Not as impressive as "The Who" post, since his guitar dominates the original tracks already.
...now, remove the effects, that would be really cool :D

Welcome to 2 years ago.
I kid, I kid. These things are a gold mine. The first one I heard was sent to me by a friend, David Lee Roth Running with the Devil isolated. It's pretty funny hearing him yelp like an idiot alone in a room.

the sound that spawned decades of cheesy excess in terms of technique, effects, whammy bar abuse, etc.....but still one of the greatest sounds of all time. undeniable guitar charisma. also a great tutorial in rhythm/lead playing in one track.

Yeah these clips were really cool, makes it easy to pick the stuff out. Such cool feel. I didn't realize just how many pick scrapes he could fit into a song!! And he even does THEM well!

Punchin at 1:98 on panama? Or just him having fun twisting the riff.
Seems like just 1 take up till there.

Listen to that tone on Unchained! Not a fan of Diver Down tones, too brittle.

But he was quite an entertaining idiot in his day!

2 years ago? Uh, no.
The isolated guitar tracks weren't made available until after Guitar Hero VH was released, which was on 12/22/09. At least Guitar Hero was good for one thing.

Damn - that's some fine playin' and his sense of what the song needs in terms of fill is spot on.

That was definitely a punch-in. Probably to set him up to re-do the solo...

How is that done? From the original multi track masters, or is there some software I'm unaware of that can do this?

Don't forget this one:

Absolutely stunning. Ed's swinging so hard here and just on fire the whole time. He fits so many cool licks in such a short amount of time - a real juggling act.

That was absolutely jaw-dropping. Especially all the whammy bar action, considering that was PRE-Floyd Rose!. That thing never went out of tune during the song...

He is a frickin amazing player by anyone's standards. His plexi tone is still hailed as one of the coveted Gold Standards.

Went to the uploaders site and listened to Jamie's Cryin'. It was much more a part of the song than the whole song. It's so cool to hear these in isolation when you know the result of all the pieces fitting together.

You know what's cool in the panama one, the cleaner tone in the quiet part only seems cleaner due to his lighter touch. I always figured he turned down a little and then turned back up, but i can't detect a part where he is hitting the volume knob. Talk about touch sensitive. It also reinforces the stories about how hard he hits the strings when he plays.

I only listened to Panama, but I agree with the person that said "the brown sound isn't really that brown." Honestly, the playing is amazing, and in the mix with drums and bass that sounds great, but if I walked into a music store and someone had that tone dialed in I wouldn't think it was "good" tone.
Just goes to show that an amazing player can take a "so-so" guitar tone and make it amazing with their playing, technique, and making it fit the mix.

I hear colors.
I'm thinking the tracks are a little more squashed than on the original ... out-of-mix tone might seem altered.

that be me..;)
you're correct. assuming these are unaltered, generally solo'd recorded instrument tracks will sound like crap because they will be eq'd to sit in the mix...not to sound good on their own.
its probably more a psycho acoustic phenomena that the guitar will tend to sound much smoother and better blended in with all the rest of the tracks as how we'd normally be listening

There's also a chance they've been eq'd to jump out of the Rock Band mix a little more. I.e., if you soloed the original track, it sound different than these Rock Band iso tracks.

first of all, as some others have said, studio eq'd guitar tracks are meant to be heard in a mix and will not sound as good on there own.
secondly, "Ain't talking about Love" which is the first track in the OP, has definitely been doctor'd, or rather, is not exactly as it was before(no mastering for example). " Ain't talking about Love" starts with guitar only anyhow, so you can hear that tone with out the other pieces of the mix. I just listened to the original track, through the same speakers, and the two tones are wildly different. What these recordings are good for is to hear what a great performance Eddy put on.
