Click on the marshall drop down box and pick jtm45. The jtm45 clips and 1987 clips sound similar.

Roughly yes, but really not great clips.
Find the JTM45 cleans are nicer and the OD not as harsh as these.

I think that site's a great idea, but I don't think the clips of any of the amps I'm familiar with are very good representations.

I think a JTM45 with KT66's has the most distinctive tones in the Marshall family. Here's a clip of a 1966 JTM45 that I think shows off the signature tones:

NOTE: This is a clip that used to be on the BPJ Amp Pages:

Nice clip. What other gear was used? He used to have all of the documented on his site, but I don't have it written down. If my memory is right, I'm recalling a 1957 LP Jr. and a vintage 4x12 Marshall cab, but I can't swear to that.
BPJ is Bob Pavao. He recorded the Time Machine Boost clips here:
http://www.timemachineboost.com/sound.htm
I'll try to contact him and get the details.
He posted about 5 Marshall amp clips going from the 66 JTM45 up to a 1981 JCM 800. I've got all of them, and they're interesting to try to guess what amps go with which clip.
If I have time, I'll post a thread to let people guess.

That site goes to show how similar most amps really sound!

I agree. Check out the 2Rock clips, all of the ones thru an H30 sound VERY similar to me. I would like to hear them do clips of the same amp thru different speakers.
I do go check out the site every now and then though, so it can't be all that bad:)

I get the sense there's a little player bias going on there. If the player prefers a certain sound, he's going to try his best to set the amp up to sound that way. Seems like that's what's going on.

I can agree with this as well. I end up sounding like me thru about everything I play thru.
