I see Scumback makes replicas of greenbacks and G12H-30's but with higher wattage handling. I'm curious how this effects the sound. Essentially how much of a higher handling capacity can you give an original 25watt design before it looses the fundamental characteristics of the speakers it's aiming to recreate?
Don't know about the Scumbacks per se, but generally when the power handling goes up the speaker gets darker or warmer. Not as bright.

From my FAQ page on the site:
"25 & 30 watt speakers generally sound their fullest and most articulate after 20-25 hours of break in. The louder you play them, the faster they break in by the way, because it moves the voice coil/cone more. Reports indicate they get more defined, more mids, rounder bass response and louder."
"65 watt (HP model) speakers generally take about twice as long, so figure 40-50 hours before they realize their best tone, with the same attributes as the lower wattage models."
"100 watt (XHP) models sound the same as the 65 watt versions, but they need 60 hours to fully break in due to their higher temperature voice coils."
Many have asked me the differences between the lower wattage, 65 watt HP, and 100 watt XHP speakers. The larger voice coil exhibits a tiny bit more bass response & a bit less treble response. That's if you're really listening and recording and comparing tones. In my tests, moving your bass control from 7 to 5 or 6 usually takes care of the difference between the low power and either the 65 or 100 watt versions. The treble might need to be moved from 6 to 7 to make up the difference. They all sound fantastic so order the speaker power handling you need to handle the ouput wattage of your amp where you play it, and wail on them. That's what they're made for, after all!

When I first read the topic I thought Scumback (where'd that name come from?) made a 26 million watt speaker. :D

I'm working on the 26 million watt speaker...I just have to borrow one of those Tesla coils at the Hoover Dam to do it, and they haven't returned my emails yet. ;)
Scumback...man I thought I went through this a bunch of times already? Let me find the link to the site page...here it is:
http://www.southbayampworks.com/thescumbagnamestory.htm
Then after the amp company didn't take off but the speakers did, I had to have a speaker name. So I was talking on the phone one day with my buddy "Fretts" (Jeff Jourard, ex TP & the HB's and The Motels) and he said "Well you had a Scumbag amp, and you're replicating the old Greenback tone...how about if you combine the "Scumbag" amp name with "pre rola Greenback", and call them "Scumbacks"??
Ted Weber loved the name so much he made me promise never to change it. So there you go.
Blame Jeff Jourard, and Ted...they made me do it! :rotflmao

50w Marshall type (50w clean/volume @ 4, 90-95w cranked/vol @ 6 or more) you can go with four 25/30w models.
100w Marshall type (100w clean, 180-200 cranked), four 65w models
150-200w amps, four 100w models.

I think I do remember the scumbag amps. Which begs the question....
Maybe it's an extension of the adage "any press is good press"? :D

It won't happen, since the speaker voice coil diameter would have to increase dramatically, which means changing the cone, and the tone. Sorry.

LOL, I didn't think of that while I was being led away in handcuffs at 11:30 at night...maybe if I'd had the foresight to know the amps wouldn't be big sellers but the speakers would I could have capitalized on it. :rotflmao

Dude, 4- 65 watters in a 4x12 kicks @$$! I have a mixed set of Js and Ms in my Stone-Age 4x12, although an M and H set is equally stunning in the same configuration if you like a tad more low end.
Thanks again Jim!

How long does the 26 million watt speaker take to break in?
Do you offer your FBI service for that model??

Geez, I know somebody who just bought four of those this past weekend for a nice 4x12 and JTM 45/100 style amp he has coming soon...just three days before he found out he has to have a hip replacement. :(

I know it's cool. I've already got 65s and 100s...
i'm just saying you know....electro-voice is competing all by its lonesome in the outrageous power handling department...
then again...your tone hero maybe isn't zakk wylde.

Huh, either the Twin Cities isn't where my latest J/M order is being shipped to, or you have yet to place your order. But hey, I've been wrong before, let me know if I've missed your order somewhere in the piles of emails I get, ok?

I've heard that from others, I've yet to try it (I'm buried in orders/shipping/work right now!) myself.
I'm taking a pile of speakers and a 2x12 cab to Pete Thorn later this morning, though.
M75, J75, J75-LHDC, H55, H75, Scumnico, and he'll be doing mixes of them all with two mics, etc.
The clips won't be up for about a week due to his schedule and that he asked me to get a mic to match the one he's using (Heil PR20) so that the recording is the same on both tracks.
He's going to record the speakers separately and combined. We're going to cut down the riffs to three per speaker, and do audio only this time around to make it faster loading/downloading.

The record for a Scumback being bought on the TGP is two minutes if I remember right...but you're close! If you need M75 16 ohm 65w you'll be waiting until next Monday when the next order comes in, but I have a lot in the pipeline showing up in the next couple of weeks.

You're gonna love it. I received my first Scumback yesterday. After owning several brands, the H75/30 is clearly the best sounding speaker I've ever owned and is a perfect match for my Tweaker.
My wife entered the music room last night and without prompting said, "Wow, that amp sounds great." :aok
My borrowed 1x12 with the EVM12L goes back to the owner today.
