I finally got a sm57 the other day. I spent 3h last nite, trying to mic my 1x12 combo.
Jeez, what a bitch it is !! i knew that it wouldn't be easy...

However, i've settled on a position, trying to get an acceptable rock tone.So i recorded a short riff, i'd like to have opinions on the tone because i'm not 100% happy, don't know why. Lacks bass ? highs ? anything would be helpful.

i used an el cheapo mixer for mic preamp, recorded at low volume. Used a laptop with a crappy soundcard.

riff with SM57 off center (http://www.digitalsoundplanet.com/Members/000118073_000010926_proj.mp3)

Whaddya think ?

Thanks !

Not bad, but I think you'd be pleasantly surprised if you tried it again with less gain.

Depends on what you're going for,,,,

For a "bluesy-rock" sound, I think it sounds pretty good!

Obviously for modern rock or hard rock, it's a bit "unfocused" due to it's off-centered position.

Experimentation is the only way to go!!

Good luck!

You may be pleasantly surprised if you record a second identical take and pan one left and the other right. This will often fatten up a thin track. Try eq with mid scoop on one take and mid hump on another, etc., experiment.
