My own Four Loko experience was by accident...several couples were hanging out at a friend's house and my buddy and I made a wine run for the girls...we were in the liquor store and both looked at each other (end of the week, Friday) and said "I need a Red Bull"...we asked the clerk if they had any and the guy goes "No, but we just got in these awesome new energy drinks...check them out, Four Loko...malt liquor and energy drink combined..."

What the hell...so we bought one each and went back to the gathering...we both started drinking them and immediately went "These suck..." but both of us being guys, neither one of us would give up drinking them...i.e. "Are you going to quit? P$$$y..."

Long story short, after drinking the Four Loko, I proceeded to make a lot of inappropriate comments about other people's wives, I felt up my wife in public, was generally obnoxious (my wife said...others said I was hilarious), got punched in the stomach by my wife, threw up then passed out in the middle of the floor...

I have a pretty high tolerance and am no lightweight, but that thing knocked me on my ass...I can't imagine high school or college kids slamming them...

That reminds me of a story my friend told me.
His company was doing a Colt 45 sponsored party. The magazine he worked at was a hipster art mag so all these hipsters showed up and started drinking the Colt 45 open bar. They drank it like cans of PBR. Not used to drinking malt liquor, an hour and a half later there we guys and girls puking and passing out all over the place. I thought it was hilarious, the club's staff not so much.

There's been a ton of false reports about the drink made locally around my neck of the woods, one of which I've proven wrong.

1. One local Boston area news station said that one can of 4L has the effect of 18 light beers........no.

Facts: One can of 4L has 12.5% ABV. One can of Budweiser has 5% ABV. One can of Bud Light has 4.2% ABV. That would mean that one can of 4L is equal to 2.5 cans of Budweiser and just under 3 cans of Bud Light.

Size is part of the problem. The combination with caffeine supposedly masks the feeling of being drunk, and makes it easier to down a can of this stuff than it would be to consume 6 cans of normal brew.

According to my kids at college, drinking 2 cans in a row is (was) common practice.

Its also very cheap. Like 4 bucks a can I believe. You can also drink it quickly so its like getting a six pack down in a few minutes or 10 minutes and drinking numerous cups of coffee too. That would trash anyone who isnt a heavy drinker and I think it would toss even some heavy drinkers for a loop. Its incredibly popular with high school kids.

My freshman year in college (2 years ago) I had just met some good friends who have since become BFFFL, one of which was a girl who drank all of my guys friends liquor for free. As the year went on we tried to avoid her when buying/drinking alcohol; she caught on and started trying harder to mooch. So one night we are about to go for an alcohol run and we almost sneek by her "get me a couple 40oz" she says (without any money to give). We are like "OK" /s. So we go to the liquor store and get her a pink Four Loko.

The whole night we tried to convince her how good it was
"Can i get a drink of that stuff, its soooo good,"
"no Way!"

About halfway through the night she stops feelings so hot,
"you guys knew this shit was nasty, huh?"

The irony is that this year ,since the FDA decision, Four Loko is all of my friends favorite party drink.

I've had a few Lokos, not really my thing, but not terrible. All the recent hype and Prohibition-esque concern has led all of my local stores to stop selling them. The only risk of these, in my eyes, is that they are in a 24 ounce can. For anyone to slam one down, it will give you a buzz.

As for all this banning, I get almost the same buzz drinking a pint of Vodka/Redbull. How long until Red Bull is by prescription only?
