View Full Version : Jazzy Blues Fusion harder than I thought
journo

Hi,
I'm was very inpired by the jazz fusion giants of the 80's like Larry C, Robben F and Lee R and have continued to listen to them. Lately there has been Scott Lerner and some others. I wanted to play something along those lines and wrote this track called Window Pane. I usually get my titles from a fellow swedish guitar player who doesn't like this kind of music. He says it's as exciting as licking a window pane i sub zero weather.
I found that although the chords were simple it was very hard to solo over but here it is warts and all. I appreciate any and all comments regarding sound, phrasing, choice of notes, timing and any other thing you feel like commenting.

Hi Scott,
Thank for taking the time from the diapers to listen. I remember what a hectic time it was. I didn't get twins but the boys are only 16 months apart so I almost get it. Now they are 11 and 13 and I get mor etime for my music.
Thanks also for your encouragement. That help another step foreward.
Cheers,

Hi Red Ant,
Thanks for the kind words. How could I possibly deny a BT request after that. ;)
I hope you enjoy it and that you will reward my work by posting a take.

Hi journo,
like ScottL said, very much pro quality and
Carlton tone, touch, nuances that you captured.
I love Carlton myself.... he is great blues player first
and he is great jazz, bebop player.. his chords , harmony
sense are just amazing. He can comp like piano player
and he can do any chord melody ....
So can you play this tune's chords and rhythm?
Can you play single note playing(solo..) without backing
tracks.? this way you can really check how much you can
play over changes(without backing track)
Great tone, tasty playing.
Tomo
Ah man this was great!!!
My wife asked me if that was Larry:)

Hi Tomo,
Thanks for listening. As a matter of fact, it was your sound clip "Kyoto" that started me thinking about writing a track like this so thanks for that too!
Your advice is valued and I realize at once many of my shortcomings. The most prominent being that I hate to practice. ;)
Still, "no pain, no gain". Back to the woodshed.
Cheers,

Hi Rid,
Tell your wife I love her and that she made my day.
Then ask her to see a doctor because there must be something wrong with her hearing. :D

Hi Norm, Marcello and Brad,
You guys are too kind. At the time I started visiting the Gear Page I was sort of tired musically and fed up with my playing. I got more sort of interested in the gear aspect of things by stuff said here. Then I found the sound clip area with clips by Scott L and Ed Degenaro. That really started me to doubt my playing abilities. At one time someone posted a backing track of a blues shuffle and I had a go at that and not only found it a lot of fun but I was also happy with the result. That led me into a sort of intense period of writing tunes that seems to last and I think my playing has improved. You guys are an inspiration. Your comments and advice is what keeps me going. Thanks!!

Hi Mats,
Thank for mentioning my tune "Kyoto"
Glad to hear that.
I was listening your tune. Again great taste and your tone.
Great part is you got your style and great touch. I am really
proud of what you can do with your guitar. Most people
can't gain "Melody and space" importance... it's really easy
to fill out.
I was playing my guitar ..thinking about your tune.
You can play very bluesy line for 1 & 4 chords, but
you can add I & bVII triads, F & G.... if you play these on
123 strings, you get mixo tone and if you play G aug
triad right before you go to IV chord... those sound
lead I to IV nicely, without backing you can show the
direction.. which is good technique ... say when the band
get lost... then use this type of resolution so the band
pick up from your phrase.
Then A-7 to D7 or D7(b9,b13..) ... if you use more
C Major 7 arp.. which is b3,5,b7 and 9th for A-7
(just ideas... you still have to play very musically but
you have musicality already!!!)
maybe you could play ii v licks (bebop licks)....etc.
Overdrive tone solo... if you could relax a bit.. your
intonation will stay nice... that's really difficult to control
That's my important point for myself. It's really easy to
dig in picking and your left fingers... so we should really
watch out for this. (myself)
I hope I didn't say too much. Teaching is my profession..
it's very easy to get into it.
Keep writing original tune. Great arrangement too.
Hopefully I can hear more... but this is great composition
and performance, so please don't give away whole thing.
You save more tune and make your CD!!!

Hi Tomo,
Thanks a million for the lesson. I'm printing it out as I write this.
I'm afraid I don't really understand all of it as my theory is a bit so-and-so.
I will definitely fire up the backing track and try your ideas.
When I win the state lottery I will get myself a ticket to your place and get myself a few lessons.
Thanks again!

Hi Mats,
You're welcome! Just a idea... I will email you
more details and something. Hope these will help
you. But I don't use that much theory. I don't like
anything complicate myself. Simple stuff, something
you can hear and feel.. that's the stuff I look for.
But harmony stuff is very important for me to understand
same note against different texture chord so that each
not own colors. If you can see the colors then you
don't have to see shapes. Idea was ...if you can hear
the changes without changes... then backing track
will enhance your playing. Only thing you have to watch
out is you don't want to sound like you are just running
changes.

Mats,
I liked your playing very much. Nice tone. Perhaps a little stiff, maybe take a few more chances. My good buddy Mark is fond of "digging in"when he solos which is simply coming up with a little melody riff and hanging out with it for a while trying to come up with many different ways of expressing that melody. This allows you to take off at any time and then return again. Also my teacher Larry (more on this beast later), likes to see his students play whole choruses in different rhythmic structures i.e. one chorus of triplets, one chorus of sixteenth notes, one chorus of 16 triplets, etc. Also, consider using the whole guitar. Low vs. high. And finally, strive to put every note right in there.
Good luck

Robert, clipping was pretty bad, but I liked your playing. The clean tone was pretty awesome when it came through clearly. I'm having similar issues right now while my desktop PC is acting up. My laptop does an OK job, but it loses some of the clarity and timbre.
Mats, I finally finished splicing the take that I originally intended to post. Here's the REAL Jammin with Journo (http://www.digitalsoundplanet.com/Members/000135783_000011073_proj.mp3). I tried to make it sound like we were jammin in the same room. Hope you like it. :D

Rotren,
Obviously a Squire 51 in your hands can be a dangerous thing.
Your playing has set me back at least 6 months. Good tone, bad tone who cares? The gain solo was in the pocket and delivered the goods. More clips please.

Hej Rotren,
The sound is as you say budget. The playing, however, is nothing about budget. Cool phrasing and eminent timing.
A now really OT: How come you left Umeå and ended up in Canada?

I finally got my crappy SB Live to work with recording, so here's my quick improv take. Excuse the crappy sound and timing- used a Valvetronix into SB Live and used Audacity for recording (no speaker sim available). I play a Squier 51. All low budget to the max!

Thanks for the compliments guys! Tack Mats!
In 1996, I met a girl from Canada when she was visiting Sweden, and to make a long story short, we figured it'd be best we get married and live in Alberta.
I remember reading your articles in Fuzz Mats, I subscribed to that magazine. Very good stuff! I listened to some more clips on your homepage, impressive. How do you record your drums?
Those clips above were actually the first time I recorded myself on my computer. I just need some better way of doing it - I hate that fuzzy, digital, straigh into card-sound. If anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears. I have a SB Live, Pentium 4 with 256 MB RAM, new fast hard drive.

Hi,
I use Native Instruments Battery 2 as a sound generator for drums and I just program them using a MIDI keyboard. I like Battery 2 a lot.
If you want to record guitar direct I can recommend the Boss GS-10. I use it on almost everything I record nowdays. Sometimes I use Guitar Rig.

Rotren... nice takes... I think I like your approach on the cleaner version.. maybe it is you tone there. I like the lines and notes in the gain version tho.... thanks for putting it out there.
