I can't think of an example of where this has been so for me. I tend to think that the music makes the band name cool by at large. A lot of great bands/artists have names that we wouldn't think were great if we didn't love the music.

True, but the music is unlistenable besides, no? So the names fit, right?

I do it sometimes. If a bands name is so clearly trying to be really dark or hardcore then I just laugh and move on.

Stuff like "Demonic _____" or "_____ of blood". Just completely turns me off even before listening to them.

Yes but even some technically competent/good metal bands have some wierd Emo names these days.

PS- never hang out with Gibby Haynes with a head full of mushrooms.

Two bands I almost passed up because of their names and have come to love: Pretty Maids and Pink Cream 69. Both excellent melodic rock.

No doubt about it...

Back when Pepsi had the codes for free itunes downloads I was going through itunes and checked out a band called The Fags thinking they would have to be a SoCal punk band or something.. Turns out they were a really good power pop band from the Detroit area and the singer guitarist used to post here. If I saw their CD in a store I would never had bought it.

Must admit, I found out what a 'Limp Bizkit' was before I heard their music, and I have never ever been remotely motivated to listen to any of their stuff since...They're probably a really bood band, but the name connotation just makes me gag and I have never sought out their catalogue...

It can bias me a little. If I hear and like the music first, before knowing the name, the name matters much less to me. But if I hear the name first and it blows...

Apropos that, I'm having a helluva time with my band. We have had a few goes at a name, and I'm the one not happy.

To me, there are a few things I "think" about band names when it comes to most bands, new bands...

- It often is best with one word names, but there are exceptions.

- It should be a name that is not "unique" in how it is spelled. CatZ
instead of Cats, just because you are going to spend a lot of time having to explain on the phone and elsewhere "it's with a Z at the end instead of an S". There are always exceptions.

- It should poetically, or somehow hint at your style. A blues band with the nam "indogo Punks" seems to be a bad way to go.

- On the other hand, make it TOO indicitive of the music and 1) you are stuck with that music, or 2) it just ends up being mediocre. Sorry if I tweak anyone here by saying a band called "Crossroads Blues Band" is a very cliche name...not original. Some folks might not think about it, etc, while others may think "hell...if they aren't even original in naming their band, how original will they be to hear live?"

- It can be a word or two with no real meaning, or a made up word.

- If it is some lame phrase, or concept...not so good either.

I think of bands I really like, and it is hard to tell if their names would have drawn me...I guess I'm saying, the bands that have made it big, their names have a different function than "working bands" that are just playing gigs, and scraping by. Seems to me anyway. They don't have to explain their name anymore, and everyone that knows the name knows what to expect.

Still at some point...they were "Led Zeppelin" (a kinda weird name...as in "it went over like a lead ballon"...but after time most say Led Zep), Beatles (clever play on Beat, and Beetles was reference to Buddy Holly and the Crickets), Rolling Stones (would not be cool by my "crossroads blues band" diss, but see...it worked for them!), always liked Uriah Heep as a band name.

ALso liked Govt Mule (cool name. I associate with some old blues about "give my my government mule" but they aren't a strictly blues band)

Disliked (the name, not nec. the band): Ten Years After, Mahivishnu orchestra, Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band

I'm sorry, there are way too many stupid band names out there. For a lot of them it's a way of saying the name doesn't matter, while proving it does at the same time...

Actually that's a cool Simpsons reference. I don't like their music, but their album titles, lyrics, etc. have always been pretty clever. Really the songs aren't bad either, it's the style I find grating: the nasal auto-tuned vocals, chunka-chunka guitars, and everything compressed until your head is about to explode.
