I've read so much about Tomo Fujita, I wanted to buy his DVD, but can't find it! The Berklee Site doesn't have it, Hal Leonard site doesn't have it, so I'm stumped. It seems everyone has the VHS version, but of course, I don't own a VCR.

I ordered it once, and the order was cancelled (without telling me!).

Anyone know where I can get it?

thanks

Hey Mark,

I just ordered this through my local music store. It was back-ordered, but still only took about three weeks.

Hi,

I just bought a new copy on ebay. $14 plus shipping! I hope this is a great video, it's about time I spent some money on my playing rather than my gear.

Funny how my equipment always sounds better when my playing is "on."

Hi Woodyworld,

Thank you so much for writing. That's awful nice thing to
say! I really appreciate it. My AYGP dvd is my passion of
teaching. Each section has some simple examples and
some challenging exercises too. Which exercise did you like?

My AYGP 2 dvd will be released soon.

Hey Tomo,

My name is Dan Wilson, I'm a guitar player out of Akron, Ohio and I've been hearing a lot about your guitar playing. I was wondering if you are up at Berklee because I will be up there on the 15th for that summer program. Some clips of my playing are posted on Jack Zucker's website at sheetsofsound.net/danwilson. Where can I find some previews of your playing?

hey Tomo just got your DVD and I really am happy with it....it quickly showed me how bad my timing has gotten over time and how bad my picking has gotten since with both of these i practiced but never to a point of a foundation...but now im really pumped about learning these things as a core....i figured out for at least myself that most of my frustration in my playing is due to the lack of foundation of these things...and im just on example 3...and will be there for a couple more days...its strange but so common how i can know a vast amount of know how on the guitar and yet my timing and picking are so bad....thanks again Tomo and i hope this thread continues to stay near the top for all new memebers to this forum so they can hear about your DVDs.

by the way....do you not get money from buying from Amazon.com? your reply to the other post seemed to say that you dont....if thats the case then i am sorry i bought mine from Amazon....because you are deserving teacher.

It's easy to just learn shapes and patterns. but when you
actually put all these together in music. If you don't have
good foundation, you can't deliver all good.

I am glad that you understood those important points.

Thank you so much for your positive supports.

Sorry I confused you about this. I get good % from every copies
from anywhere. Definitely your purchase counted. Sales
are very steady U.S and Japan. I have more dvds in Japan.
It's very very steady. I can smile!

Here is some solo on "Just Funky" live cds.

Do you have a web page where I can get a better idea of the contents of your DVD?

Also, in your context, does accellerate mean learn faster, or play faster, or both :)

Thanks,

Do you practice Ex13, Ex19?
I recommend more chords, groove type ideas
besides scale type exs.

Great to hear your comping improved. I am very
happy. I usually work on my comping like
EX13 and develope to another levels, tunes, tempo.
I never practice single notes before I do my groove.

Please careful with crazy chromatices. I do more
simple chromatices.

Thanks,

my question is. is it good for me? since im a totall beginner.

will it have exercises for playing normal songs. not blues?

i have trouble picking the right string w/out lookin lol.

I think it can be good for a total beginner, but maybe not exactly the best choice.

I am primarily a blues player, but starting on some jazz. The content is not style specific; it helps you learn the GUITAR. That is helpful for ANY style.

I would wait a few days for Tomo to reply. He will have other things to add, I am sure.

Guitar playing is fun, but it's important to have good
foundation on both hands.

Answer is YES. Just do what you can do comfortably.
Skip EX4-7 Do 1-3. Part2 you can learn your fretboard
harmony anf Ear training. Those are great for any styles.

Part 3 Rhythms, muting. Do EX13 top EX15... very slow.

Part 4 Blues changes & one chord groove.
You can work on Rt 3 7 groove. This will give you
solid muting technique and blues changes.

Good luck.
Work hard and slowly.

I have book "Instant Guitar" this book is for
someone who just got guitar and only can open
guitar case. It's fun with Karaoke cd.

If you buy fender strat (cheap)set , this book
comes with the guitar. (in U.K.)

Hi Mark,

Thank you for helping me.

My AYGP DVD included so many exs for any styles.
As long as you use these exs with your comfortable
pace. That's good.

Rt 3rd 7th form to apply into jazz standard is
cool way to enjoy your playing.

Thanks,

PS, Check out my Clinic dvd (soon). You can learn
about how to apply simple triad ideas into song.

Just received my copy of AYGP~! Briefly skim through the whole vid once and really pumped up about practicing all the stuffs. Started on Ex 1 to 3, reworking my alternate picking and fretting technique (realised i used to fret quite hard). It's really helpful, but i have 2 questions for you guys here who can help me out.

1. I'm trying to get used to fretting lightly in those exercises, but if im doing legato stuffs? should i hammer on and pulloff harder on the higher registers? Because i think it was practicing my legato that i ended up fretting quite hard, so need some advice in this area.

2. Roughly what speed you guys work up to for those chromatic stuffs, before progressing to the rest of the stuffs competently?

Btw, Tomo i just love your comping and chops. It's struck me like a love bug and now i'm in love with all that groovy comping. Realised that i've always tackled scales and chords just like how you said, learning about digits and not learning about the degrees and colours.

Thank you for your post.

Please do carefully and slowly on Ex1-3. Very slow!
Don't go to crazy chromatics. I am glad to hear that
my AYGP dvd is helping you. The key is how soft you
press the frets by your left hand. And how soft you can
pick the strings by your right hand.

These are my advice to students.

1) Practice with amp all the time.

2) Set your amp brighter, no reverb.

3) If you have a Start, play with your rear pick up only(at least a week)

4) Play music no just up & down on the neck.

5) If you don't have specific direction, put your guitar down.

If you want to extra fast result :Shut off your phone & TV.

Thank you so much for your comment on my comping.
Groove and comping, yes it's fun stuff. I am not interested in
scales that much. I know them. But I love playing melody more..
Playing around the tune is very important too.

Good Luck and I wish you enjoy more...

Thank you.

Well, you can't play totally different right away.
But you can improve your playing by slowly and
steady.

If you get lost like that..... That 's how much you can actually
play. (I would like to tell you straight, hope you don't mind)

So start with play something without your eyes on your fretboard.
This means you need to play more slow and simple.

Look up and play.

Good luck!

You're welcome. I wish everybody enjoy playing
guitar.

Rear pick up means yes bridge pick up.

First set your amp clean,
Treble 6-7
Middle 4-5
Bass 3-4

This way you'll get more even tone from your amp.
If you set too fat, this means sometime too muddy.
You could not notice your picking technique.

I practice my Strat's rear pickup for 1-2 weeks.
Then if I switch to my front pickup, it' s almost
too warm. This way (rear pickup), you can improve
your touch response of your left hand(pressure , noises)
and your picking control.

Did you like that video clip? Thank you so much!
That was a part of my clinicin Florida.

By the way, my Tone Merchants clinic dvd will be
ready for sale very soon. 4 demo performance
and 20 lessons in 2 hours.

Great to hear that you got AYGP dvd.

1st section. You can see each fingerings over regular
notations. So if you look closely, you will understand it.
No Problem. Even crazy chromatic... see next page, you
see tabs. Watch dvd once and check your fingerings and
circled numbers(strings). You don't have to read regular
notation at all. So don't worry.

Please watch the DVD, then you only practice a few
exercises like Ex1 to Ex3. Practice slow than the booklet
suggested .... review and review.

Ex9 to Ex11.... Ex13 to 15.... Ex 19 Rt 3rd 7th groove..

Set your Metronome around 40 - 60.
Your metronome click on 2 & 4. This way,
One Two Three Four...
Click Click.

Think a snare drums on beat 2 & 4?

It takes some time to get this.
Good luck!

Great. Will the dvd be available from your site? I'm progressing pretty well everyday, I'm now currently at Ex.6 which i'm doing at 40bpm. For Ex.1 to 5 I'm playing at 55bpm as recommended in the booklet. Been practicing for 2 hours a day after i get home from school, Is it better if i could up the metronome for Ex. 1 - 5? or more beneficial if i complete Section 1 at the recommended metronome speed and go on to Ear Training?

Thanks. Yes, the Tone Merchants dvd will be available.
If you are interested in please email me at
music@tomofujita.com. I will follow the details.

About tempo setting. I will look for both hands timing and
quality. Slow is better at first.

If you have 2 hours to practice. You can do many things.
I can't teach you here. But I would like to point out a few
things.

You need a TAPE RECORDER in order to improve.
If you can't review your playing, you could go circle
same place. I would suggest to record all your playing.

You can go any sections. You don't have to finish entire
first section before you go to 2, 3, 4 section. Each section
you can find easy one to advanced one. Please go ahead
to go on section 2 Ear Training and fretboard.

Go to section 3, some rhythm...

Please go to Part 4. Ex19. Do practice it without a metronome
and play really slow. Strum your right hand wide open.
Please strum wide so that you will hear all noises, then
use your left hand to mute those unwanted noises.

Once you can practice Ex 19.
Practice with your metronome around 42 -52 (2&4)
Record your groove (4-6 chorus)

Then work on your melody or any solo over Ex19.

Then you are going to play your melody or solo over
Bb blues. Record your solo with a metronome.

Now you hear your solo from your tape recorder.
Play your Ex19 to comp your solo?

This way you won't waste any time. Everything you play
will review ... Just a thought.

I practice my acoustic or jazz box most of my time.

Even playing acoustic.... You really have to watch out
how relax you play both left and right hand.

Please use your dynamics and watch out your
muting technique.

Could you explain more around your question please?

If you practice your acoustic really loud(playing really loud
and play hard), that's not so good. All depends how you
practice, how you do. Plus, change your guitar strings
more often. Dead strings are no so good to feel your tone
,touch, dynamics.

I have to go back to my tape lessons.

You're welcome.

I guess I misunderstood your original question.

Ex 1~.... those are click on per every beat.
So do set your metronome on every beat. (40)

Yes, Ex1 ~ Ex3. But each person can take this idea
into something else like I reach each person certain way.

You definitely should learn tunes. Of course.
You can organize your time with your instinct.

I don't never use gripmaster. Play soft, less move(your left hand)
... Personally, I am not interested in using gripmaster.

Practice ,practice and practice!

Why quit? Why not practice more instead of practicing a little bit?

Is there anything in particular you need help with? Music is a lot of fun, but it does take some work for some of us. The more you put into it the more you'll get out of it :)

No no. I couldn't play at all first year. But I kept listening
record that I liked.(Deep Purple). Then somebody taught me
a few chords... other guy taught me a simple chromatice
ex. Then I practiced it with very slow tempo.

But I learned a lot of stuff from many records.
You don't have to practice.... but if you learn music that
you love... that makes you play? "Inspiration"

Don't worry about your progress. Please just enjoy
music. Play with what you got.

Could you explain about more in details?
you just can't do what?

Any levels, we feel that.... Do something else?
Just listen to cds? Sometime.... I don't touch
my guitar for a while. I may listen to records or do
something else so that I will save some music/inspiration
inside me. Then I grab my guitar and play that.

well practicing w/ a met. is out of the question. i just can't do it.. i can do ex's 1-3b, can't do other ex's.. i do 1-3b but still some strings when i pick them they dont ring.. so hard to leave my pinky finger close to the strings.. they flare all the way out for some reason. like im holding a tiny t-cup

i went to my parents house eariler.. played the e-guitar i left there.. my dad was there so i played what i knew.. he's all

ur a monkey (stupid) u've been playing so and so long and u still havent gotten anywhere.. (he plays also and doesnt teach me) he's all do "do-ra-mi-fa-so-la" for me.. and i was like i dont know it :( i teach myself so how can i know it.

now that makes me want to learn sooo bad. and show him i can do it...

i practice about 30-1hr each and everyday. just doing warmups & ur ex's and try to play couple songs. i love guitar i want to express myself through it but :(

I think you are trying to do too fast ?

If you can't play with a metronome, then you need to do something
more before you can do with a metronome.

Like you said about your pinky finger... Your left fingers move a lot.

So why don't you forget about a metronome for a while.
You can practice with chromatic EX1 & EX2 (not EX3)

Practice way was slow and not to move so much(your fingers)
Your fingerings & picking... you could spend more?
Don't worry about using a metronome.

If you have good direction, good attitude, a lot of patient,
huge efforts can make anything possible.(That's what I believe)

Besides practicing these technique. Do you copy tunes by your ear?
Figure out chords? Bass(Roots), melody? Some blues solo?

Do you listen to any blues? Listen to these.

B.B. King "Blues is King" "Live at the Regal"

What do you listen to? List 5 your favorite records,
tunes, artists?

Take care,

Tomo

No but about it. You are on the right track.
Listen to Tomo.

Some thoughts:

Slow down.

Learn one thing. Make it your own. Use it to express yourself.
It's like, what are you going to have for dinner? You can't have steak&chicken&tacos&spagetti&sushi&a hamburger&veggiesub.
Pick something and savor it. Like exercise 3, maybe.

Record yourself on a crummy tape player. Listen with open ears. "That worked" "That didn't work"
Keep practicing.
Keep recording and listening
"Hey - that sounds cleaner and better!"

After you practice, maybe late at night, go into a room with your guitar all alone, make it dark, the house very, very quiet. Hold the guitar. Play a note. Listen to it. Feel it. Play another note. Play some things using only 2 notes. Make it whisper. Make it talk. Make it scream. Make it whisper again. Listen.

If you go back and forth between careful, focused study, and relaxed completely free self-expression, and keep that up for maybe, say, the rest of your life, you know what you'll get?
A life that included a lot of enjoyment through guitar playing.

Here's a question for Tomo, or anyone else who may know. What level player is this DVD intended for? Is it an advanced? Beginner? Intermediate? Or all players?

Also can someone tell me what exactly get's covered in it? I already have some Troy Stetina Books, including Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar which has a lot of exercises in it. So I did'nt want to get something similar that might be too much like my others. I'm really hoping it's nothing like what I have so I can get it. :)

Those of you who have it, have you been progressing a steady amount?

I have been using it for a few months now. I consider myself an intermediate level guitarist, so I started a little after the beginning; some exercises I was able to do without preparation.

What I like about it is how it focuses you on fundamentals. RIight now, I'm working on my fourth exercise on comping. I was (am!) pretty crappy at moving from chord to chord.

This has fingering work to get your left hand right hand coordination down, comping, sight reading work, chord progressions and rythm. I'm sure it has other stuff too, but I haven't gotten that far.

Yeah, to me it's like "Fundamentals for the Intermedediate Guitarist", so it works and is helpful for a wide range of guitarists. For those on the less experienced end of the spectrum, it's a good foundation. For those of us who have been flailing away for a while now, it's a great tool for helping to clean up and fix our playing, and fill in those gaps and abysses in our knowledge that relate to stuff like time, funkiness, muting, etc. You know, all the stuff I didn't care about learning cause I was busy trying to figure out how to play faster.

So my AYGP made "good home"

I am very happy to hear that you are helping yourself
right. Guitar is a very interesting instrument that
it seems fast to be able learn, but once you reach your
first step, there first wall is waiting for you.

I can teach my mon how to play Bb13 chord, but
she can't play well with good tone. Because she
doesn't have good foundation/skills but how to play
shapes. She can't play E9... (smile)

Part1, Part2, Part3, Part4... each section you can find
easy exs to more advanced exs. So please do anything
that you are interested in and do everything very slow.
Slower than it suggested in my booklet.

I am glad that you understood the value of these
ideas. Now you can apply these to your own way.
I am sure you can come up things I can't even
imagine.

Hi, Tomo

Couldn't believe u are here in this forum.

I bought your dvd about four months ago.

Had been working at the basic exercises.

In fact, i just watched your dvd a while ago and was going through the ear training part. I was just wondering whether it there any other way to train those ears besides slowly going through those exercise? Any suggestions?

BTW, you dvd is one of the best instructionl dvds ever. As I'm going through all the exercises and i can see myself improving slowly.

Do tell us when your new dvd would be out.

I have to get my hands on it.

Also, thanks for all the post on this forum too. I personally found it useful reading the advice you give to help people improve their playing.

Your dvd rocks!

Hello Tom,

Sorry for my late reply. My life is really busy lately.
I used to do more extra work... my 3 children needs
so much of my time.

I always enjoy reading your comments in general.
You have such great musical taste and many great
suggestions on playing. I am big fan of yours.

Thank you so much for your time to write your
suggestion.

I loved the way your explain these topics with
great analogy! Same way... When I teach..
I always talk about food, because we all know about
it. About practicing... it should have clear direction
,pace, review.. not about quantity...

My favorite tape recorder is panasonic RX-FS430.
I have 3. I use this taperecorder for my correspondence
lessons & personal practicing... If I didn't have this recorder
,I may think I sound good already? My tape recorder is
very honest!!! I can hear my left hand pressure(pitch)

It's funny that you have same experience... practicing
loud (in order to play soft) late night. That's how I fix
my touch. Set my Champ 12 , kind of bright, loud (if you
play normal or hard), then try to play very soft.

Thank you so much for your time.

It's really fun to play guitar. I always I find something new.

Is that AYGP DVD lesson really that funky? I've never gotten into that stuff before. But after hearing those clips it sounds very groovy.

Maybe now that I'm a little older, I just appreciate that feel more.
When I try to do that funky type of strumming I end up going naked and just use my fingers without a pick. I assume that would become a problem for me if I wanted to solo?

The only reason I go without a pick is the sound kind of reminds me of a rageado technique. I started out with flamenco but quickly moved on to the blues.

Cool stuff Tomo!

Tomo like's funk and some of the stuff on the DVD is "funky" but it is not a learn how to play funk DVD. It touches on many important topics and there is something in there for all levels and styles. Others have said that it is a fundamentals program for intermediates. That is true but the nice thing is that it is also within the reach of the beginner who knows basic chords. The bar may be a little high...but that's probably where it should be. With the DVD, everything is captured on video and you can keep going back over sections until you have have it down.

I am thinking that AYGP would be a great way to start out and wish that there was something like that available when I picked up the guitar. Definately worth the price of admission.

Hi KHK,

Thank you so much for your answer. Exactly what you said..
I love funk playing... but for learning and improving...
It's more important to tweak on good foundation. This will
do open up many direction and possibilities.

I have many students who want to play funk style at
Berklee. I don't just teach those 9th chord... I need to
know how each student handle their instrument...
left hand mute, left hand pressure, thumb position
, strumming point, everything...

Once you have a good fundamentals and control
... it's possible to improve your funk playing.
Even in order to play fast and accurate... I would
go 2-3 steps back... slow down is key.

Thank you so much for your help.

PS, I highly recommend to use my Tone Merchants clinic dvd
together. You can see how to apply ideas from my AYGP there.

Hi Mark,

How are you doing? Sorry about my super delay.
Thanks for answering the question.

Guitar playing, learning... very visual way approach(many of us)
and people pay too much attention on left hand shapes and
most of us want to play fast(without noticing it) ...
It's really easy to have bad habits(like move a lot your left finger
or hit hard on right hand picking... both timing is off...)
So I created some chromatic exercises for people who
need to have good habit. This way your playing ability will
be effortless and more freedom. That's why my AYGP
contains "Chromatic exercises/fingering and picking" instead
Major scale or Pentatonic scale... I want guitar player to practice
as piano player practice their white keys.(right next each others)
I practiced piano methods too... but Chromatic exercises (for me)
are similar to piano major scale exercises in order to have good
form.

These are not just for beginners, but also advanced players too.
More you go up, you need more strong foundation so you can
more further....

Just like same as anything... if you have strong foundation...
whatever you do... business , relationship.,.. last longer.

I am not looking for quick fix... The things that last longer
and happier..... because you made your efforts.

PS, now you got my Tone Merchants DVD. Hope you like
it.

I've really been enjoying the first section of this DVD lately. Haven't gotten past the chromatic exercises yet, but I sit down with them for about an hour at night, and they're just totally entertaining. I've been playing for over 25 years, had at least five different teachers, but this is the most fun I've ever had with lessons, and I'm not even to the good stuff yet. The crazy chromatics are just a blast; I run them backwards and forwards just for fun. It really makes you think about what every finger's doing, and where you're going with every note. I'll definitely be working these lessons for a long time. I just got to the octave/fifth interval exercises, and they're giving me fits. :D

:dude

Izy,

Thanks for stopping by here. Thanks for purchasing
my AYGP dvd. How's everything? Basic exercises are
sounds simple, but actually it really deep and very very
helpful for other parts(styles too).

Thanks for mentioning Part 2's Ear training part.
Singing Do Re Mi... Working on triads, 4 part harmony,
You will see more of those on my AYGP 2(very soon)
I would say... sight-reading rhythms... really really good!
All my students will get better ... their time skill, transcribing
skills....

Thank you so much for your comment. I just wanted to make
really helpful instructional product like a Modern Method guitar
(by Bill)...

Well, some reason Accelerate series... Sax version just came
out first. Then my AYGP2, AY drumming 2, AY Bass P 2,
Acoustic guitar, Rock guitar... are ready to be released by
HL. Thanks for waiting!

You're very welcome. It's my pleasure. I appreciate everyone
for writiting ,reading this thread. Sorry for my English... I have
been working in (thinking) Japanese all day.

Thanks,

Well my AYGP DVD 2 & 3 are already out in Japan. even DVD4!
but I had to do translate everything(a lot of work). Finally I did it
(other instruments too!!!) I always work split screen (Japanese on
left and English on right side)...

I made 7 sections for this dvd.

1) Section 1 scales.
5 in posisions, 7 broken positions, 1 string, 2 strings,
sequencings... many possible ideas and organization.

2) Part 2 Classical etudes.
Great song choices. Please wait till you see...

3) Part 3 Ear Training.
You can see on screen. It's fun stuff... Ear Training for
soloing.

4) Part 4 Sight-reading.
Again, you can see everything on screen.
Everyone's favorite. Here you can play really loud!
but no improvisation please!

5) Part 5 Blues etudes.
Simple call & Response, bending & vibrato,
Mixo blues, much more!

6) Part 6 Jazz Etudes.
Bb Jazz blues... minor blues, bebop chnages.

7) Part 7 Walking Bassline & comping.
I7 IV7.... ii-7 v7... Jazz blues, standard changes.
I use this for class... simple to complex ...if you
follow this you sound like me.

I think I gave you packet of Part6 & 7 when you purchased
my TMC DVD & SP DVD.

Thanks for asking.

I go back to work.

Tomo,

After a year of getting bogged down with building effects I have finally decided to concentrate on practicing and becoming a better player. I received AYGP as a "requested" gift and I am slowly getting used to using a metronome and retraining myself to go through the initial exercises.

I was just curious if you have any electronic copies of the accompanying booklet that goes with your DVD? The book does a great job of explaining the exact notes you play in the DVD but, an e-copy would be extremely convenient since I use my PC to play the DVD and I also use a software-based metronome.

Good question!

Actually I suggest to stay or go slower in order to play faster and
clear.

1) Set your metronome at 40 (every beat)
or slowere tempo without a metronome

2) Set your metronome at 40 (half note, 2&4)
or slower tempo without a metronome.

3) Play all exersises with your rear pickup.
Set your amp really bright. So this way, you can
revel your clean technique or not. You can hear your unmuted
sound really clear.

4) Practice Rt 3 7 groove at 40-45 (half note)

Then you can increase your tempo as long as you can
play really clean with good tone. (after you check your
recording). I mean really really clean. No noise at all.

Then 45, 48, 50, 52, 54, 58, 60.... Personally use
Four Four (Melodic Ryhthm) from Berklee. just first page...
Play same example in 40, 62, 78, 100.... All depends
on person's pace.

but mostly I love my 40 (tempo). I generally practice really
slow so that I can play very presice and clean. I look for
more clean technique for having good tone.

Hope this help a bit.

1) Do you practice with your amp? Your guitar plugged in?

2) How slow do you practice?

3) Do you record yourself? If you do how often?

4) Do you use a reverb when you practice?

5) What is your amp setting?

a)Treble
b) Middlle
c) bass

6) How long do you practice? Which excercise? (you can't make

Hi Tomo,

After reading all the positive reviews of your AVGP, I decided to order a copy. It should be here in a few days and I am looking forward to building some better basics.

My story seems to be simliar to most who order your material. I have been playing for about 15years, self-taught and enjoying it. Although, lately my playing has fallen in a "rut." I started re-learning some theory, and techniques I learned in the beginning but have become somewhat frustrated with my playing. I am glad to see that you are "available" for questions (although I am sure you're busy!), I will let you know how it goes, thanks!

Hi again Tomo!

I received AYGP on Friday, and immediately put it in and watched the whole video. I must say that your demos between exercises were excellent. Your phrasing and playing were inspiring. I am working on exercises 3 and 4, trying to improve my speed and technique. I never realized how important using a metronome to develop a good sense of rhythm (also speed). I took lessons for about 2 mos. when I was younger and have been learning on my own ever since. I just learned songs by playing them a million times (which is very time consuming). As of now, I am trying to use some of the material I am learning from AYGP and applying to the songs I currently know. I play in a cover band, and I have approx. a 40 song library right now. I am realizing that the songs I know now, can vastly be improved. Particularly, my improvised soloing which is somewhat questionable. I tend to play (phrase) my solos, "thinking" about the patterns and trying to make them sound right. I think that is a problem that has frustrated me for sometime. I will venture new territory and continue to follow the excercises and hopefully my playing, in time, will improve.....right? :) Thanks for the help Tomo!

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for the kind words. I am glad you liked my
AYGP dvd. You got a good point about
importance on metronome. It's really important
to slow down parts and examine all the details, notes
,touch, nuances too. I am happy to see you are
caring those quality tone than just playing parts
over and over...

Soloing... please go back to listen to B.B. King
his singing and his phrasing. You can hear and feel
"Call & response" Please try to feel the space
between phrases. Maybe you need to work on
groove with Rt37 so that you can hear those
chord changes. Maybe more singing? imitating
phrases that you hear inside of you?

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your help! That's right. My booklet contains tabs & detail diagrams
so that anybody can understand to how to play all examples.

Especially I would like everyone to try my rhythm studies on
section 3. From Ex13.... I am still using these examples for my
students.(Berklee and correspondence lessons).

Did you have a chance to apply my Rt 3 7 swing into "Autumn Leaves"
Then you can use triad technique from TMdvd to play over Autumn Leaves
changes. just use 123 set strings. C- F Bb Eb Adim D G- G ....

What's happening these days? You have my AYGP & TMDVD
right? I made more booklet of lesson materials. Sight-reading,
rhythm studies, more standard tunes. I am sure that you got most
of stuff.

I am sure that you got most
of stuff.

Hi, Tomo.

Glad to help!

You know I love Ex. 13 and use the extended version as a warmup. The rhythm studies are one of the great features of your dvd.

Yes, yes. I am glad you mentioned Autumn Leaves again. I will apply both ideas you mentioned. I remember you posted this a while back in your triad lesson. I will print that and attach it to my copy of Autumn Leaves. Jazz!

After a busy work schedule with some travel and major presentations, things are settling down a bit. More time for music and fun! I do have AYGP (booklet is well worn) and TMDVD as well as Live at Acton Jazz Cafe, Live in Japan CD, Put on Your Funk Face CD and Solo Performance dvd. Looking forward to your new recordings! But, I am still working slowly through the lesson materials. I've learned getting through material is not a race. Slow and clean give the best result and lasting improvements.

I know you've been busy. Are you still planning a clinic in NY?

I just saw this thread and have reccently been on a mission to improve my technique. Been playing for about 20 years and I severely need a tuneup on my picking style. I'm hoping this (and sticking with a metronome during practice) will help my picking.
I've also decided to to dedicate a chunk of practice time to learning triads all over the neck. My initial thought is that this would really help me learn the fretboard much better, without being overwhelmed.
My DVD should be here any day....looking forward to it.

Got the DVD last week. Working on the Crazy Chromatics as we speak. Thanks for the info! Awesome instruction tool btw.

Thank you so much! Make sure practice with slow tempo.

(Crazy Chromatics)... No noise, no stress, less movement,
please very careful! You could go wrong direction too.

Highly recommend to practice simple stuff for a while.
with really slow tempo. Even without a metronome
for both hand timing.

And play soft, relax your left fingers a lot. Do no squeeze
it. Just touch it.

Good luck!

It's good question. There is no best answer to this.

It's all about quality. All depend on your level, personality
habit, technique, touch, tone quality.

For instance, when you are working on Part 1.
I don't suggest to go 1212... thing until you can REALLY
play it clean without any noise with 1234...4321....
I will stick Ex1 &2 for 1-3 months.

but key is more you spend on simple stuff... actually
you are accelerateing inside of you. (not shown in
playing but it is shown inside).

So do not follow or making pattens. Like how much?

This is not private lesson. Mass lessons and ideas,
choices. You have to find your choices for you.

Hope this help 3% than wrong info of 97% sure.

PS, I am very happy that if you get 5% of
AYGP. You will make that into 120%.

Hi Tomo,

I've been playing off and on for years with no formal teaching, and I gotta admit I've been stuck playing in the box and feeling a bit stale. After reading the various reviews in this thread I decided to try your DVD and you know what. Your stuff works! The material is structured very well, and the information is presented so that it flows from one idea to the next. It made things very intuitive and easy to understand.

Every time I buy an instructional video/book I always end up feeling frustrated or confused. There is either too much, not enough, or missing information. I mean, your video is the first one I have bought that showed a metronome and then explained what you were going to do with it. Nice.

Thanks from a happy student and customer,

Tomo's AYGP DVD is awesome!

One of the best instructional DVDs in the market.

I recommend it to all my friends. In fact, i ordered one for my friend recently.

Also do mail tomo and order a Tone Merchant Clinic DVD from him. I did it. Its great. Learned a lot of stuff from that clinic dvd too. But have been too busy to put it into practise yet. But i'll get to it soon.

Can't wait for AYGP 2.

Tomo u gotto rush those publisher guys to get your DVD in the stores a bit quicker for our sake.

And pls get all those AYP series under you translated and out on dvds.

Thanks tomo for all the extra notes u mailed me.

Isaac

Hi Isaac,

Thank you for your kind words. I never thought my AYGP video(before dvd)
could sell. Because I never thought about sales... All I did was my passion
and my thought into this instructional project. I didn't tell you this before..
Actually I offered my blues instructional video idea to Rittor music... I was
rejected ... then I offered my funk one.... it was rejected.... Then I had a
really casual conversation with my producer.... no sales pitch... nothing.
He stopped me and asked me what I do with my students/lessons...

That was a birth of my AYGP. Took me 3 times.

Now I have AYGP1234, Rock, Classical, Reform dvd, etude dvd,
Drums123,Bass123,Piano, Sax & Vocal... Series did grow into
16 dvds! Now more coming! (I am just producing other dvds)

All I can say is "Thank you!"

Hi Gary,

Sorry for my late reply. How's your summer?
I love summer. Relaxing. I got up really early today. I love
my job. I am very fortunate that my job is what I love to do.

Yes Ex13... that was one of my quick warm up. I also use Ex15
type "Time ex" to work on my duration of notes. Very slow tempo
too. 2&4 is good. You can also practice with 50 per beats for
slow funk, slow blues, slow stuff.

Mostly I do correspondence lessons at home. I love this
because it's very steady every months. I have many lessons
based on tunes and specific approach/concept/application.
This way you know "what to use" "Where to use" How to use"
If you know purposes and directions, you can accomplish in
short valuable hours.( minutes).

Most of my correspondence students are busy working people
in Japan. So these "A.L" lesson, Rt 3 7 groove, triads, 4 notes,
ii-v.. approach will help their skills in busy time.

Hope you receive my "Etude dvd" Actually those contents are
from my actual correspondence lessons.... Section 4 is one of
my easy jazz lesson. You know that tune is? This dvd I will demo
just like lesson. Hope you like it. Then you have AYGP2...
Walking bassline, many jazz, blues, classical etudes...

Glad to hear that you have more time for your music.
Thank you for listening my cds. My new cd will be released in
Japan first. Then here, stay tuned! Take your time with
my lesson material. I sent more!

TMDVD, SPDVD... these are still really popular items. I really
appreciate everyone. Thanks.

Thanks for asking about my clinic in NY. Yes. Now I got to ask
to do my clinics in different states, countries... I am planning
constantly.

PS, Thanks for coming to my clinic at Chicago ToneFest.

I made my AYGP dvd for all styles and all levels so you will find right
place to start. Yes, picking technique is really easy to look down...
it's important to be able to control your picking and your fingering timing.

If you are interested in learning triads, I wrote my triad thread....
From my AYGP, hope you will find EX19... as useful item to work on
and apply them into your playing.

How was your thought?

Hope you like it. Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Jeff,

Let me answer to your question again.

How much is enough or good? All depend on each person.

Chromatic stuff is for your both hands timing, less pressure... not only
fast smooth movement. So if you a lot of hours with fast, without any review of
your performance. That's not good.

You can practice as much as you want, as much as you need. Make sure
that quality is always high standard. You don't have to finish all either.
Do whatever you can with good quality, tone, touch and time!

Good luck,

Tomo

Hi David,

I am very happy to hear that you liked my AYGP dvd. I just like to help people's playing. Teaching is my passion. Great to hear that it worked on you. It was very difficult how much to put into one dvd. I had more stuff. but I decided to have those 4 sections. No soloing. Most people follow scales /position too much and it is easy to get lost and it is difficult to develop good habit, good tone, good time...because people focus on flashy stuff so much.

I took my jazz guitar lessons for two years. First thing I have to learn was how to use a metronome to play tunes. It was difficult for me to keep in time. After that... I started to learn very organized manner with my practice routine. He was a great teacher. Now he plays with Ron Carter... they have special concert each year in Japan. Takeshi Yamaguchi. If I missed one lesson, I will receive a letter and music from him with detail information how to practice for that week!!! He has many transcriptions ..... he could play it without any warmups ... I do same way, I have many transcriptions for students, I should be able to play anytime. Fundamental does that.

Thank you so much! You would like to get my "Tomo DVD tour box"

Hey Tomo,

I too loved your demos. I also love the pseudo "Funky Town" R&B playing you do. And the way you're totally into it in demo #3 really gets me envious of what you've accomplished!

I absolutely HATED to see that vertical chromatic exercise (the second one) in the video, as it's the most monotonous thing on the planet. However, every guitarist I've ever met always uses that as a starting point (I loved the way you evolved it with the two note versions!) and there's a reason for that. Ah well, guess now is the time I finally fully master it (though I am not a beginner and can play it quite fast and cleanly, I've never actually sat down and practised that exercise myself). I chose you as my guide, and I don't doubt you know what you're talking about!

My question (sorta related to the last question): How should one practise the exercises? Meaning, should I master exercise one and move on to exercise 2? Or should I try to incorporate all the stuff in Part 1 into his practise regimen (say, 15-30 minutes for each exercise) from the very beginning?

Another question: I like the way you said to use the metronome on the 2 and 4 beats (I don't have trouble playing with a metronome, but sometimes I get a little confused playing difficult rhythms with a regular drummer), it's very practical to me! Most metronomes, though, only have a minimum of 40 BPM. This means any exercise you do has to start at minimum 80 BPM, whereas I like to start around 60 for some of the more technically challenging ones (such as the chromatic notes involving picking with your plectrum and middle finger). how can I get around this? Should I practise at 60 until I get up to 80, then drop it back to 40?

Awesome DVD, man, and let me know when the next one comes out!

hello,

Thank you so much for your kind words. So you liked my demo #3....
I love that kind of Stax/High record groove. Glad to hear that you like it.

Simple chromatics are sound boring.... but it's great tool to make smooth movement.... It's all about quality and better tone. I make my students to do Ex1 even slower than a metronome, slower than 40 per beats. With brighter setting on amp, with rear pickup. I just gave one lesson with rear pick for touch and tone today. I teach several pros... one of them got much better improvisation skills than me! but he needed to do shape up his tone and touch. So I do use very simple stuff like Ex1... not about how fast or how easy.... just about nuances and sensitive touch.

You don't have to go section 1..2...3...4.... You can find any comfortable one from each section. You really need to record yourself and listen to your performance when you are not holding your guitar. This is really important than your practicing. Everything comes from what you hear and what you decide... so each exercise ...not only you can practice as much as you want and you can but also... you can step back a few step from the exercise. I would do make more thing simpler and slower than the actual exercise.... this allow you to excel more later.

Amount of time is not important. Amount of quality is far important, So even you have 3 minutes to spare.... Concentrate so good in your valuable 3 minuts. Longer you do you need to be really careful. You could go wrong way long time. I would do 5-15 minutes each one and record a few minutes. Review yourself you write your notes on your performance. This way you will become good teacher for yourself.

Good question about how to use a metronome. You can imagine playing with your drummer with a metronome too. 2 & 4 thing is great for groove and working on changes. but you also can practice with a metronome on every beats. Sure! Actually I was working myself with 52 per beats to play Rt 37 swing and walking bassline. Why? Because I want to play that faster.... This way your time will be very precise. Try to play slow blues with a metronome on every beats =52.... or slow funk groove. There are many ways to do it. but please keep it simple and musical.
$40 tape recorder was my best investment for me!!!

Thank you so much for your time.

Hey Tomo,

Thanks for your response. I think I'll work on part 1 now, as I do want to get my technique in order.

BTW, Get yourself a looper of some sort! I've actually been using my Boss RC-20XL to practise some guitar solos, and then I record myself playing them and listen back, and it's amazing how much I've improved. I've been doing that myself for a while now, so I'm totally with you on the recording yourself thing!

Another question: When you play a line, say F -F# -G -G#, using fingers 1, 2, 3, 4 on the E string, do you lift up the unnecessary fingers? For example: If I am playing the G with my 3rd finger, should my first and second fingers be off the string, or is it okay if they're pressing down the above frets?

Thanks again!

Tomo

You 're welcome my friend. Good luck working on part 1.

Yes, actually I have demo of doing that.... my etude dvd.
That's cool toy for practice or composing song... but a tape recorder is
better many way.... You can record your guitar and metronome together, you can hear more unwanted noise which you want to hear more .... plus when you work on bass line (like Ex 23) you want to keep bass line and sing your solo while you keep playing your bassline... for these purpose tape recorder is better. Rewinding.. is great rest for your ear too. I like that. So please try using a tape recorder too.

For good exercise and good habit. Do not move your fingers too much. Please read the booklet more times. I wrote those advice in details there. When you are playing G with 3rd finger, your first and second fingers be on the string is better.
Less movement is better for your fingering exercise.

Well, I just ordered this DVD (payday yesterday)... I've been looking forward to doing so for a while, now the excitement is heightened because it's actually IN THE MAIL.

I could use something to put my guitar through its paces rather than just noodling or playing along with records... I'm a fingerstyle player mainly (a la Albert/Freddie/Knopfler and studied classical in university- graduating next Friday!), however, I use my right index fingernail like a pick quite often, I have good control using it, can get arpeggiated lines quickly by adding the other fingers and really easy false harmonics by adding some thumb or middle finger into the attack.

... This DVD will still suit me OK even though I don't use a pick, right? I'm not terribly concerned about it, looking forward more to the actual exercises and technique stuff on the disc, maybe something to play to/along with? I'm looking forward to fine-tuning my slap bass guitar sounds (I've done this a while, but more popping than slapping, I've seen the Wootens all do their thing and this seems like a more precise/effective approach)... Can't wait until it arrives!

Hi,

Sorry for my late reply. Hope you like my AYGP. I use a pick. I also use just fingers. You can apply with your need. That's ok. Practice with brighter tone so that you can hear all unwanted notes, noise. Enjoy your practice and performance.

Hi Mike,

Kunitachi is great school. I usually do clinics at Koyo music, Pan music school.

I have many students all over the world but I have many in Japan. Say hello to Yu. Tell him email me. What kind of music, styles are you into? Jirokichi is my favorite club in Tokyo. They have great blues, funk... Check out...
Shinji Shiotsugu (blues guitarist) amazing tasty player. Koji Kana Tsuru
(piano trio) I play with piano player and drummer from this band a lot. Yoshinobu Kojima (piano) he tours with all famous pop singers in Japan. (yousi inoue, Char.....) Drummer Tomoo Tsturuya is same way... tour & record with pop singers. It's great way to make a balance...

Go out and jam with people. Go out!

I picked up the dvd about a week ago and I have been practicing it alot. Some of the early exercises I have incorporated to my daily routine and stretching runs. They help alot. I do find myself struggling on some of the exercise with simultaneous movements, when plucking with two strings at a time. I get a case of the stupid fingers, which is frustrating because I'm an excellent finger picker on acoustic guitars. And man, some of your rhythm sections are tough for me, but I am enjoying it and hoping it will be make me better. Thanks for the great dvd Tomo.

Alan.

Between this Dvd and Robben Fords' "The Art of Rhythm Blues", I have my work cut out for a while.

I just came across this thread. I have decided to cure my financially crippling GAS with a new interest: improving my guitar skills. As a blues/rock/r&b guitarist with extremely little music theory knowledge and no experience with sight reading or tab, would Tomo's AYGP be right for me?

I'm sorry if I missed this somewhere in the post, but does this DVD translate well to acoustic playing? I see that there is an "Accelerate Your Acoustic Guitar Playing", but the content of this one seems like more of what I am looking for. Any thoughts/experience on this issue?

That's wrong concept! AYGP dvd & MAYGP (title confused you, sorry) both same time... find 2-3 exercises from each dvd.

Not important to finish everything. So take your time, but don't worry about mastering every single items to go MAYGP.

I recommend to my students to get both same time and go!

Thanks for asking. It was a great question.

I just got MAYGP, and I really like the new exercises. I just started working on the very first scale exercise 1a (playing CAGED up and down the neck), and also playing the scales at each positon on them. Is the idea to simply learn the names of the C major scale on the neck? How do I know when I'm 'done' with the exercise?

Thank you! Make sure that you think about each degrees. Don't think too much about CAGED. You want to more than shapes etc. Yes. There three ways right? 4-5 positions, 3 notes per string, single string...etc. If you feel comfortable to change any keys.. be able to play them any positions.. then don't practice anymore. You don't want to remember shapes too much. What do you think? To understand possibilities rather that I memorized them really well!

So I should be hearing the degrees and how they sound vs the root. Should I be learning the names of all the fretboard notes? C D E F G A B? Should I be thinking about how to form triads?

I recently started reading this forum and have been reading with interest about AYGP and Tomo's interesting practice tips and videos. I had been working on improving my technique this winter by learning the fretboard better and working on building chords and arpeggios from the major scale. I have already been working on using an OD and working on picking-fretting technique. I have AYGP on order and looking forward to getting started.

For fretboard harmony. Learn all notes, degrees, triads, please get my MAYGP dvd for organizing major scale forms. I presented several important forms.

Great to way! Using OD pedal, set brighter though... so you can hear all unwanted noises, then get rid of them by how you pick, mute...etc.

Thank you so much for you passion, willingness to improve! You want to find something about good foundation for your performance skills. Most of us guitar players all tend to play things right away... fast.. or play same riffs, scales up and down etc. If you do like this, you may will stay same place 2-3 years.

Only you need to do spend your time for focusing good fundamental besides your playing. Please check out Ex2 & EX3 chromatic.. and EX19 Rt 3 7 groove. Maybe you can pick one more and do all 5-10 mins each day for a while. Actually You can really improve yourself ahead than staying same place. Please let me know your progress.

Well, my AYGP dvd will give you steady time feel, chord changes (this will your soloing). MAYGP dvd will give you organized major scale forms and blues etudes will help you build your own solo. I also recommend to get my Tone Merchant clinic dvd. I will throw more blues, jazz etudes and blues related material I use at Berklee.

Just picked up Accelerate and More Accelerate from a fellow here in Toronto. Started reading 'Before You Begin' and got to the second point. "Unless you're Jimi Hendrix,...keep your thumb behind the middle of the neck..." Okay,... I'm in trouble. That is not going to be an easy habit to break. I only keep my thumb behind the middle of the neck when I play barre chords.

Thank you so much! Well, you can do that if you like, but you should have other option too. Make sure that your thumb moves smoothly ...don't grab too deep or strong.

Many of my students love John Mayer, SRV, Hendrix... so many of them have this problem (only one way approach) so we had to undo a bit to have more choices. It's not easy... but all they are happy to make efforts and enjoy their progress.

Don't just get rid of your habits, understand them and work with them.
Be positive every way!

I just got AYGP a couple days ago, and after not playing guitar on a daily basis for a few years, this is definitely a work-out and a great way to work on my fundamentals. Specifically, Ex13 is kicking my tail. I don't want to admit it, but I can't keep up the changes even at 45 on the metronome

Hi Matt,

Thank you so much for your interest. My interest is how you learn about guitar and how to practice daily routine (less hours... more quality and specific direction). Ex13 is great choice. but I want you to understand.
My AYGP DVD is not a private lesson. So material is good for you, but you
need to apply each EX to YOUR PACE. That's what your private teacher would help you. To know you, your habits, your personality. So that youwill feel more comfortable than just pure pressure or boring homework!
So first, forget about a metronome. Play things much slower, make sure you
get natural beautiful tone from your guitar and amp. Then work on your timing. Matt, thanks for your email. Please let me know your progress. You're welcome. I look forward to hearing from you.

PS, I just posted this video. Teaching two important things in a few mins.

Hi Tomo,

I have ordered your AYGP DVD -- how can one not after reading this thread?

You said way back that you use both a pick and fingers.

I started using my fingers way back and getting better at it. You can do so much more than with the pick. Yet I can't do everything I do with a pick. I find that playing with both a pick and fingers gets you the worst of both worlds, so it's either or for me.

When playing electric with your fingers, do you have a particular method or do you just wing it, as I do? It's the more fingers you use the better or is it better to use just the strong ones like J.L. Hooker?

And... if there is a method for electric finger playing, do you teach it on any of your lessons?

Thanks and kind regards

Thanks for doing that. Hope you like it. No specific rules on how or which fingers to use. Once i asked same question to Joe Pass. I got best answer from him. "I don't know" So I try everything! For walking bassline, you can use your thumb for bass line.... 1&2 fingers for a guide-tone(3rd&7th) and others.... or when you play blues, you can use same finger to play single note... I like to pinch with my thumb and my first finger to get "Cat Cry" sound.

Thanks,

Tomo

jam10, check amazon. I think it was around $21 shipped to my door (I have Amazon Prime).

Tomo, MAYGP is PACKED full of tons of challenging material. Between the two DVDs, I could stay busy for years.

As for chromatics, I'm making good progress with basic horizontal, vertical, 1212 3212 3432 1234, as well as the crazy chromatics on 2 strings. Realizing that I have many years of bad habits that have developed regarding sloppy playing and keeping my hands in sync. I am hopeful that continued work on these exercises will help.

The only challenge I'm having with AYGP and MAYGP is that there is SO much great content here that coming up with a daily practice routine that's realistic is really hard.

jam10, I don't think Tomo can talk about pricing and where to buy it beyond the publisher because he's also a vendor. I'm pretty sure the forum rules discourage sales related talks outside of the emporium area.

as a couple other people have mentioned, I think Amazon is a good place to look. I paid something around $21 with shipping for AYGP. I have Amazon Prime so I get free 2 day shipping. It might be a couple dollars more because of that.

It's really a great collection of exercises that will challenge you in various areas of your playing.

Thanks for helping me. I couldn't talk about price etc. Thank you. I hope my AYGP dvd will help to everyone building important foundation, getting rid of years of bad habits, having more control on picking, fingering, muting, right posture and all that.

Thank you.

About tempo setting..... When you read my booklet, you will see suggested tempos. Those are just suggesting only so ... for instance, when you work on EX1,2,3 (AYGP dvd). I think you should play it very slowly and try to hear that your fingering and picking as ONE sound. Please use an amp as much as you can. People tend to follow numbers, tabs, fingerings..but important part is TIMING and TONE. Please try those everyday for 2-3 weeks. Thanks!

Thanks everyone! Try those rhythmic exercises with counting. While you play those, counting... 1& 2& 3& 4&... etc. Similar way, play blues shuffle, shuffle bassline and can you sing melody?

Try!

Good question! How to apply working on shuffle bass line?

Set your metronome around 40-52 (2&4). First just groove the bassline

Then try to sing blues melody or blues phrase while you play the bass line.

Try that!

PS, same way, you can practice grooving with Rt 3 7 chords. Blues, then jazz blues in my AYGP dvd... then apply this Rt 3 7 idea into other standards.

You can play Autumn Leaves, Blue Bossa, Blues for Alice etc.

Enjoy!

Thanks everyone! Time to time, I see the thread about "CAGED"

Even Berklee Modern Method book 1 is based on CAGED form. Page 60,70,80,90,100... each section you see each form from CAGED in 2nd position.

If you have my MAYGP dvd. One section, I put major scale position organization include CAGED, 3 notes per strings (2 strings set ... and sequences) and single string.

First, you want to learn triads before your major scale. and mix those.
Then mix CAGED (big forms) and small triads (3 notes on 123/234/345/456 set) and other fingerings, positions.

Like Tom said..... work on these for a while. Basically you are making your foundation stronger. Good news is once you know these ideas you don't have to do repeat this everyday.

You can start with visualization if you want to. but you want to hear each degree and learn intervals, practice singing ...etc. DO NOT just MEMORIZE them! Learn them, take your time.

Start with 6th string root. Major scale.
G & E Form.

5th String root. Major scale.
C & A form.

Everyone knows these. but I don't know everyone can hear each degrees?
Can you hear Root, M3, 5th? Can you sing?

Singing DO RE MI... is very important too.

Just in case, practice
a) Do RE Mi.... up and down. but you want to hear each note before you play them.

b) Do Mi , Re Fa, Mi So, Fa La, So Ti , La Do , Ti Re , Do......
Do La, Ti So, La Fa, So Mi , Fa Re , Mi Do , Re Ti , Do........

c) Do Re Mi Do, Re Mi Fa Re, Mi Fa So Mi, Fa So La Fa , So La Ti So , La Ti Do La, Ti Do Re Ti . Do.......... etc.

Sing them first and hear them 2nd, then play them. Most people play them before they can hear, before they can sing s.... too much time to memorize.
Do not memorize, try to hear them. and try to play your guitar as if your part of body.

So SLOW, slow down. Don't worry. We all have 24 hours a day. Always somebody behind you and ahead of you. Don't pay any attention to others.
Find your OWN PACE and enjoy your life. Your Life is only ONCE. So make good mistakes and go ahead, enjoy your guitar playing. Not how many hours you need to practice a day. How you practice with your specific short term goal, long term goal and your dream.

I love triad. Three! Each one is special! Root, 3rd, 5th.
Like ....
a) Root 3rd 5th
b) 3rd 5th Root
c) 5th Root 3rd

Tom,

Thank you so much! I really enjoy your posts on here at TGP. You have such great experiences and great advices on guitar playing and tone.

It's true that people tend to hurry with someone's pace ot internet? Or keep buying stuff books, dvds, pedals! We all have same amout of time given... all we need to do is slow down and think things well, organize and go ahead to enjoy own life. Just like "Chance" chance is not waiting for you. Somehow you make "chance" or oppertunity. When I look something. I say... "Where is ... Tonkatsu sauce????" My wife would say "It won't jump out for you" If you don't move around" Life is just like that.

My wish is I let one person know something... help something. One person a day.

I see more and more people got BAD HABITS way before... people got chance to study guitar. I see more and more... actually it's sad thing to see. My students (at Berklee or tape lessons) want to learn about guitar, want to get better... but first we have to do "get rid of BAD HABITS" that's why it's too much good and bad info on internet...

Thank you so much for your kind words.
I wrote one section about triad and application my new book/CD.
You can download free that song from my website.

Best advice on this board.

Today I was teaching my correspondence student... how to review tunes or something you have learned before.... Every semester at Berklee, I ask students... "Ok.. so do you know any tunes... ?" Student say "yes, I know...."
Then I say.. "Ok, can you play it for me? " Student say.. "No, I can.. I could play it before..." It's not lack of preparaion. It's lack of reviewing and applying it more...

So I pick a tune, play it straight, simple. Demoing bad example with pick hard and no rest! Then .. adding ghost notes with the melody like horn players.. then adding 3&7 (guidetone) like piano.. then harmonize melody with 3rd etc.

Then now I will show how to improvise. 3 steps.

but I would review chord changes with Rt 3rd 7th. Then I go over jazz blues changes. Regular.... show 2 more ideas on chord changes. (those are on my MAYGP dvd).

Oh, I need to go back to work! My tape recorder is waiting for me.

Is this DVD too advanced for an Early-Intermediate Guitarist (if that term is OK to use, it's the best guess of where I am in my playing). Thanks.

Anyone know where I can get it?

thanks

Tomo... arrigatou gozaimasu!!

I just bought your DVD, and I have begun with the exercises. They are definitely helping my fingers find some independence. I wish I could break my old habits more easily because it is very hard to keep my thumb in the middle of the back of the neck all the time. But your instructions are clear, and the examples are very helpful.

Most people start to practice licks, chords, major scale, penta tonic box scale etc. I recommend my students to do these fundamental exercises like karate! but less in more! I look for quality so you only need to do 10-15 minutes a day. I am glad that you found that joy. I am very happy! You don't have to put your thumb on the middle of the neck all the time. You just need to be flexible. We work on bending without left thumb! It's fun to discover other side of world. Thanks for your kind words.

This DVD is really really good :) !!

My dad had bought it when it first came out and passed it on to me.

All my chops and feel come from this DVD and PG's IR alone !!

Alas i have lost the tab book to AYGP :( !!

I can see and hear probably everything... but can Tomo or someone please please help me out with the slap guitar section. That is the only part that i find impossible to transcribe... and right now that's what i want to learn the most :( !!

Thank you :) !!

And i do recommend Tomo's dvds to anyone who just wants to see a great person teach something useful instead of going on about how good his chops are or intensely showing off with no meaning :) !! It's just a dvd with a little bit for everybody ^_^ !!

Thanks so much. I mean... as long as you can imagine what sounds like...your sound is coming out from your favorite amp, you can practice your guitar.

Sometimes, I need to practice at hotel ... I really try to imagine as if I am playing through my amp. so that my touch is exactly same as I am using an amp. This .... if you sit right next me, you can't hear anything from my guitar, when I play single note.
