Dumb Q that I probably already know the answer to: quantizing

I'm asking this question to (hopefully) prove my other guitarist wrong in my band.

He claims that you can quantize a drum track, EVEN if it wasn't originally recorded to a click.

I say baloney, and that it's impossible, because the speed of the drums is all over the place.

What say you?

yes

i use ableton live for recording and one of its strong points is quantizing.. you can record and entire band and then quantize the whole thing accross multiple tracks.

its labour intensive.. and there will be audible glitches if you pull the tempo too far from the original speed.

i do it all the time since we record all of our jams to 8 channels.. then i can fine tune any drift from the start of the jam to the end.. or even glue takes of songs together from multiple sessions..all without ever playing to a click.
