I just made a trade for a Mad Professor MP 101. I trade my Two Rock J2 head for the MP. Never played one but heard some clips and it sounded really good. Just wondering if anybody has played one and if so what should I expect.

Thanks,

Chuck

I heard one live. Very nice. Did not get the chance to play it myself. Lots of adjustments can be made with the knobs

The way the one I heard was setup was kind of Marshall meets Dumble IIRC

Tested one at the shop a few weeks ago.
It sounded very nice, but it wasn't jaw-dropping experience, especially for the money :dunno

I heard one on line. Obviously one cannot make a balnket statement about anything heard on line, but the ultimate sound reaction about any amp is in the ears of the beholder, and player.

I thought they offered a lot of tonal options, but I would have to play one live to make a final determination.

At the risk of stating the obvious .... would it not have been an idea to have tried it before making the trade?!!

I had one when I was helping them some. I have a video and MP3 of it if you're interested? The amp was great, would have love to kept it.

man, you simply won't regret the trade!!!!
I play a MP101 for almost two years and I can certify it is an awsome amp. the first thing you should do is change the tubes inside - in mine I have all mullards ecc83 and el34. it makes a BIG difference! then, you have to get accustomed to the eq section. it works exceptionlay well and you have to know what you are doing in order to get the tone you're after. simply by manipulating the eq (especially the mids) you can get a wide range of sounds from marshallesque (with mids from 0 to 3) to dumblesque (mids from 5 to 10). it is also important to have proper loudspeakers that can best represent the tone you want...
will post soon some samples about the tone possibilities of this monster!

I think I played that model MP at NAMM at the Heritage Guitar booth this year. It may have been the Old School 21.
If so, let me put it this way:

Wow what a great idea can't believe I didn't think of that! Do you really think I wouldn't have tried it if I could have found one close by? Give me a break. Problem is this is an extremely rare amp and it isn't something you can run down to your local Guitar Center to try out.

Anyways doesn't matter because I got the amp last week and it absolutely smokes. I love it. It is the clearest sound gain I have heard. The note to note separation even at high gain levels is incredible. I love this amp. Jim you would love this amp. It doesn't have as much gain as the SLO but has some of the same characteristics.

jim.s - sorry, I don't understand DIBS...
if it's bad, I think you need to reconsider (if it's of any use for yourself)...

DIBS means I'd be first in line if it were up for sale. I was joking but it's a compliment.

BTW, the one I played at NAMM was the Mad Professor OS21 Old School21 and not the MP101.

haaaa! I got it now. yep, the OS21 is also a very cool amp, but the mp101 is absolutely outstanding. it still has much less press and talk than lots of other amps...

How are they volume wise? Earblowing loud to get good sounds or does it do reasonably well at lower volumes (yes I know it is 101w)??

The master volume is the best I have heard. The tone even at club levels is extremely open and clear sounding even at high gain levels.

exactly! (of course, at low volumes you won't hear that well the speaker characteristics...)
but the main plus of the amp is the tonal richness you get and the awsome separation of notes equally when playing clean and overdriven.

That's what I perceived with the OS21 combo.

Glad we hear things the same way. That is exactly what I love about the MP 101 is the note seperation even at high gain levels. I think the reason there isn't alot of talk about these amps is that they are very rare. I don't know many people who have them. Also must people that have them are probably playing them and not wasting their time on a guitar forum. LOL

I sold mine last year to a gentlemen on this forum. Maybe he can pipe up.

No need to cop an attitude, even if you couldn't try it, I agree that it is kind of silly to be asking this after you have already traded for the amp rather than before. Glad you are enjoying it.

Ok Chuck. All is left is for you to give us a full review ;)

Seriously, be good to hear what you think after a while with it.

Well I am not the best at describing tone but the MP 101 is a keeper. The overdrive is the best crunch singing lead tone I have heard for this style of amp. It crunches like no other but keeps the note to note seperation better than any amp I have owned. It doesn't sound exactly like a Marshall but has Marshall tendencies. The crunch is more immediate and more open sounding than my Germino Lead 55LV. The Germino however has more of a mid presence. I like the MP and Germino but they sound different. I can't say one is better than the other just different.

The clean channel on the MP is really nice. I have it set up with the gain at 10:00 so it is really clean sounding with just a touch of hair. I would say the only thing that would make the clean better would be a tube reverb. I have a Holy Grail I use with it which works perfectly. If you increase the gain on the clean channel it morphs into the best plexi tones around. I stumbled onto this amp in a trade and am so glad I made the trade I absolutely love this amp.

Wish I could make some clips.

I adore my MP101. Yes, a tube reverb would definitely make the cleans better but they are pretty much the best I have ever had without it too. Its an extremely loud amp. The gain is just right for me. It certainly doesn't have gain available like my SLO but it gets heavy enough for rock and roll - thats for certain - very plexi like.

I use a Kot, SHOD, Catalyst (for fuzz) and a MK4.23 boost and the 101 just eats them up. This amp rocks, PERIOD!!!

Having owned the MP for about 6 weeks now. I can say...

Not often do I buy into hype but I will honestly say that my 101 is one of the few amps I own or have owned that lives up to everything I've heard, and is even better than I expected. This amp is just an amazing piece of gear and I'm fortunate to have it.

Bjorn. Jukka, Harri, and everyone at MP has been extremely helpful. Bjorn and I exchange emails often and he is easily one of the best in terms of customer support. He is always sure to return any questions with comprehensive answers and makes sure I understand them. I cannot say enough about Mad Professor and their products.
