Sonja and family. Sonja is also an extraordinary woman who was so strong, loving and positive for him despite her own personal and deep grief.
I believe the peace of mind he expressed was due to having lived a life of value and quality. Making a difference and having a positive influence on so many.
I will miss him dearly as will so many others.
p.s.one of his last wishes was to have a "going away" party at his studio. His band would play and so would everyone else who wanted to and have a good time. This was where his head was at, celebrate a good life well lived, not mourn it Sadly he didn't make it to that day but I hope everyone who knew him plays a chord or tasty slide riff while thinking of him and let the sounds he loved ring in tribute.
Here I'm just digging the heck out the tones only Barry could coax out of his axe:

I just read this again and it is so touching and heart wrenching. I can't imagine setting foot in the NY Amp Show this spring without Barry organizing the TGP breakfast club. Perhaps we can organize it ourselves and can do something to dedicate it to Barry. Maybe have a big photo of him there and a place to sign our tributes to him? And have this year's photo of all of us at the breakfast club around the photo. I can't imagine the show without him, frankly. Maybe Lonnie can also do something in dedication to Barry.

I'm devastated hearing this news. My heart goes out to Sonja and Adam.
I had the pleasure of knowing Barry and we became immediate friends during the '04(?) Florida ToneFest.
A True Gentleman, a fine player, and a great friend.
I remember quite a few awesome memories that I'll share with you all-
1. Barry and Tomo coming to my home studio and jamming with the St Pete crew 'til 3 am and just tearing it up!! He was playing my '59 ES355 thru my Tungsten High powered Cortez and I was playing my EDS 1275 that belonged to Jimmy Page, and Barry, Tomo and I were trading licks and he was soooo inspiring to me that night that I swear my playing improved a 100% after that. At one point there were 6 people playing guitar, 2 playing bass, and 2 playing drums!!!
2. Having the most amazing meal at Milo's in NYC with Barry and Sonja and my girlfriend. We were up in The Big Apple to see Duran Duran at MSG and Barry suggested Milo's for a great meal. We were ther for 3 hours and the drink portion of the tab was $400!!! I could barely walk or talk afterwards but Barry was hardly even fazed and just looked at my GF and said ever so kindly " I think its time to put Ricky in a cab before he gets thrown out of New York!!"
3. Going to see Roger Waters perform Dark Side of the Moon at the Jones Beach Amphitheater on a Full Moon, it was a misty and stormy night with Barry and Sonja. It was so beautiful seeing Barry and Sonja together that night, he absolutley adored her and deeply loved her. That was a magical night.
4. Sitting at the front table at BB Kings in NYC watching Sonny Landreth tearing it up and then going back to Barrys to jam into the wee hours.
5. Barry and Clem coming to my home studio in Florida and us doing a 45 minute version of Third Stone from the Sun, just fantastic!!
And there are so many more great memories, Barry will be dearly missed but you can bet your ass he will not ever be forgotten, the man is STILL a GIANT and I am happy and lucky to have known him and been his friend.
It puts a huge smile on my face just to think of him, I am not sad, he would not have allowed it. I just called his cell phone and left him a message and it made me very happy to hear his voice again.
Barry, you are, and will always be, one of my dearest friends!!!!:D:D:D:D:D

The NY AMP SHOW will not be the same without Barry. However I'm certain, after reading this thread, that his spirit will live on in each of you who's life he touched. Barry will always be a part of all of us.
As we enter the holiday season, let's truly give thanks.
I have dedicated the next New York show to Barry's memory.

My online Premier Guitar issue arrived yesterday and I just opened it and learned the bad news. I was at the 2009 NJ Amp Show and walked into a discussion room a few minutes late so I missed the introductions. Barry was moderating and I kept thinking that I knew him from somewhere. Later I saw his postings here and someone mentioned Antiques Road Show and I realized where I had seen him. Since then, when I see him on ARS, I say to my wife "hey there's that guitar guy from the forum."
Very sad.

Similar to the last few posts above, I just learned of this when I was looking through the new Issue of Premier Guitar. It is an honor to Barry that so many thought so much of him. I am so glad I had the chance to read his posts and participate with him in his love of music and guitars through the Gear Page and all of our family here.

Ive been too busy to spend much time online lately, but this morning I opened up my new issue of Premier Guitar and my heart literally sank. It was one of those moments where you're blindsided and you catch yourself tearing up. I have souch fond memories of Barry and that smile. As you can see by the pictures, he spent a lot of time in our room at the NY Amp Show each year, always up for snapping a few pics with the Dumble and Trainwrecks, and then we always had the pleasure of listening to him play. Just a monster player. More importantly though, a real nice guy who always lit up the room with that smile and laugh. We can only feel lucky that our time with him, either via TGP or in person, was all about his passion. We were all part of his fun "get away" time which is cool. We're all quite lucky and he will be missed!

After being offline a good bit over the past few months, I just learned from Dean Farley of Barry's passing.
Such a tragic loss.
Dean and I traded stories about time spent with Barry, and our conversation went from raucous laughter to fighting back tears.
I had chatted with Barry a number of times in email over the years, and he went far out of his way to help me greatly with info. I can't help but remember most everything about my limited time spent with him, but as all of the posts in this thread show, he truly was unforgettable.
Barry was such a character. Every communication I had with him had always been very friendly. But when I was blessed to finally meet him at Tampa Tonefest, the first thing he did was walk straight up to me with a deadpan straghtface and said, "Tonedady......6000 posts and still nothing to say," and then tossed me this look of disgust. He held it for about 10 seconds while my mind desperately tried to figure out if I had said or done something to piss him off, then he busted out in teasing laughter.
:D
During two long evening dinners I sat next to him, over the course of those hours it seemed like we talked about so many passions in his life, from gear to family to food to jewelry and much more. We ended up at a local club one night to watch a local band play, and he sat watching the guitarist so intensely, as if he could soak up every note and technique he could digest.
But more than any other memory I have of Barry, it is one moment watching him play at Tonefest. He always seemed to be smiling, but during the day I looked at him once and saw this look on his face of complete and total bliss. It's a look I've rarely seen on anyone's face before or since, but at that moment, Barry was reaching for the heavens.
Barry, you've finally touched them.

I met Barry for the first time at the 2009 New York/NJ amp show in the 3 Monkeys room. What a nice guy and entertaining. He brought the frankenstrat with him and let me play it through the Grease Monkey and Orangutan amps they had on display. Very generous guy and its a shame to see him leave the planet. Kudos to Joe Coffey for his wonderful eulogy of Barry in this months Premier Guitar. To do this is a very very classy and very humanizing thing for a national magazine.

I also was in the camp of barely knew him yet somehow he made a great, warm impression. He made that FrankenStrat sing -- what was it, a 50s-something neck?
Sad to hear of his passing -- when good folks go it's like the whole world gets a hole punched in it -- not poetic (sorry), you get what I mean. Maybe he's now teaching Messers Hendrix, Rhoads et al to play slide...nice to think about, anyway.
My condolences to his good friends here and his wife, and props to Joe C. and PG mag.

I'm late to this one. Was watching Antiques Road Show last week and watched Barry assess a woman's antique jewelry. Then at the end of the show there was a memorium honoring ARS appraisers who had passed away. Must have been at least 10, and then there was Barry listed last. I was unaware of his passing. We only crossed paths 3 or 4 times on TGP. But in each case he offered detailed insights into the question at hand.

I just got a spam email from Barry's account and it sure caught me off guard to see Sender-"Barry Weber" on an incoming email. Made me do some real introspective thinking the last few minutes....
Barry we miss you!

Me too, got two spams today.....sad really. Now he'll live on through that...lol.
I noticed that my daily coffee cup (saying "we the willing led by the unknowing etc..") was a gift from Barry and he signed the bottom. I haven't deleted him from my cell phone yet...sigh.

I got one too -
I didn't know they had email in Gear and Tone Heaven, where I'm certain Barry has earned a place.
I still miss him, but I'm not quite as shocked anymore as I was about his passing. I say this because when I saw the email, it made me smile, thinking his old account had probably been pirated - apparently, even residence in Heaven doesn't give your email acct a pass from hackers.

Somebody who had Barrys email in the contact list got infected with a spyware and now it got onto spammers list of active addresses. I don't think anyone broke into yahoo account.
But receiving it at this time was a bit spooky , almost exactly a year since we last spoke....

Another Nashville Amp Expo passed last weekend and I truly missed Barry's prescence because this was the anniversary of first finding out he wasn't coming to last years event and wouldn't be beating his cancer. I wanted to write to apologise to some of his close friends who were at last years show and were asking me where he was and when he would be coming in because he had already called and told me he wouldn't be making it in due to his sickness. He had me promise not to tell anyone about his situation which was very difficult since I didn't want to lie but couldn't go against his wishes. I was truly honored to be probably the first friend that he confided in about this but it really made it difficult to feel good about the show with all his close friends waiting patiently for his arrival knowing he wouldn't make it. I definitely felt his prescence around me during my seminar and dedicated the SSB encore to him like I always now do and really hope he was up there listening in during the show! I will never forget my good friend no matter how many shows go by because he was always there smiling up at me and egging me on to crank it! RIP up there man and hope you know how much you meant to all of us.....from your pal in NashVegas,Tn!:beer

Woke at 2am one day last week. Went down stairs and turned on the TV and had a weird feeling when hitting the button. First thing I saw was Barry on the Road Show. Miss him!

I've been away from TGP for awhile and just saw this. I am having a hard time processing and absorbing the news. I met Barry the first time at the NYC tonefest in about 03 - when Jack Devine demo'd most of the amps and Barry MC'd the whole thing. That was also when Tomo burst on to many TGP people's radar. I spoke with Barry many times after that, and he was such a warm, caring person. Such a huge loss for everyone that he is gone.
Godspeed Barry.

Yep. I think about Barry pretty much ever day. I'll stumble across an old photo, or pick up a new piece of gear that I know he'd like, or I'll be thinking about something we'd done together or how he'd react to some situation I'm dealing with or million other ways...He was a great friend who I shared a lot with and is sorely missed.

Me too. Every time I wash my daily coffee mug I see his name on the bottom (it was a gift).
Emblazoned with:
"We the willing led by the unknowing are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much for so long, with so little, we are now qualified to anything with nothing"
Did he know about the boutique business or what ?!?! :)

I've still got a message from him on my answerphone.......
I hate watching Antique Roadshow because he still pops up on it unexpectedly which gives me a bit of a turn.
I'm really glad I bought one of his guitars before he passed away. Like Leon I often think about what he would think about something.
Best, Pete.

Speaking of that, I recently by accident called his old # and it answered! His voice came on the outgoing message and it just freaked me out and I couldn't leave a message! I figured his phone had long been cut off and maybe I was hearing something I shouldn't have ya know. I certainly miss my good friend and always think of him around this time of year.

Really been thinking about Barry this week. NAMM is here and so many years he'd be roaring into town about now, with his fantastic enthusiasm and warm presence.
I miss the "conspiratorial wink" he'd give me when we played together. Lots of you know that look. ;) Nobody can replace Barry, he was one of a kind and one of the best!
