What a band!! Omar Hakim, George Duke, Dave Sanborn, Hiram Bullock, with Lindley on vocals and rhythm guitar?? Yikes!!! Has to be one of the best cover tunes and bands ever.

Lindley's playing a Teisco Del Rey through a Dumble. That's gotta count for TGP points.

so supremely "musical". the video with terry reid epitomizes all that i value in a communal musical situation.

Way more than playing the instrument well, he changes the way the whole band sounds. That's some deep shit.

That clip w/Terry Reid and Alan White you've posted before. It's so great, I never get tired of that one

polyester all the way baby. One of my favorite musicians and I was fortunate to see El Reyo X quite a few times in the '80's. In fact, for me Lindley, Ry Cooder and their ilk was the only music that I really liked in the '80s.

Unfortunately, Hiram Bullock died, but I think everyone else is available for a reunion tour. That would be great!

I have a Teisco Del Rey and was thinking of using one of the pickups in a tele build but after seeing that video I may just keep it for rhythm stuff. Very cool sound through a Dumble.

He's created his own thing. There's nobody like him. Taste, notes, tone, he has it all. Very Greasy is a spectacular record.

Lindley was definitely an inspiration for me to start playing lap steel and I learned all his stuff way back when I started. That said, I like his guitar playing even more.

That clip with Hiram was never a touring abnd, it was when Lindley guested on Night Music and they were the house band.

That first clip of "Your Old Lady" was from the original version of his El Rayo X band, and the fantastic Ian Wallace on drums is sadly no longer with us either.

Absolutely.

A personal run-in of sorts I had with Lindley is responsible for one of the most crucial musical epiphanies I've had in life, and was a total game-changer for me. If you and I ever get the chance to hang out, remind me...

1971. Alan White would join Yes the following yearYeah, after a short stint with the Plastic Ono Band (GRIN).

It sounds to me like Lindley is playing this tune in A or Bb, he's on the second neck of the lap, in E tuning (sounds like to me - the top two strings are the root and fifth below it, so that's probably open E), but tuned up to A or Bb - I could be wrong, but that's how I hear it.

Mr. Dave certainly is one of the most joyous players I've ever heard. In addition to being a genuine genius, his intonation is nearly flawless.

Thanks, Dana O.

That Terry Reid vid is pretty cool, I've seen it a few times since I saw it on TGP a while ago in a thread about the Black Crowes. I've only been able to see Lindley once 'cause I have lived out in the sticks but I do get to regularly see one of the best bands that have ever come from Mr. Dave's influence- Anybody who digs Lindley will very likely be totally down with Major Lingo:

Lingo does the occasional Lindley cover, like "Walk To The Sun" or "Premature"

Man, the more I listen to that Terry Reid video, the more my mind is blown. What a great voice Terry has - amazing!

Not to mention Mr. Dave's contribution - excellent! Made me kind of miss teh "good old days" of rock!

Thanks Matte, Dana O.

For me, Lindley is everything right about music. He's a musical soul, y'know?

I guess they call it being a musician.

He's so much more, though.

Lindley is the guy who inspired me to start playing the lap steel.

"Mercury Blues" can be played in either Open D or Open E. I play it in Open D but probably because that was what my guitar was tuned to when I decided to figure out how to play the tune.

I've been going to see David Lindley play since I was 8....

The Late for the Sky record is the most soulful playing ever....

He can do no wrong in my eyes...

I saw him in the 80's at a small club and was just floored by his playing and his tone.

I loved the sound he got with a Boss CE-2 and I've been using one ever since and I noticed on Jackson Browne's tour last summer that he is also still using one as well.

thanks for that,matte;
i love lindleys' sound, ever since i first heard him play.
the band was killin, terry reid never really got his full due,did he?
real nice lock between the bass and drums.
the sheer spontaneity of alan white hitting that spliff, and coming in when he did reminds me of why i started wanting to be in a band in the first place.
more than anything, that clip makes me nostalgic for the days when we thought music could change the world.

Lindley is truly a gifted player. I always enjoy hearing him. I've seen him play live a few times. Twice with El Rayo X and once solo. I've also been luck enough to hang with him a little. First time was back about the time he was playing with Jackson Browne. He was at the Blue Guitar when it was in Old Town. He was trying out a Tele he had some work done on. He was playing the Tele through the "shop" amp. A Fender Tweed Deluxe. He just ripped on the Tele for about 15 minutes or so. He's just as good on guitar as he is on lap steel.
Second time I worked on the sound crew when El Rayo X played at the Bacchanal. He's quite a character. He does a great impersonation of Jimmy Stewart among other things.
He got annoyed with his Dumble head at sound check. He played the gig with his spare amp a black face Bassman head. Sounded great.
Third time was a year of so ago at the Museum of Making Music. It was the opening of the slide guitar exhibit. He and Sonny Landreth did solo sets and hung out for a while. I bought a cd from him a chatted for a bit. He's a real nice guy and very funny.
If any of you haven't seen his solo acoustic show you should. I would highly recommend it.
