View Full Version : Post your Best Marshall tone!

Since there are many Marshall lovers out there, I thought it might be interesting to hear what members think is the ULTIMATE Marshall tone.
Post your example, preferably your own recording if you have one. I don't even care if it actually is a Marshall or not. The goal is to get an idea of what tone people associate with the ultimate Marshall tone. I understand there's a vast difference in an old school Plexi tone, compared to a modern high gain Marshall tone, but let's ignore that. Post the one tone that oozes that signature, Uber-Marshall tone YOU think is the best. Post all details about the gear too - guitar used, any effects, microphone, cabinet, etc.
This is of course All Subjective... so there are no rights or wrongs. Just different strokes for different folks.
I would love to hear your favorite Marshall tone!
Sad to say though, I don't even have a good Marshall tone recorded... :hide2
But I found this, which I think sounds pretty awesome (1987x modded by David Bray. Hellatone 30 and 60 speakers, not sure what guitar used here):

Paul Kossoff has my absolute favorite Marshall tone. It's that relatively clean, right on the brink, old school Les Paul straight into a cranked plexi thing, and a perfect example of what I'm talking about occurs when he floors it for the lead starting at 2:18 in this video:

not sure what they're talkin about there.

a 1987 NMV and a 2204 MV are both JMPs.

I think the best way to get "as good as" or "better than" the original, go with a Metropoulos amp.

I don't think it had any problems, I had a really good tech look it over and make sure that everything was fine and he gave it a clean bill of health. It was funny when he admitted to me that everyone in his shop was playing through it while it was in his possession...they all thought it was a really good one.

Interesting how different we think about the ultimate Marshall tone... which is totally cool. Some are into the high gain Marshall tone, others into clean, yet others into a bluesy, overdriven Marshall tone. Good thing Marshall does them all! :)
The thing I love about Marshall, is I can get all those sounds with one amp, one guitar, no pedals. Use the volume knob and you have all those sounds. If you're adventurous, use your tone knob and get even more sounds!

no need for a variac with the 50w since the voltage are already low
It was a joke Roe! I was making light of some of the things that Eddie says
got him that tone....none of which I believe. It is the same thing with Rev. Billy.
The Gods will never tell you how "they" got that sound. I would assume
most of them do not know, at some point the tone is in the hands of
the producer and the engineer.

Yeah that's the only footage I've seen where they let Holt stretch out on that tune. He did it on the ACL show too, but at Antone's reunion show they kept it short.
Holt is every bit as impressive as Grissom. I have a few boot's a friend sent me where HOlt's just KILLIN.
I believe he does use a Klon and the prerequiste (to texas slingers) chandler tube driver from time to time. But it's always that strat and a 72 Marshall.

Paul Kossoff has my absolute favorite Marshall tone. It's that relatively clean, right on the brink, old school Les Paul straight into a cranked plexi thing, and a perfect example of what I'm talking about occurs when he floors it for the lead starting at 2:18 in this video:

That sounds SO much better than the tones I've heard from Grissom lately. I love the man's playing, chops and style, but lately he's been going for this tone that's flubby on the bottom, instead of the nice tight, bright and warm Marshall "kerrang."
Seems people are coming back around to the simpler Marshall-esque amps?

I'd personally hesitate to use the phrase "best ever" and "Marshall tone" in the same sentence without referring to the guys who helped make Marshalls famous.
Be that as it may, consider this for a good example of Strat Marshall tone...

(could have pretty much picked anything from late-60s Blackmore or Hendrix, and later, Trower.)
..and for Gibson Marshall tone, it starts with Clapton on the "Beano" album and continues with any live Cream recording.. I just picked this one at random...

Man--that is some serious tone from Grissom right there, not to mention his playing. Love Holt's tone, too. Really great stuff!!!!
what kind of marshalls are grissom and holt using?

They're both using 72 50 waters Roe just not sure lead or bass.
I emailed grissom and asked but he just said they all sound different.
Both use pedals to some extent. Klon and holt also uses a tubedriver

Gorgeous clip beautiful changes bro
Thanks, much appreciated.
How did Jim Marshall get gain tones so right, so long ago....as far as we've come with amp designs I still don't think anything can touch a good old JMP.

This
Daaaaamn! That is bad ass! When he plays those three chords at 0:34 ... Doesn't get much more "punch you in the mouth" Marshall than that.
Thanks for that clip.
This and the Bray clip are my favorites, by far...

Assuming you've received the amp now, any chance can you give an update on your impressions of it?
Mark is a fantastic player and has the EVH phrasing down pat. I always wonder if his Mod5 comes close to those sounds when other folks are playing them.

the first 3 chords of ac/dc's jailbreak. i don't think it gets much better!
As previously posted.
Bad Cat Hot Cat 100R through Fane AXA12 and EVM12L
My friend John is playing his self built Limba chambered, semi hollow with
full through body maple neck and Fralin Split Blade HB's.
I brought the amp to this club jam specifically to recruit his help to break in the new Fane AXA12.

didnīt grissom use a ī71/ī72 (1987 lead) JMP50 and a metal panel 1992 Super Bass with different attenuators? i think i remember a gitarre&bass magazine with an interview... his tone nowadays isnīt my cup of tea... he should use the good ones again ;)
