View Full Version : How does everyone use delay in their rig?

I am betting this makes a hug impact on what type of delay you use?

I am finding I prefer analog delay for leads because of the warmth, but prefer digital because of the accuracy for rhyhtm and clean. Closest I have found to best of both worlds is the T-Rex Replica.

With clean passages or songs where we go for an almost acoustic quality, a very clear delay seems to work best. Then again...hw does the edge of U2 do it? Digital? Rack?

I prefer analog for the most part. Have you used a tape delay?? They sound fantastic as well, I'm looking to pick one up soon.
I'm currently using:
analogman AR20DL for a little presence during solos,
Strymon El Capistan for warbly tape delays,
and I'm getting a providence chrono dly-4 for digital with a dry analog path! It also has a filter on the delay to round off the digital hardness if need be. This one obviously is for when I need clear and pronounced rhythmic delay.

I find I don't really need delay, so I took it out.

I used to have 2 DD-7s... but recently i bought a TC Electronics Nova Delay, it does a much better job in my opinion and has the versatility you mention...

I'm not sure about the Edge, but I think originally he used an EHX Memory Man... if you watch the DVD "It Might Get Loud" he pulls one of these out and talks about how he learned to play with delay. I think anymore he uses TC rack mounts for his delay, but don't quote me on that....

I would agree the way you use them massively influences your choice, or at least it should.

The long delay times and soupy oscllation of tape are important to me,i use them to create harmonizing leads and in a generally ambient psychedelic way,so I use my ep3 or el cap depending on the gig

Also just a huge fan of the DMM, I use it for a shorter heavily modulated delay sounds to create space on rhythm, similar to a really long verb, and just general chaos on leads

If I dial in the two I am using at the time correcty I get awesome rhythmic style repeats

I don't really need crystal clear repeats or tap, although the el cap has it, so a true digital dd2 style delay has never particularly appealed to me as the type of music I play doesnt necessitate it.

Anyway I am happy.

I use delay mainly for parts. Never really to add 'air' to leads or anything like that. Honestly I find delay washes those parts out.

If there's a delay used, it's usually for either:
1) U2-esque dotted 8th delay parts
2) multi-tape volume swells for either single note lines or chords (think allan holdsworth)
3) 8th/qrtr note delay parts. Again delay is integral to the part itself (think Incubus)

Other than that, my tone or sound is usually pretty dry. Including leads. I get the sustain from technique or having the amp slightly feeding back. Rather than getting washed out with delay.

Lately, i've been using my DMM for slap back with lots of repeats no mod. And El cap for everything else.

I use delay mostly rhythmically or for ambience. Rarely i used it gilmour style for solos but thats very rarely.

I use it as a very subtle echo effect, almost like a reverb. Currently happy with my Subdecay Echobox.

Most used Egde delays are the Korg SDD-3000, AMS delay and the tc 2290

I use delay for 2 things:

1. Dotted 8th U2 style rhythm parts
2. Fattening up lead lines

Right now I am using a Boss DD7 (analog setting for lead) and regular digital setting for dotted 8th. I am looking for a better delay for my lead lines. I am thinking that a wampler faux analog echo is what I need for lead stuff. Then I would just keep the Boss for the dotted 8ths. Would be nice to find 1 pedal that could do both to my satisfaction.

I have a RE20 Boss SpaceEcho second from the end of the line and a DD7 at the very end. Usually use them the DD7 as the slapback an the RE20 as the crazy textural sounds.

Using the Wampler Analog Echo set for slapback and a DL8 set on lo-fi setting for longer delay.

I have two delays... both are digital. My Nova Repeater is my "U2" like delay with dotted 1/8th notes division. I also use a DD7 for shorter Gilmour "stadium" like delay on solos. I like the cleaner digital delay sounds... I tried a CC and just didn't like the tone I was getting from it. sorry.

never u2. never ever ****ing u2.

hahahah just messing, that's not really my style.

most of the time its just a little bit of slapback. occasionally a little bit of 300 ms-ish delay for a piano-sustain effect on solos.

Well, my Pigtronix Echolution is set for the U2ish stuff.

My El Capistan is set for long delays.

My Deluxe Memory Boy is for tap tempo and short work.

The JamMan Delay is for slap echo.

I just use it as a slight echo.....mainly for leads. Just got a MXR Carbon Copy.

i dont turn my dm2 off.
its more a tone machine/verb-ish echo.
gives a wonderful mojo off.

except i now need an echo to do some delaying.

I have a DD-3 going into a SMMH. I use the DD-3 for short delay to fatten up the sound just a little for a few songs, and slightly longer delays for some solos. The SMMH I use for more ambient delay stuff, and for a simulated chorus sound since I didn't have enough space on my board for a chorus pedal. I also use both delays running into each other for some pretty cool sounds. The SMMH can just get effing crazy. What a fun pedal.

i just sold my DD-20 to get a Strymon Brigadier because i found i really only used one setting on the Boss, which was a warm yet still rather clear repeat tone (Tape mode with tone rolled back). this was pretty similar to the core tone of the DMM or even the classic tape tone to my ear. this is why i like the Brig because a quick twist of the Bucket Loss knob goes from murky analog to clear & DMM-ish. add a bit Modulation and you're squarely in Edge land. so far i love it.

and if you also get the Favorites switch you can effectively have two presets if you don't want to bend down and twist knobs.

i'm sure some of those great multi delay units out there do just as good a job, some probably better, but none with such a small box & simple layout.
