View Full Version : So tell me about Tyler guitars...
I was at Tone Merchants last week and by chance picked up a Tyler guitar. I really did not expect to like these guitars at all. I mean they just never appealed to me. I have to say I was really surprised when I sat down and played one. It felt really good, very broken in and round sounding like my old Strats. I liked it better than the Suhrs and they are very nice guitars. So does anyone out there have a classic. The basic Strat three single coil model. And, how would you rate the finish on the classics ( Two Tone, Three Tone bursts) What kind of pups do you have?
Seems that the Classic is not his most popular guitar nor what he is known for, but being a traditional vintage guy the classic would be the right guitar for me. I have a Lentz, which is the best guitar I own. The Lentz is different from the Tyler. Hard to draw comparisons, the Tyler just has this broken in vibe I really like.
I was the same as you, I didn't think I'd like them either but was pleasantly surprised and _really_ liked at least 2 of the 4 or 5 a local dealer had in stock. They were the ones with the puke colored finish and they had unbuckers in the bridge. I found them very nice to play and extremely resonant. I may wind up getting one myself.

I recently purchased a Tyler Classic and i absolutely love it. Mine is black with a tortoise guard. Suhr V60LP's and a JB trembucker at the bridge. I actually wanted to buy a Studio Elite, but this particular guitar just felt and sounded right. They do feel very broken in right out of the box. I think Tyler's craftsmanship is very evident once you pick one up and spend a little time with it. To me its not so much a fit and finish thing, but more the vibe and soul... it is not a piece of furniture at all, it is a guitar that was meant to be played. The neck and fretwork is off the charts good! Mine even smells like wood. Tone wise i was looking for something very even and warm, but still glassy and quacky... i didn't want something too bright or fake sounding. The Tyler nails this perfectly. Anyway, thats my 2 cents.
I have a Burning Water Tyler with 2 DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Single Coils, and a Duncan JB in the bridge. No mid boost...just the straight SSH config.
The board is rosewood. The trem is Wilkinson.
This guitar sounds and plays just like the member above described. Strat like quack and bell tones with a bit of warmth. The neck feels broken in and the fretwork is just top drawer. I dig the scalloping too...playing up on the neck and riffing is a breeze.
Overall, great guitar...one of my faves.

never played a Tyler but would like to check them out sometime...interesting comments about the "broken in" feel...while I can appreciate the sentiment, I tend to like to break in guitars myself....as you play them over the course of time, they break in according to your own style and playing, which to me is ideal.... in that way a great guitar gets even better over the course of time
just my 2 cents

There was a Tyler anniversary model classic that came out in the late 90's..I think it has Fralins in it [ I think ] and is about as vintage as a Tyler gets.....what pickups are in a particular Tyler make the world of difference to the sound..its a little misleading making comparisons between Tylers based on an assessment of one Tyler only ..there are a number of fundamentally different sounding Tylers depending on electronics , however they all generally have common ground as far as feel and playability goes...I take um over the rest of the pack ....

There's a ton of shots up there.

It wasn't just anniversary models that had Fralin's. Jim used them in Classics from about 96-99/2000. He then switched to Suhr's. I hear he is about to go into pickup production himself?

I like the Classic- it shares the '59 backshape from the SE and has a more "vintage" appearance.
Having said that, the SE HD are my faves.
They have the SE body style and pickguard, but can be spec'd like any vintage guitar (3 singles, 6 screw bridge, solid color, etc).
I would agree with your "broken in" description. I went thru many guitars before my first Tyler 5 years ago. NOTHING feels like it.
The only analogy I can give is to go drive an old muscle car with a big block. It will leave you with the same smile on your face.

Way to revive an old thread! I just got my first Tyler. I generally prefer 1 11/16" nuts, but the 1 5/8" Tyler 59 neck feel fine. 1 5/8 is usually not a problem on fuller necks like this.

It's simple, assuming you're actually a player if you played one chances are 5 seconds in neither the heeadstock or the finish would be any deterrent to owning it.
I never dug th headstock, but seeing that they sound so much more massive then other S-Style fiddles I'm gusssng it's the headstock mass, and I got used to it. Actully quite like it. Paiunt..is the shit as far as I'm concerned.

I wish they came in a 1 11/16th neck width :(
They do! And most Tyler humbuckers come in Gibson or Fender spacing.
(There's even a nut option for 1 9/16 spacing.) Necks come in 3 sizes of the standard '59 shape - thin, standard, and fat. There's a V-neck, too. If you have dimensions or a neck to work from they will build your neck to those specs. I have a neck shape/size that's not officially listed - Jim calls it a soft V.

I don't mind the headstock at all, and I prefer the bigger 4 lines logo on
the SE's over the smaller ones on the classics. I much prefer it's thicker profile over the thinner Fender ones.
I also think the modified pickguard shape quite nice.

My take would be that Tyler headstock lovers make up the majority of the populous. And the Tyler headstock haters are the 20,000. It just so happens that a good portion of the 20,000 frequent here.
My guess would be that people that have never heard of Tyler and don't give a rat's ass about the headstock one way or another make up 99.99% of the population. The other .01% hang out here :D
I used to think the headstock was absolutely hideous (and I'm no traditionalist when it comes to guitars), but it's grown on me to the point where I think it's cool. Can't compare to the Joe Guitar headstock though; loved that one the second I saw it! :rotflmao

And you KNOW how Brent feels about them!
And how Frank loves 'em too! My latest (Icewater) pictured below.
In response to the OP, Tylers are great on many levels.
> Neck - Out of the box, the necks feel smooth, comfortable, and "like home." The smooth matte finish, as opposed to a a shiny gloss-type makes sliding up and down a breeze. If you look up close at the third picture, you can see that the neck looks like bare wood. The rolled fingerboard edges further enhance the broken-in and comfy feeling of these necks.
**No amount of playing, over the years, on my other guitars has ever made them feel as broken in as a Tyler out of the box on day one.
The fingerboard below (madagascar) further enhances the beauty of the neck. Prior Tylers have also used fine cuts.
The neck width / shape is full, fills your hand, and is easy and comfortable to play.
> Tones - The range of tones is wide because of the addition of the midboost pre (with bypass), not to mention Jim's new line of pickups.
These are some of the best sounding, coolest looking tone machines available.....

My new Tyler Studio Elite BW2K is the most versatile, comfortable, and lightweight guitar I have ever owned.
I am extremely picky about neck shape, fret work, and set up. The Tyler is perfect, top to bottom. The neck just feels like home to me.

Jame's shop is fairly close to you. Might be worth checking out. I know they are talking about another Tyler day at TM. Call Rob there for info. That would probably be the best way for some real info.

UPDATE, I just went to bust a dookie. Needed some reading material. Grabbed a Vintage Guitar magazine where i could relax and be comforted by Leo Fender's creations, opened it up and...
IT WAS A TYLER HEADSTOCK STARING BACK AT ME!!! AGGHHHHH.
Seriously though, headstock aside, their are some tylers that look pretty cool from the neck down. I am not a fan of "shmears" or "vomit" or what ever, but whoever posted that red one with the humbucker bridge... that was pretty cool looking.

I'm curious, are you able to match the perceived output of the HB in bridge with the neck and middle or is the HB a great deal louder?
I ask because I have been wanting to spec out a new one and have been considering the HSS thing. I am pretty much a SSS or HH kinda guy and have owned some HSS guitars where the gain difference is a bit too noticeable to make it work well. How do you guys with HSS deal with it?
Great looking BW, BTW.

It depends on the choice of pickups, but I find the balance on my Tyler SE HD to be very good. The pups are JTS2500, JTS2500, Tyler/Duncan Trembucker(which I understand to be some sort of JB). All it took was some tweaking of the pup heights, and I was in tone heaven. The SSH config provides for an extremely versatile setup.
I can't say enough how much I like the JTS2500 single coils... thanks Jim for making such awesome stuff!!

To answer your question; unlike other HSS guitars I've owned, with the Tyler I don't notice a drop in volume when switching from the HB to the singles. I just notice the difference in tone. The balance is perfect, even in the "in-between" 2 and 4 settings on the 5-way switch.
My BW came equipped with a Tyler Super HB and two Duncan Classic Stacks.

I just got my Tyler last month. I could tell right from the start that it was a work of art, the attention to detail is just top notch. I have to be honest though, I didn't groove with a few things when I first got it. I wasn't used to the whole "rolled frets" thing. I found that if I played a certain type of run on the high E string, it would slip off the fretboard a little to easily. I haven't noticed that happening at all lately, so I guess I'm just getting used to the neck and fretboard now.
His '59 neck carve is the best feeling neck I've played without a doubt. Everything feels almost effortless. Great trem, and the guitar resonates unlike any electric I've played. None of my other guitars have been getting any action lately.

Also the back of the neck has that satin "unfinished" feel to it.
Another reviewer put it best. The "bare wood" feel of the body and neck increase the "skin to wood" ratio and lend a really organic feel to the Tyler. It's quite something to behold and hard to put in words.
You know a Strat neck feels after 30 years of playing? That's how the Tyler feels, all over. Crazy.

I rember going to Sounds Great here in the UK many many years ago, just browsing the many high end guitars they had in at the time, then I saw my first Tyler, a burning water. I'd never even heard of them before and that guitar just stopped me in my tracks, so different from all the other stuff they had. I guess that stayed with me and in early 2007 I splashed out on a Tyler Dann Huff Classic.

I talked to Lance and I thought he said they were all pre-ordered and pre-sold... but maybe not.
There was a Limited Edition run of 36 total Ice Water Studio Elites made. (The Studio Elite has the unpainted "arm cut".) They were all sold out.
A Limited Edition run of 12 total Ice Water Studio Elite "2K"s will be made. (The 2K is all finished, without the "arm cut".)
I believe the one just sold was #8 of 12 and was the first Ash/Maple guitar in the IW 2K line.

I tried to spec out one of these Ice Waters with Lance and I was told they would all be the same - like a limited run, no differences. Obviously this is not the case. I never understand why this happens. I would have bought one. Obviously they are not all the same. Just BS.
I asked Lance about this when the first "series" had come out, i.e. the ones with bare arms, and as I understood him, you're not able to spec it out - I asked coz I wanted a 2Yk version (i.e. wi/o bare arm). That came later as another limited series (12?), prob. by "popular" demand :-) ...
With the IC series there are variations; first and foremost body wood and neck wood, but it's not spec'able. If you want ash, you might ask/pay to get in line if one shows up, but you can't spec - so it seems at least. :-)

Yeah, I understand that - but the way it was explained to me was they wanted them all the same because it was a limited series. No variations, which makes sense - until they have variations. They're not all the same. They aren't all made. So, spec'ing one should not be that big a deal. So, it makes no sense, but that is the way it is.
I love my UW Tyler, I guess I just won't own an Ice Water. :(

This might be a communication gaff. The first run of Ice Waters may have been the same but the second run (Ice Water 2K) were ordered by WW with variations. WW can spec them, we (end users) can't. If I remember correctly, WW ordered 6 Ice Water 2Ks with a given set of specs and another 6 Ice Water 2Ks with a different set of specs. When Lance said they would all be the same he may have thought you were asking about some aspects of that model that all 12 Ice Water 2Ks would have in common. (I took those orders. Given that there are a lot of possibilities for a Tyler guitar there were actually very few variations.) That kind of thing happens. You miss a syllable here and there and you've got a mistake. Lance always seemed like a good guy who had a handle on these complicated orders. He's been doing it for years. But even he missed a detail once in a while. I doubt that he purpously tried to mislead you.

I don't think Lance tried to mislead me. He's a nice guy. I actually went to the shop (Tyler) and asked about what I wanted first. I was told it was cool, then, as you said, it turned into a communication gaff. Only 3 of the UWs have been built, I will always think it's silly I can't change the bridge and neck wood for a build that won't even start until next year. :nuts

I used to own a grosh strat. The feel is night and day. I prefer the Tyler by far. But the Grosh had some monster tone too but just didn't feel as comfortable.
I went through three in the past few months (two SE's, a Black Classic and a JoeX Black). Loved the feel, vibe, mojo, even the headstock. But, for me, the tones just weren't what I wanted, a little too hi-fi. Great axes though...

They all have this "sheen" to the tone, kinda hi fi. I tried different Tyler pickups in them, and a set of Lollar Blackfaces too. Just didn't jibe with me. Don't get me wrong, I don't blame Tyler, I love his stuff, just didn't work for me.

Dang, you must have a fat sounding amp! Tweeds are a very weak "true" vintage sounding P/U... I would guess the heavy Alder offsets the more scooped sounding Lollars. Jason makes great stuff.
Tylers are just huge and fat sounding... not really too vintage toned, but they have the vibe.
FWIW- Tyler and T. Anderson are my favorites.
I have a /13 EDT13/29, that I run mostly in Class A mode (plenty loud enough). The amp and axe are a little "mid challenged", but I throw a TS9 Clone in front and use the mid boost on the amp to get me out front for solo's.
I have a set of Specials here too, I am going to wire those into a pickguard some day and try them in the strat.

The Specials are a totally different breed... way to dark for me. I had a American Std Strat. My favorite setup were Blondes in the middle and bridge and a Tweed neck.
Tyler makes a Strat killer. The only thing I've found that out Strats a Tyler is my WW-10 with the Custom John Cruz P/Us. But, the Tyler still has a fatter tone.

I've got one in mamywo. It is a killer sounding, lightweight guitar. Thick in the mids with plenty of balls in the bridge HB, cleans are still very stratty. I prefer Mamywo to Ash. I like Alder and mahogany best of all, though now days mahogany seems to be getting so heavy. So Mamywo is a nice compromise, it is MUCH lighter, and kind of sits between alder and mahogany tonewise.

It's black n blue schmear. I'm gassing badly for a nice SE with maple neck and this one has one of the coolest paint jobs.

I'm not crazy about black and blue when its the satin finish, but w/ gloss it looks sweet! The blue really stands out.

I have a Tyler studio Elite HD and I love it. I didn't like the headstock at first but I got lucky with my headstock being the version which is a little less wide with less James Tylers names on it and I tell you I am used to it now and it doesn't bother me and I like its uniqueness.............. most of all what a great resonant sweet sounding beauty. mine is Copper Patina schmear

How many of you guys use your Tyler as a workhorse and beat the hell out of it?
Every single one I have seen is in PRISTINE condition! Show those well played ones!

Tyler finishes appear to be very tough. Some are played out, but the tough finish might give the impression they aren't a "workhorse" guitar.

Yeah, I play mine 5 hours a night every weekend. But it looks pretty mint still.

REALLY hard to see wear on a mat finish guitar that has so much going on in the paint. You'd hardly notice a chip in a burning water, it would just look like part of the finish.
I've been playing my burning water since 2003 and all that has happened is the finish has glossed up on the neck and parts of the body. The pickguards get beat, but I change pickups so much that I'm already on my 5th guard.

what kind of finish does Tyler use on solid colors? Poly or nitro?

Poly, but you can request nitro. Shmears and vomits are proprietary, but I think poly based

Mine is a gloss Arctic Mint. I'm guessing it's poly. It's an '07 and looks brand new but it gets played out. Of course I've only had it for a few months so it shouldn't have many dings. I don't know how much it was gigged before I got it.

I thought you can't spray nitro in California? Either I'm mistaken or does he send nitro jobs out of state?

...so here's a very recent and cool clip with Wayne Krantz, Keith Carlock and Tim Lefebvre...of course, Krantz is playing his black Tyler with the gaffer tape over part of the headstock logo...;)
...kind of goes with the whole Tyler sense-of humor...
