Hi,

I have been working with Stettinas "Speed mechanics" to improve my picking and books by Gambale and J Zucker to learn how to sweep. I also want to learn tapping. Can anyone suggest a book/dvd where I can learn the "basic moves"

kindly

Why don't have a look at youtube. There's a ton of free instructional stuff there, also about tapping.

I learned tapping like this:

Someone said, "have you seen that Van Halen guy - he puts his right hand finger on the guitar and plays it like this..."

I went home and tried to figure out how to do it, and did figure out how to do it, long before I knew it was called tapping (learned that from some tabs later).

There are two basic techniques for the release - down "stroke" and up "stroke" - learn both. Van Halen wrote the book, but check out the Jeff Watson (of Night Ranger) "8 finger tapping" and Satriani's "chordal tapping" (Circles I think is the name of the tune where this is really prominent).

Then of course there's Stanley Jordan:

with a "slightly" different technique :-)

And many others.

Best,
Steve

satriani - check out the tune "Midnight" off of surfing. It's actually very easy to play - has distinct patterns that are easy to follow and sounds cool as can be.

Also try Steve Lynch, he has 3 books. I think he wrote them when he was at the musicians institute? http://store.lynchlicks.com/cart.php?m=product_list&c=7
I also like watching vh footage for tips on hand position, and working throough vh tab is probably good also. Good luck! BB
