They are hitting me up over instant messaging. They claim they are my sister, that she is in London, was robbed at gunpoint and needs cash to get home.

I've filled out the hacked accounts profile at Facebook. Any other thoughts on what to do? They gave me a physical address where they want the money sent.

This happened to a friend of mine a couple months ago. Sounds like the same exact scam.... not sure if the address is the same, but it was also London based.

Wouldn't being mugged at gunpoint in London be rare? Knifepoint, yes.

The English is a bit off too.. Unless your sister has taken on that Nigerian Internet accent.

Kinda makes you wonder how easy it is for them to pick up cash at this Western Union location without your sister's ID.

Usually a simple password change stops the problem.

As far as reporting the hacker... that's tough...

I'd love to know how they'd do that. I was wondering the same thing.

Yep - her account has been disabled temporarily.

I should have said, "What a coincidence! I am in London as well! Let's meet."

I have used Western Union before. When you send money, you are given an alphanumeric code. You then get in contact with the person and give them the code. That person shows up at the Western Union and fills out some paperwork, including their name and the code. There's the possibility of the WU worker asking for an ID, but I have never been carded.

A very gullible guy in my new town was taken for $200K! What was he thinking???

A Naperville (http://www.nbcchicago.com/topics?topic=Naperville) man got duped twice: He lost $200,000 and a supposed girlfriend in an Internet scam.
The 48-year-old man wired the money to an online girlfriend in London (http://www.nbcchicago.com/topics?topic=London) who turned out to be fake.
He found out she wasn't real after he called Naperville Police to report she'd been kidnapped.
The man wired the money to banks in Nigeria (http://www.nbcchicago.com/topics?topic=Nigeria), Malaysia (http://www.nbcchicago.com/topics?topic=Malaysia), Endland and the United States (http://www.nbcchicago.com/topics?topic=United+States) over 2 1/2 years, according to the Naperville Sun (http://napervillesun.suntimes.com/3992836-417/man-loses-200k--and-the-girl--in-online-scam.html).

For Facebook, add a secondary e-mail contact under 'Email' so you can choose to reset your password using it if your account is ever hijacked in the future.
For Facebook, go to "Account Security," and check the option to always use a secure connection when possible. This will encrypt your password so that it can't be easily intercepted on public Wi-Fi networks.

I have gotten that scam at least five times now - by email, because I work for a travel site. I never got it by instant message, but I always just say...

"OMG, you were robbed? Don't worry, I've already alerted the police and they are on the way."

I wonder how many people actually fall for this.

(Something similar happens here when scammers call up random numbers)
