when i saw sparklehorse linkous had 2 mikes on 1 stand, one normal sounding/ looking one and next to it a way smaller sort of hand held interview looking mic that was distorted/filtered. anyone have any experience on gear/signal path to use to get that distorted/filtered/cocked wah sort of sound live on vocals within a band set up?

Mark had a DS-1 on his live board. It was allegedly used with his second vocal mike...I believe it's also about the mic itself...I'm sure someone knowledgeable will chime in...
RIP Mark Linkous

a couple times i saw them he just had a cheap mic feeding the boss ds-1. not sure what model it was exactly but according to another thread he just used ones that came with old tape recorders in the studio to get the effect.

A Shure lavelier mic works great. Whatever cheapo guitar amp you have on hand will work too instead of the Boss pedal; mic the guitar amp.
One of Mark's studio tricks, after Tom Waits, was to tape a tiolet paper roll on the end of a Shure SM57.

Some people use a blues harp mic for distorted vocals. I'm not sure if this is how Linkous did it though.
What a loss...:(

I own these. They're phenomenal limited bandwidth mics.

ML found his favourite microphone in a landfill in Virginia. It was attached to a '40s tape recorder.

Just find cheap mics and mess around with effects. You'll find something you like.
