View Full Version : compressors comparable to the Keeley...
Hey guys,
I am hoping to buy a compressor pedal and liked the idea of a Keeley compressor - until I found out the price...
Can anybody recommend any good compressors for cheaper, around the price of £60?
Many thanks.

The Keeley is based on the MXR DynaComp. Whirlwind just reissued the DynaComp as the Red Box compressor, hand wired w/ true bypass for $139. If you want to go cheaper, you can get the new MXR version for $79, but it is SMC PCB, and is not true bypass.
I believe the guy who owns Whirlwind is the guy who designed the original MXR pedals.

the Keeley Compressor is a hot rodded Ross compressor.
There are tons of other builders who make Ross Compressors.
An affordable one is cmatmods. http://www.cmatmods.com/compressor.html
Sry to correct Joe Porto but it's not based on the DynaComp.

The best "compressor on a budget" pedal around is a Marshall ED-1. I picked mine up on ebay for about £25 delivered. Its great.
I also got an EHX white finger compressor for about £50 second hand. It sounded good but the box was way too big for my liking.
You might also want to check out the BYOC compressors---I think they're quite similar to the Keeleys. They're quite expensive here in the UK though :(

Yep...you're right...sorry. I was confusing the origin due to this quote from RK's site:
~~~Mr. DAN HUFF said "Yours is the only compressor to come along since then that surpasses the tried and true MXR fave. His comment was simply that after 25 years of only using the old dyna comp, the Keeley Compressor is the first one to warrant a change in the signal chain!"~~~
I do believe the Ross and MXR were very similar designs, both being based on the CA3080E chip.
I quite like the idea of the MXR dynacomp as it is only £50 here in the UK. Is it a good comp? mark out of 10?
Thanks for all the info guys!!
I don't know how it compares to the Keeley, but I ma very happy with my Visual Sounds Comp 66, which is around $100 new, and can be got used for around $50 (which is what I paid on ebay). great sounds, and very quiet (has built in noise control).
You have to get the "74" Script reissue, for it to be a good one!! Isn't the Keeley a copy of the Ross, witch is a copy of the Dyna??
I've owned and gigged both, and disagree. Keeley is much more transparent.
