Well it finally happened. We've know it was coming for a long time. The Padres traded 1st baseman Adrian Gonzalez to the Boston Redsox for 3 minor leaguers plus another player to be announced later. I hate to see him go but if he had to go somewhere I am glad it is Boston. I think he will really prosper there. I wish him good luck!

See ya, Mr. Beltre... w/ Youk now moving to third, I'd be shocked if he'll be back w/ the Sox.

Beltre won't be back because the Sox are oing to sign an outfielder, most likely Jayson Werth. I wouldn't entirely rule out Carl Crawford yet.

Is the deal finalized? It seems like the Sox have been trying to make this happen for a couple of years. Didn't the talk last year feature Elsbury or Bucholz going to the Padres? Glad to hear it may have finally happened.
I'll take another outfielder, but I'd still like to find a catcher who can hit and/or throw out base runners.

I hear you on finding another catcher, however it is the bullpen that really needs some attention because with the exception of Bard it was horrible in 2010.

This changes everything with their bats. It will be interesting to see the order. They have to put him 3 or 5. That shuffles the deck very much

i'm pretty sure their priority is crawford, but if they get werth, i won't cry. i kinda thought gonzalez was a year away, but i guess they couldn't find a first or third baseman for a year contract. i'm very excited. now let's get rid of dice k and get a bullpen.

Dice K has more good games than bad games in Boston.

Man, I love the off season in Beantown.

Dice K has great stuff, but spends too much time nibbling at the strike zone instead of attacking it. He doesn't go deep into games because throws too many pitches and gives up too many walks.

This was win-win for both teams. The Sox have wanted AGon for years and SD wasn't going to be able to resign him for 2012. There is more leverage now than there would be at the All Star break, so it was time. And the 3 minor leaguers are going to be very good. Casey Kelly is in the top 10 prospects in baseball. Rizzo has skills similar to Gonzalez, and Fuentes has skills similar to Ellsbury.
The Sox gutted their bullpen, so that is a priority. A catcher would be nice, although they seem to think Saltalamachia will benefit a lot from Varitek. My guess is that if they sign Werth or Crawford, it's to make Ellsbury available as trade bait for those needs. Ryan Kalish proved last year that he can play in the big leagues and Ellsbury proved that he may not be as durable as the team would like him to be. Beltre prefers the west coast, so he was likely using Boston to drive up the price a little the way Texiera did before he signed with the Yankees

They knew that was his style when they signed him. Remember that he used to throw 150 pitch complete games in Japan on 6 days rest. We all remember what happened to him when they tried to change his style.

This was win-win for both teams.
First, I disagree that this is a win for the Pads. The package of prospects they were getting back for Gonzalez was underwhelming.
Second, it doesn't matter. As of now, the deal is off. The BoSox weren't able to negotiate a contract extension with Gonzalez and they pulled out, according to Jon Heyman.

Maybe my post was premature.
I think the days of a small market club (2nd smallest payroll in baseball) having a franchise player like Tony Gwynn are gone.

Crawford is left-handed. Werth is right-handed. If the Sox get Crawford, they will be "unbalanced" w/ more LH players than RE.
Just sayin' :)

Whoops!!! Gonzalez deal slipped by the 2:00pm deadline for contract extension. Deal is off.

from mlbtr:
the red sox are a kid at walmart who has been eyeing a PS3 for 2 years. They finally go in and pick one out.
"alright sir that'll be $299."
"oh shit, would you take $200?"
........
"ehhh i guess i don't need a ps3"

The deal is done according to SI writer Jon Heyman. Press conference tomorrow. I hope Boston gave A-Gon what he wanted. He is going to be the cornerstone of the franchise for the next 7+ years.

Great deal for the Sox...and a good deal for the SF Giants....one less team to contend with. Sox are going to be loaded if they can stay healthy.

According to Heyman's original article, the Padres specifically wanted NO major league ready talent, just prospects, which I found to be a little baffling, but maybe financial constraints meant they couldn't take on additional salary. So with that in mind, I figured since the Padres got a package of highly regarded prospects (i.e. got what they wanted) that this was a win-win. Of course if the Padres waited a year and the Sox signed him as a free agent, they would have gotten draft picks only, and that would be even more underwhelming than this package.

How's their pitching staff? The Padres had no bats except for Adrian and we dominated our division right up until it where it counted because of the incredible pitching staff.

What you said. What ever happened the mythilogical gyro ball?

Everybody conceded something then. He wanted 8 years, 180 mill. The Sox wanted 6 years, 160 mill. Right down the middle for the win :)

Adrian will bat .300+ and hit 40 HRs easy in Fenway. I'm bummed he's gone because he was a local. I realize it's goofy, but I've always wanted to see an "All San Diego" Padres team featuring guys like Gonzalez, Adam Jones and Stephen Strasburg.
It seems like we're always staying in limbo with that idea though. We shipped out AGon and pick up Aaron Harang, another San Diegan.
