View Full Version : New Lentzes: P90 vs. T (help me spend my money)

I'm thinking about getting one of the new Lentzes but can't make up my mind between the T/P90 version (with a Tele-type bridge and P90 in the neck) or the one with a more traditional Tele-type layout.
I am one of the few people who enjoys Tele-type neck pickups, and if I get one, it would probably be the only guitar I had with one (I'd probably sell my Tele in favor of the Lentz). On the other hand, I know from experience how good a P90 in the neck sounds.
Whaddaya think? And no, "buy one of each" isn't a realistic alternative.:D

lentz's new p90 has to be heard/played to believe. it's an amazing sounding pickup esp in the neck position. i have one of his T style guitars and of course those pickups (in his guitar) sound amazing as well. but i think this new p90 is something realy special. cant go wrong either way, but if it's gonna be the "one" guitar you have, i would recommend the p90/T... but thats just my opinion.
Whichever way you go, the switching system with the Gibby 3-way switch and a separate volume for each pickup would be more versatile.
I have to say Scott does a great "T" style bridge pup. I'd love to hear what the "T" /P-90 combination sounds like. That said I have one eack "T" ,& "S"... so I put my deposit on the 2 p-90 version.

I hadn't thought about that hardware on the double P-90...might be cool!

he's doing either dual p90, p90 neck/tele bridge, or traditional T pickup configurations.
body is either super light resonant ash, or alder (if he can find some good alder, otherwise he wont make it)
neck wood is maple with maple board or rosewood board. every now and then he comes across awesome brazilian rosewood, but none right now.
most the traditional colors
and they're doing binding too which looks killer on bursts.
the 3 knob (vol, vol, tone) configuration will be killer for versatility. the tradition 3way with vol/tone good for guys that set it and forget it.
i played the guitar loud and hard all afternoon, just lost track of time. truly in a class of it's own. no p90 guitar i've ever played sounds like this!

It's going to be a long wait until next Thursday.
I heard Buddy Whittington put this puppy through its paces a few days ago, and he approved. :dude

I think the body shape is fine, but I have to say that I've not been thrilled with any of the pickguards, with the exception of the one on Buddy's red Lentz...

When I order mine I'll be going with P-90's and that's only because I already have Lentz guitars with B-kaster style p'ups. If you don't have a Lentz I say go for the B-kaster in the bridge and P-90 in the neck. Either way you'll thank yourself and Lentz for years to come.

I was quite taken by the blue one with the T in the back and P-90 in the neck. The in between tone is phenominal, and the B-kaster pickup in the rear is stellar as always. I keep trying to convince myself it overlaps with my T style, but the in between and P-90 in the neck tones make it a completely different guitar.
Then again the P-90 in the bridge is pretty happening. :dude

I loved the clips Lance did with the blue one. Great tone with that P90 neck. I like the body shape and pickguard on the orange one Buddy was playing best. That guitar with a P90 neck and the Bkaster bridge would do it for me.

I finally got to meet Scott and his son last week when I was passing through San Marcos California. I had already played the blue one with the tele bridnge and p 90 in the neck
I gotta tell you guys, I don't speak up about much anymore on this forum but I have to tell you that the guitars that the Lentz family is turning out right now are the best that i have ever played.
My main guitar for a long time has been a blue Lentz esquire style guitar. People actually will come up and comment about the tone of that guitar live and that had never happened to me before I owned that instrument.
Now I have played the new one extensively and I have to say that the new Lentz guitars have bested the older ones in function, design, playability and tone.
That is a big deal considering how much I love that Esquire style piece.
Scott is a real gentleman, his son even fixed my watch while I was there that I had thought I was going to have to send back to Brietling. Two brilliant guys turning out some incredible guitars...I only see things getting bigger and better for Scott.
I may end up with one of each...
The first one I am getting will be the tele/p90 job in Round Up Orange with binding...should be lots of fun.
If you have never met Scott, you owe it to yourself to drop by and say hello if you are near the shop...
I you have never played a Lentz guitar you are really missing something special.
The new layout with volume for each pickup allows for so many tonal combinations. Those clips I did were done in my living room at low volume just to show the nuances and shades that you can achieve just by putting the toggle in the middle and playing with the volume controls. It really is quite amazing, and the neck P90 is stong without sounding too muddy.
I wish that someone could get Jeff Beck to try a Lentz....he would freak out on this guitar as I know how much he works his volume and tone controls.
As I said this new guitar is a step above and a whole new generation of tone for Lentz. I can't say enough good things about these new guitars...
As always light weight resonate, and toneful.

What is the neck size on a Lentz guitar? As compared to a Suhr guitar is the Lentz neck an even C slim, medium or huge? Does anyone know? Does anyone at Lentz Guitars have a measurement they can share?
The one I had was a Huge C. Think Nocaster with a little more depth and a little less sholder.
studio8000
06-18-2005, 11:31 AM
they're all pretty much variations of a Huge C. some he'll do a soft V shape, but they're all big. big fat necks... but comfortable as heck. plus they're light and sound great!
I may not be 100% correct but I think Scott only does big necks for the tone they help produce.
oh, I have no doubt that Lentz has reasons for building with those necks
I prefer playing guitars that fit my hands perfectly. Since alot of tone is in the hands, having a guitar that fits someone right is part of making tone happen. Fortunately there are other guitar-makers who make guitars just as well as Lentz (namely Suhr, for one)
I would imagine that I'm not the only potential customer Lentz is missing out on by not offering a few options, but I get the feeling that Lentz is OK with that. And thats OK by me. We all gotta do what we gotta do and what feels right
I agree with ya. I have a CS Strat with a U shaped Nocaster neck that I might be letting go. I prefer V-necks. That Nocaster neck shape has way too much shoulder for me. It does make it harder for me to solo, however if only played open chords that neck would be the best for me.

I'll have to check with Scott regarding the new necks, We have been messing around with a size right around .890 at the first fret which is still our same shape and very comfortable but a bit slimmer.
B.T.W. we have some new pictures up.

I own five Lentzes, including one of the new prototypes. The new neck, which Ian refers to, is (to me) the most comfortable. Scott told me it's his new 'standardized' neck. Essentially it's a very soft V to around the 8th or 9th fret where it tapers to a C.
All of my first four Lentzes have slightly different necks, ranging from a Med/Lg C to an eXtra beefy C. Although all comfortable in their own right, the new neck nails it for me.
For Suhr fans, it's somewhere between a 56 Big V and an Even C Huge. The Suhr starts at .880 and the Lentz at .890. Scott sticks to a 9.5 radius and 6105 frets, real similar in feel to Suhr's 6105.
Nut width is 1 5/8" but it feels a tad roomier than than my Suhr's 1 5/8" neck and a lot roomier than a Grosh 1 5/8" neck. Visualize a neck width between a 1 5/8" and 1 11/16". Whatever the exact measurement is, it feels just right (again, for me).
The big thing that makes a Lentz a Lentz is his matching of pups and capacitors to wood. I wish I was a poet so I could do justice to describing his P90s. Scott has performed the same magic on these new pups that he is famous for on his T style B_Kasters.

We often call the nut width 1 5/8 (1.625) but in reality we make it 1.650 which is about the thickness of a credit card wider.

both of my new Lentz's (dual p90/ p90-broadcaster) are 3 knob guitars. they're so versatile. the tone is just sickening good. when i have more time, i gotta take some pics of mine and post em... the p90-broadcaster guitar is a beautiful two tone with binding. amazing!

maybe I'm crazy but I have been thinking about a 3 p90 model with a 5 way switch. Kind of like a strat but 'oh so much better'
I got the unbound 3 tone sunburst model (2 broadcaster pickups) and this is definitely the best guitar I have ever had. The tone control and Scott's wiring give that guitar so many sounds with all 3 pickup positions.
I saw a cat named Tom Faulkner a couple yrs ago...his guitar player had a tele style guitar with 3 P-90's ....don't know what kinda switch he had but the guitar sounded great !!
