View Full Version : Smooth Jazz Demo Clip Still Gets Gigs~13 Years Later
Lucidology

This was an intentional attempt at conveying the Smooth Jazz vibe in order to get gigs a long time ago ...
Was really holding back and trying to repeat motifs & such ... staying real inside ...
Not really what I would call my best playing when it comes to time & chops, etc. ...
but IT STILL reels in the gigs after all these years.
Now the picture's new... but the clip ain't ... lol
Oh, & that's one of my samba tunes ... Just a GB10 into a Roland JC-77 ...

Thanks Arthur ...
Yes, often do this gig with percussion & tracks ..
If the percussionist can't make it .. then I just do it solo with accompaniment ...
That's one of my many original tracks ...
I write up a lot of cool little progressions, melodies
& sculpture grooves that sort of fit the genre ...
Plus, do a bunch of standards with Latin & Funk type backings ...
Rarely in a traditional swing or slow ballad style ...

Aptos isn't too far away ... that's for sure ...!!
Yes, the 'acoustical' guitar thing they wrote cracked me up ...

Thanks so much you guys ... Honestly don't know how i keep it flowing ...
only that I play three to four hours gigs being the only guy soloing that I have to keep it interesting, at least for myself to some extent ...
Maybe that's the "secret sauce" ... lol
Funny U should say "perfect" ... my great studio & fusion band bass playing buddy, Kim Stone,
calls me as the guitarist who always plays the "perfect" part for the song, groove or tune ...
But would never make that claim myself, as I'm my own worst critic that's for sure ..
Tell one thing you guys .. I'm a piss poor blues player in comparison to guys like U...
U two would get the call way before I would ..
Yeah - Be on the lookout for me too, Joseph.

Excellent Paison!
Great sound and very musical as usual Joeseph. I think the trick w/ those JC amps was to get a compressor in front?
So you're a busy working guitar player who can handle many styles and has a good attitude about it? We could all learn a lot from "your book" ( as my Aunt used to say) There's a reason why people get steady work and you have the goods.
You're an inspiration in all ways, not just the music....

I think all the cats who want to play gigs should look over your press kit.
Good work will always pay off. As you know, to keep working is to keep the hustle on.
Having the tools to book work is essential. You have created an excellent calling card.
Once again well done.

For sure, a compressor often completes the equation ...
Have you ever played one of those George Benson Ibanez models ...
One of the best necks ever made IMO ... plus just a great sounding axe.

There's a lot of great grooves that go on in the Smooth Jazz genre ...
As for a compresser? I've used nothing but a Maxon CP101 on all my guitars for a quite a while ...
Even the GB10 .... I just love what it does to the notes & the feel of them. No matter what axe or style I'm playing ...
The Maxon is an optic compressor ...!! Only two knobs which I both always just leave at noon ...
unless I need to cut through the mix a little more, then I turn both of the knobs up...
But it's so subjective ... U might hate it ... lol!!

I dunno, the MO for me is not being a DEEEK and asking for a reasonable rate for the gig. But yeah, let's hear your thing too, I'd like to hear how others get gigs, especially at the "clubbing" level. Gig-pig?!?!?, if that what you do for a living, jeeez, man, f'em and go for it, lol.
Over in my neck of the woods, it seems that live music is kinda dying, which is a shame. Well, there are some bands that gig, but to sustain an actual living off of it? Good luck.....

True dat. Our drummer usually books gigs, and he can be a handful. I booked the last one, went pretty smooth with our own Cochese (Chris Delis) sitting in for our other guitar guy. He did a bang up job learning (and singing) some of our tunes.
Seems like there's more solo gigs to be had these days, or duo's, and acoustic, somewhat. Even some of the high paid tribute bands have been cutting it down to lighter acoustic nights. Only gigs that seem to pay these days are the corporate, and or party gigs......
