This is mine: Started off as a TV Yellow Gibson Melody Maker I got at a Guitar Center sale for $99.

I refinished it with a "rosewood" stain and tung oil. Best $99 I ever spent (on guitars, that is)

Great sounding guitar. I played this guitar one tune
on my album. (Meltdown).

1968 Martin 00-18 purchased for $40.00 in '82.

Someone had spray painted the back of the neck and the headstock silver.

I hand delivered it to the Martin factory for restoration. I got a very cool tour of the place, and I hung out with Dick Boak for awhile. That Martin was my number one acoustic for many, many years. :D

1968 Univox LP copy. I paid $50 in 1970 which included a geniune Gibson case with orange plush interior. Bought it off a hippy who needed money for some LSD. I still have her and the case and she sounds great. I did put on a Gotoh bridge and tailpiece and installed a new nut.

New Burns Cobra w/3 Trisonic Pickups. $225.00 Simply cannot
believe the price to quality ratio of this guitar. If it sold for
$1000+ it would be a steal. Plays like a dream straight off
the wall and has a slew of pickup settings making it incredibly
flexible. This is one guitar that is truly fun to play, and it can
nail the Brian May tones with no effort whatsoever.

oscar shmidt Oe-30 in my more ignorant days i attempted to relic it, put a steve vai evolution in it. well. all thats left is a taped up scratched up body of what once was. but all i ahve to say is that with benson strings, omg you should see the "scalloping" job i did on it. too funny. it sounds amazing though. ironically. i think i might be in love with es-335s

My Danelectro DC3 was $190. It's got a lot of cool jangly, twangy sounds, plays shockingly well, and was pretty much MADE to work with fuzzboxes. On the bridge pickup it turns into the most snarly punked out thing ever, with all three in series it's beyond smooth.

Danelectro U2 reissue. My wife ordered me one when they first came out for a birthday present. Picked it up at Guitar Center when it came in. It was the first copperburst in the Chicago area to my knowledge. Brought it home and took off the neck to adjust the truss rod, put it back together, and was pissed! It had lower action than all my other guitars! I could not belive how well it played. I played others and they were not anywhere near this one. Must have been the right formica on the right day!

It does one thing and does it well. Cool vibe you just can't get from the Tele/Strat/Les Paul crowd.

Best money my wife ever spent.:D

definitely my mid 70's Ibanez Concord. It's a black Gibson Dove copy, plays great, and sounds pretty good for the price.

Best of all, I can just leave it laying around the house so I can play it whenever I get the urge. Probably do about 80% of my home playing on this one.

Hard to beat this one. Bought it when I was in Japan last summer. It's a Yamaha SA-1200S, made sometime between 1979-1984. I think these go for like 800-1000 used, got it for less than half that.

It's not exaclt a $100-200 guitar since you don't get that lucky in Europe, but by European standards a real bargain.

Don't have either piece anymore, but in 1985, I paid $200 for a '65 Fender Deluxe (no reverb) and a wine red Ibanez lawsuit Les Paul copy. Neither was as valuable to me then as they would be now.

My MIM tele is my fave. Bought it used for $250 with case. It was a nice playing and sounding guitar when I bought it, but I sunk another $150 into it and put on a vintage bridge with brass saddles and some used Fralin stock tele pickups and some new pots, jack and an electrosocket. It's my go to guitar.

Picked up this Charvel TX Custom super-duper cheap the other day to use as a beater guitar. It has a solid ash body and the weight is not bad at all. I gave it a refret with 6105's and dropped in some Duncans I had laying around and it is a really nice guitar. Very versatile.

It has to be my Reverend Warhawk 390...

$499 just about everywhere on the planet right now... (except at Guitar Center, where they don't carry Rev's.... LOL)

I just bought it at a local mom-and-pop, and I can't put it down...

Made in Korea, but it doesn't seem to matter anymore where a guitar is made... this one proves it times a million...

$5,000 worth of tone for only $500... oh hell yeah...

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b209/asat4life/Reverend%20Warhawk%20390/ReverendWarhawk390.jpg

Three P-90 pickups, a 5-way pickup selector... volume/tone... the third knob is what they call a "bass contour" control... roll it back and the Rev. gets even thinner for 5 additional distinct sounds from the same 5-way switch... damn....

It would be hard to beat this axe at any price range...

cool reverse headstock, too... and its a set-neck... and the body wood is Korina... and... it's light... and... and... LOL...

My 1986 Squier Telecaster !

It has been my really comfy practice & occasional gigging guitar until I recently bought a MIM Baja. I suppose in turn you could say the Baja is now my favourite 'cheap' guitar, as it ends up in my hands more often than it's expensive sisters !

Don't have a pic of mine, but it's a late 90s California Series Fat Tele. Was great when it was stock, but the addition of a Callaham bridge, Fralin high-output bridge pickup and an old Duncan Alnico II humbucker neck pickup turned it into a killer SuperTele. Probably got ~$600 into it total.

+1. Excellent guitar. (Mine was purple too). I just gave mine to my aspiring guitarist nephew. He's been, by all accounts, playing it non-stop. I'm sure his dad, who bought him the Epiphone SG is not really happy with me right now!

It is one great playing instrument. Tone, feel...everything. I couldn't believe the sound for that price, either. I think I got mine for $129 a couple of years ago.

Wandering through a junk store in Flagstaff Az, I happened upon a Japanese D28 knockoff, for $80. Even with rusty strings and one of those horrid adjustable bridges, it didn't sound too bad, so I bagged it. I was really busy at the time, didn't pay much attention to it for a couple of weeks, finally got around to putting new strings on it and cleaning it up. All this wonderful tone came pouring out, and I looked at it carefully....Solid Brazilian rosewood back and sides, solid tightgrain spruce front, very light, and a solid rosewood neck. Down through the years, I've had the bridge replaced, and did a refret, but still, I've got less than $250 in it, and that wonderful tone just goes on and on. It looks a little beat up, but then, so do I. We get along just fine.

I have three that I think qualify--a Squier Std. Tele with a cheap hardshell case for $50.00, a MIM Strat with a cheap hardshell case for $150.00, and a NIB Gibson Faded Double Cut Les Paul Special I snagged for $330.00...

I have a Fuji Gen-gakki factory made Les Paul from Sam Ash that had 70's Gibson humbuckers (with the logo stamped into the chrome pickup covers), flamed natural amber top bought for $50.00 Sounds great; have used it on a number of recordings and was borrowed by my friend, Producer Gregg Wattenberg, to cut tracks for Five For Fighting's, "America Town" album, which had the hit song, "Superman (It's Not Easy)".

I don't have it anymore, and I'm not sure that they are still as cheap as they were a few years ago, but my vote goes to the G%L ASAT.
I had one of the semi-hollows with the big MFD pickups, and i picked it up for around $600. While this is by no means cheap, the guitar was in many ways on the same level as the Custom Shop stuff I usually buy and pay 3 times more for.
I sold my ASAT to finance another ASAT, but that deal fell thr. The second ASAT was also only $650 or so and was easily the best value for the money ever. It had a thicker neck (a chunky V) which I preferred. Once I missed out on it I was actually so heartbroken that I didn't want anything to do with ASAT's anymore. My loss :)

BTW, on the really cheap guitar front, my vote goes to some of the Fernandes stuff they were doing prior to the late 90's.
I remember playing a $150 J-Bass of theirs which was actually really good by any standards. I also remember their Teles which were every bit as nice as MIJ Fenders going in the $2000 range. I dunno how these held up on the used market, but now that Fernandes is doing their original designs they are nowhere near as good a 'bang for the buck'.

I just picked up a Peavey USA Firenza for $200 to use as a teaching guitar. Young students can be dangerous with their guitars so using my high end stuff was not an option. I've got a Guild/DeArmond Starfire Special that I'm really digging. Cost less than 500, with a great hardshell case. I've also got two excellent little Gretsch Corvettes--a vintage '66 (I think) and a reissue. The reissue was about 460.00 and I upgraded a couple parts bringing it to near 500. my 2013 epiphone lea paul plus top pro ltd cs, desert burst. thanks to a salesman at gc who had a major fubar moment when he rang me up, i walked out with it and a roadrunner hardshell case for $314.28.. not a bad deal in my book for a brand new guitar and case.
play beautifully, and was ridiculously well finished and set up. it didn't play like the other epis i played that day, it felt and sounded like it was in a different dimension, i think i lucked out and got a 'good' one..

USA Dean Cadillac brand new for $200.

rooster.Nice! I wanted a custom shop korina Cadillac with a maple top but it was too rich for my blood. My '81 Z is one of my favorites.

My best cheapie is an '85 MIJ '52 Reissue Telecaster for $450. Tone to die for.

But if you consider "cheap" to be under $1K it's my '06 American Deluxe Stratocaster QMT HSS. Locking tuners, LSR nut, ebony board, S-1 pickup selector system, and flame maple top. The neck carve is spectacular and the ebony board and medium jumbo frets make bends a joyful experience. $850 used in mint condition.

Okay, when I read the title of the OP, I took it to mean "cheap" guitars, as "low cost when new". Am I wrong? In any case, I don't see "cheap" guitar equaling "I got an expensive guitar for a giveaway price", or "I bought a vintage ______ 30 years ago for $200. If that's the criteria, well then my "cheapest" killer guitar was my 51 Epiphone, since it was a gift from my wife an I didn't pay anything for it. Can't get any cheaper than that, right?

But, if the spirit of this thread is truly "cheap" guitars, I'd say the best is my 87 MIJ 57 Reissue Strat, which I bought new for $500. I've owned a fair number of US Fender Strats and Partscasters, including my first, a 1970 model bought new (actually, that was somewhat cheap, but maybe not by today's standards -- cost me $250 plus my Jazzmaster in 1970), and the MIJ RI is easily one of the most vintage sounding Strats I've ever owned. That said, it hasn't really been all that cheap over the years, since it's been refretted and all the electronics have been upgraded.

I tend to go for " cheap traditional"...that is,stuff that guys started off on 50 years ago ,then discarded ..........but now it's "vintage"....stuff like Harmony Bobkats & Silhouettes . You could get em for 100 bucks or less until about 6/7 years ago . Luckily ,I got in on the ground floor o' that. Very cool guitars when you set em up

Im enjoying the Epiphone Wilshire quite a bit these days , the gloss white one routed for full size hums. I put a 57 classic in the neck and a Fralin p-92 in the bridge , killa !

Then I bought a Terada built 83 Washburn Hawk with a Kaehler and push pots on both Volume controls for $200 The Gibbys went under the bed. And on the Hawk the previous owner loaded it with Rio Grande Half breed pickups.

I have a cheap Peerless acoustic archtop that I think sounds very distinct and different. Don't know how good it is, but it's fun to play.

I have great hopes for the Korean Epiphone SG I picked up a few weeks ago. At the moment it's in pieces without electronics, but I'm hoping to put some bucker-sized P90s in it, and change the pots and stuff soon.

My current favourite is my Squier VM Jazzmaster, which I have customized slightly. StayTrem bridge, which was a huge upgrade, and I have simplified the electronics to just the pickup switch and volume and tone. Also, I got a mint green pickguard from Terrapin.

I don't have a photo account, but here is a DropBox link to a pic of it.

I know what you mean, but I'd had it for a long time, it was very dinged-up (the one in the pic is someone else's), I didn't have a black guitar, and I didn't want to try my first re-finish on a more expensive guitar.
Also, you see a lot of U2s in that finish and IMO it actually looks a little dull in person.

I had one of the lowest-end Yamaha Tele knockoffs with two humbuckers and a three-way switch. Single vol and tone. Someone had painted it with burgundy wall paint. Ugly as sin, but had a fantastic flat, fast neck and snappy tone. Got it for $75. Should never have sold it for the playability and good tone.

$59 (in a good guitar shop back in 2000, which should tell you how much the vintage market has changed) for a Kay-branded Harmony Bobcat with a single pickup. Don't know how to describe the finish; it was almost bare wood but with the slightest "burst" of reddish-brown around the edges. Very, very thin lacquer if there was any at all.

That thing through a Peavey Delta Blues 210 was vintage greaser-rock HEAVEN. I could get all the rockabilly and honky-tonk tone I could imagine out of that guitar.

I eventually sold it for more than I paid, but not much more. I kick myself sometimes because I could probably ask beau coup money these days. The guitar was factory-new and had not a ding, scratch, chip or wear mark on it. The original tuners didn't even have any rust or grunge in the gears. It's like I was able to go back to 1957 or whatever and pick it up brand new.

Miss that thing.

Yup - My partscaster - it's got a on old maple squire II neck that's been to hell and back (including my own "luthier" work). It started life as my first guitar in early 90's. I've changed it up a million times, new body even lately, but it always sounds good, especially the bridge humbucker, always silky smooth distortion.

Would have to be my Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster. Picked it up new for $299 when they first came out and aside from a $15 swap to a mint guard, it's stayed stock. Maybe I got an exceptionally good one but I was honestly shocked by the quality and how well it plays and sounds. I really nails the fuzz tone I was looking for (it is a J Mascis sig model after all). Even though I came very close to pulling the trigger on an Aztec gold '65 reissue a couple months ago, it's suppressed my major jazzmaster gas for a fraction of the cost.

I have several cheapies I like, probably the cheapest really good all-arounder is a Washburn MG200 Special - its a Korean HSS Strat I picked up for about $100. Others in the cheap but great category - my Kay E100 (for slide only - $40), and Peavey Patriot (about $200).

I'd say that the 30s through the 50s were the golden age of great acoustic guitars, the 50s were the golden age of electrics, and now is the golden age for good inexpensive electric guitars. Almost everything being made patterned on a classic design on a CNC machine is a decent guitar, especially with some easy mods, and they're cranking them out by the hundreds of thousands. I could start from ground zero any day, take a week to check on the used offerings in my town, and be ready for the gig for well under $200 for a guitar.
