Just when I thought it was looking to be easy going the rest of the year we are on the eve of the worst storm of the season.
DANGEROUS MULTIFACETED AND POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING WINTER STORM TAKING AIM ON REGION...
* TIMING...SNOW WILL INCREASE IN INTENSITY AND BECOME HEAVY AT TIMES SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 80 TUESDAY AFTERNOON...GRADUALLY SPREADING NORTH INTO NORTHERN ILLINOIS BY TUESDAY EVENING.
SNOW...HEAVY AT TIMES...WILL CONTINUE TUESDAY NIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING. SNOW SHOWERS WILL CONTINUE NEAR LAKE MICHIGAN IN NORTHEAST LLINOIS WEDNESDAY MORNING...SHIFTING INTO NORTHWEST INDIANA DURING THE AFTERNOON. NORTHEAST WINDS OF 25 TO 40 MPH WITH STRONGER GUSTS WILL RESULT IN BLIZZARD CONDITIONS DEVELOPING TUESDAY EVENING AND CONTINUING THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT HOURS.
* ACCUMULATIONS...SNOW ACCUMULATIONS IN EXCESS OF A FOOT ARE EXPECTED OVER MUCH OF THE WATCH AREA FROM TUESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. LOCALIZED TOTALS IN EXCESS OF 18 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE...ESPECIALLY NEAR THE LAKE.
* HAZARDS...WHITE-OUT CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED AT TIMES TUESDAY NIGHT AS VERY HEAVY SNOW AND STRONG WINDS RESULT IN BLIZZARD CONDITIONS. SNOWFALL RATES OF AT LEAST 2 TO 3 INCHES PER HOUR ARE POSSIBLE...ESPECIALLY WITH ANY THUNDERSTORMS THAT OCCUR.
* IMPACTS...CONDITIONS WILL RAPIDLY DETERIORATE FROM NORTH TO SOUTH ACROSS THE REGION TUESDAY AFTERNOON...WITH TRAVEL LIKELY BECOMING VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE AT TIMES TUESDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING. SNOW IS EXPECTED TO FALL SO HEAVILY AT TIMES TUESDAY NIGHT THAT PLOWS WILL BE UNABLE TO KEEP UP WITH THE SNOW...WITH MANY SIDE STREETS AND UNTREATED ROADS BECOMING IMPASSABLE.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A BLIZZARD WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR FALLING AND BLOWING SNOW WITH STRONG WINDS AND EXTREMELY POOR VISIBILITIES.
THIS CAN LEAD TO WHITEOUT CONDITIONS AND MAKE TRAVEL VERY DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING.
LISTEN TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR YOUR LOCAL MEDIA FOR THE LATEST UPDATES ON THIS SITUATION.

once you get past the 1st 2 weeks of January its considered over the hump. The trend starts upward and the deep cold starts to disappear.

I remember even significant snowfalls on LI to melt within a few days......we're surrounded by water which usually means rain but this year the jet stream headed south. The ground peeked through briefly after the Dec 26th storm, one weekend it was 50 degrees. Our totals are around 55" so far when we average 22" a season. I'm hearing bad things about this upcoming storm, there's no room to put the snow anymore!
Shove it out into the ocean!

Well, it looks like tomorrow night will be the storm peak (predicted weather) l would guess Ohare will have moderate delays. So getting here will be a breeze, but getting out might be fun.

According to the map above I'm on the 18" but close to the 20" line. Hopefully it will be 18" because 20" would just be insulting. Somebody started a thread stating "ever shovel snow off your roof?". I was thinking maybe me on Wednesday.

They have a huge advisory for us in central IL. We got nothing but freezing rain/sleet today, and there is quite a thick little layer of ice built up. We are supposed to get 12-18"+ inches of snow on top of that.

Whats really funny is the buying spree at the grocery stores right now. I swear people buying shovels and ice scrapers like its going out of style.
After 55 years out in the western burbs I have survived every storm as if its just another day.
The news channels here create the hysteria. Remember the big ice storm in 66/67's?
Now that one was tough in some area's but only due to the lack of electricity. We did without for 9 days.

Got some snow, about an inch, early afternoon and around 5:30 we got about a half an inch of snow cone stuff. Now for the dump tomorrow! My wife bought a used Kubota BX2200 last year and it's got a loader bucket on the front and 4 wheel drive, so I can plow out our large , wind exposed, driveway. I think I've got enough bourbon in the house if I get stuck here tomorrow.

Right now out here near Dekalb/NIU area we are getting a dusting of flurries but the winds are kicking up pretty good out of the north north/east. The real fun starts as soon as the wins shift.

the thing about this storm is that it will affect 100 million people, this thing is huge and will go from Texas to New England. They are predicting 60 mile an hour winds along Lake Muchigan on Wednesday! That is AFTER getting dumped with up to 20 inches of snow

I remember the big snow of '67 really well. It's where John Coleman the weatherman made his rep. He was the only person to predict it.
I lived through 50 years of snow in Chicago. Yes, the media makes a big deal out of it. Of course, the media makes a big deal out of everything. What always made me laugh was that people acted as though it was their first storm......every time there was a big snow. I never understaood what the big deal was.
Within hours the streets are clear and you basically go about your normal business. I mean you can usually get to the grocery store while it's snowing, or a couple hours into it when the plows and crews have had a chance to attack the streets. What's the issue?

I don't get it either. I moved from Los Angeles to the area back in 1999.
EVERY Winter the people at work start freaking out about the "Big" storm. Every year it's the "biggest storm ever".
I reminded them today that they do this every year. Last year it was the "big ice storm".
I commute from WI to Elgin IL and have never missed a day of work.
People who've lived here all their lives and live within 10 miles call in and say they can't make it.

Right now Near Dekalb/NIU We are getting very fine snow, light accumulation but lots of blowing over on the country roads.
Pretty cold because of the wind chill and high humidity.
21°F Cloudy Feels like: 10°
We are downgraded to a blizzard watch now, several hours ago it was a severe blizzard warning.

Yeah, I know where Sharon is. That is indeed a little hike to Elgin, no doubt! I lived in Madison for quite some time, too. I'm now living at the cusp of the northwoods of WI these days, so we're looking at just a few inches of snow at the most. That's a good thing compared to what you'll be getting.
Can I say?......I don't like winter very much? If I didn't have a wife of Norwegian heritage, I honestly believe that I'd be living in a much warmer climate.

Illinois is is for the Big one,,,Ohio not so bad,,,Can you help us in Ill. or Ohio with this dish?
Looks like Ohio may get a good hit of the snow/carnage.
However, I bought a 4lb beef round bottom roast that I want to cook. I know it;s not that large, but should hold us for a few days. I have a gas stove and water heater as well as a insert in the fireplace(REAAAAALLL LOW ON WOOD).
If we lose power we can sleep in the kitchen with the oven on low with a C02 detector and a smoke detector.
Can anybody give me a a nice recipe for the beef bottom roast recipe for a super slow cook to heat the kitchen and a great meal?
I have done the usual google search and wnat to to try a TGP recipe from somebody here...Guitar players are awesome cooks from what I have read and have tried several here and have been very happy,
What can you you suggest for this cut of meat? I have almost all the sides needed,
I will give a full blown review when it's finished...Don't wory, I am easily pleased.
Also, send me other recipies with odd ball canned stuff...I have salmon and canned tuna....

Dang, 90, I can't help you if your power goes out, but why not do that cooking on an outdoor grill if you have one? If an inch of ice hits your house with another 20 iches of snow to boot, you can always stand outside cooking in your down parkas while dreaming of a Packers win in the Super Bowl.

True dat. I'm near you guys too. Got lazy & skipped grocery-shopping this past weekend figuring I'll just stop on the way home from work last night. At Dominick's you'd think the apocolypse was upon us - long lines, produce section decimated, people buying water, etc.
Geez, people, it's winter & we live in the Chicago area - we get bad weather. But I'm pretty sure we'll be able to shop again in a couple of days...

I hear they are declaring it at a Level 3 snow emergency here in Central IL in the coming hour or so. So anyone out driving can be ticketed/impounded.
I drove to the post office which is about 10 miles one way, and it took me almost an hour due to the conditions and people who can't drive. I swear common sense is no longer here in the states.
I don't even see many official snow plows out on the road, I think they are preparing them for later and when they shut down the roads.

Yeah, I think it's alot worse here. It's a heavyyyy strong mix of huge snow and sleeting/ice balls LOL.
I think the thing you have to remember is in in Central IL, it's mostly corn fields and very flat, so there is no protection from the wind and everything else so that makes visibility much worse.
I do think they are overreacting though.

Count me as another happy condo dweller who will be happy to let someone else deal with the snow removal over the next few days!

I know the feeling about corn belt area's. Out our back door is corn fields. I just went outside to move the 15 inch drift off the front porch. The wind being mostly out of the north our whole front side drifts in.
No sooner did I get the steps and porch down, it just drifted right back.
I have about an 18-20 inch drift in front of my garage doors.
This stuff is especially fine and dry here, very fine packed powder and fairly heavy!
That wind is outright brutal!
I took pictures yesterday at the warning announcement, and just took a few more 24 hours later. I'll post them as soon as I get a few more.
I might actually gas up the snow blower the 1st time this year! Up until now, I have been hand shoveling our 3 car driveway just for the great exercise value.

It started snowing about 2 hours ago (NW of O'Hare) and although they're little flakes, they're coming down fast and furious. Probably have about another 1 1/2" on top of the 2" we got last night, so far. As they said, the snow will be continuous for the next 24 hrs, 1-2"/hr could easily get us to >20"......At least I bought my groceries already.

Did you prep your dwelling in the last couple of days???? Did you put stryofoam against the windows or other things to insulate??????????????? What about your pets??? Guitars????
An insulated hooded sweatshirt and sweats, once I get moving I am like a furnace and anything more than that I would be soaked.
Its really not all that cold here, upper teens at worst but the wind is gusting to at least 50mph.
Trying to do anything else tonight is just a waste of effort with these winds. I went out a bit ago and got gas for the blower and the roads out here are nearly empty.
Those who shouldn't aren't and those who think they can are still driving around without their headlights! In white out conditions??? haha

Ugg, lots of roads closing out here now.
Rte 47 north and south of me closed,
I just drove from 47 & rte 38 into Geneva and its really tough driving. Total white outs for in excess of 100 yards in spots. My poor car, the snow packed into the horn so tight its 100% muted now!
Lots of cars in the ditches from loosing their way in the white outs, really makes it tricky.

Seriously folks, I'm starting to get a little jealous. So far this year (SW Washington State.) we have only had 1 dusting of snow. Although I did appreciate the sunshine we had today... well nevermind. I'll take the sun.

Just a mite east of Galena, Ill., hasn't been all that big a deal. Maybe 4"-6" just by looking. Great service at the steakhouse tonight. :) Kinda windy though...

Not much accumulation in my back yard, its simply blowing to hard.

Yup, the wind is insane - just howling. Gusting so bad the accumulation to this point is fairly modest. Visibility is very bad just looking out my front door.
Quite a lot has gusted up to my garage doors - at the same time I can see bare asphalt; the wind just keeps it moving...

It's snowing pretty good over here in SWMI, the winds are on their way here from Chicago. From the storm, we can get 12-18" then the Lake Effect Snow Machine kicks on and we could end up with well over 2'. I'm more worried about the blowing snow, it's all open fields around me, everything is going to end up around the house.
I think I'm more pissed I can't take my road trip to Sweetwater for my new Mesa TA-30 tomorrow.

Okay, not a ton of heavy snow per se here in the north suburbs, but the snow drifts in my driveway are already well above my mailbox. It's now official that I won't be going to work tomorrow. Glad I bought a case of Miller Lite on the way home today.

Well, here in the NW burbs, there's between 6-8" except some places the accumulation is being blown away, so it's deceptive. I learned from the blizzard of NYE 98-99, I brought the shovel in the house and have cleared the snow from the back step so I don't get snowed in again. So far, have had to clear it 3 times since 6:30PM as it begins to cover the bottom of the door. There's thunder and lightning. Winds have calmed from 60mph to 40mph gusts, but the news says we're not halfway through this yet. :thud
Lights flickered once, keeping my fingers crossed; 79,000 have lost electricity so far.....

The road closings are getting bad out west especially once you hit rte 47.
The main road in and out for us closed about an hour ago so its looking like a snow day.
Its still blowing as hard now as it has all day, gusts upwards of 45mph and white out conditions.
Our poor puppy, ever see a 18lb Yorkiepoo try to take a dump in a 45mph wind with snow and sleet?
Poor guy blew over twice in mid loaf. But he is a tough little trooper pooper, hung in there like a Dane!

This wind is something else - sustained @ 30mph. Haven't seen a lot of snow yet, but it's coming.

I don't think many people are going anywhere tomorrow. The way the wind is whipping the snow around, there is no way the plows are going to be able to keep up. I shoveled my driveway after I got home from work tonight, but already with the wind drift I've got about 2 feet on my driveway again. If I had a car parked outside, it would be half burried by now.

So far it appears as though we're at the very northern edge of the storm, so it's looking good for us so far. However, many meteorologists seem to have varying opinions as to how hard we'll be hit.

My wife and I went to cover my organic garden. I am not trying to compare, but we are having freakish weather. It took us an hour to do a 10 minute job. We were having microbursts where the wind got wicked and kept yanking the sheets from the clips. Had to lean garbage barrels, lawn chairs, wood , bricks etc against them to secure them. Point is we are having bizzare weather for us and it will be below 30 in my area. TO us its like a blizzard.

Its 4 am Im 30 min south of Milwaukee and were still getting pummeled.
I havent seen snow like this in my lifetime here. Its like a Rocky mountain storm down low. I cant see the road in front of the house anymore and the drifts are 3 feet.
Its like every square inch of the air is full of flakes which would normally just fall to the ground but its driven down and swept sideways at times..in the wind at like 4o mph. Ive got nothing to gauge this by but its awesome.

After 25 minutes clearing a drift to get out of the house & another 45 minutes trying to get to the corner of my street I concede for the morning.
Mother nature has won this round. Not a plow in sight and the only traffic I have seen so far was a police SUV following a snowmobile on the only exit route/rd.
Far west has been hit hard due to blowing and drifting. Our front entrance way is drifted 5 feet solid up the door. The garage has a 4+ feet drift but does not hit the door at all so I was able to get to the driveway after shoveling a path..
Edit, BTW
This is not as bad as the 1967 storm due to the lack of 3/4 inch of ice.

8 AM - 17+ inches down - one more snow plume left to go - maybe another inch or two - top 5 storm for Chicago. It'll take the better part of the day to dig out of here. Cold as hell ans windy, too.

Ahh, we just got our cable TV & internet back a few minutes ago. It dropped about 10 minutes after my last post.
They are still clearing 60 cars stranded out on rte 47 about 8 miles north of me. Snowmobile evacuating drivers stuck over 10 hours.
This has not been as bad as I have ever seen, but its been no fun either.
Edit, we had furnace problems last night about 11pm, it appears the wind was soo strong that it caused down flow to the furnace and kept it from lighting? Most definitively we will be having a tech out just to check it over.
It happened twice yesterday but has been fine ever since.

Chicago gets all the glory due to the high population, but get out in the far burbs where the wind was really blowing and it was equally as bad or worse.
About 8 miles directly north from me over 75 cars(over 100 people) were stranded for more hours than the people on the LSD in Chi.

At around 10am yesterday (while our TV & internet were out) A caller to WGN radio was calling to try and find someone to help because nobody had been there yet.
He called Pingree Grove, got no answer at all.
Called Kane County Emergency number, They said Call IDOT (Illinois Dept Of Trans)
He Called IDOT, they told him call Pingree Grove!
Finally The Kane county snowmobile club came to the rescue.

You can see my apartment from that photo! Outside of my building the wind was so strong it was impossible to cross the street. I'll try to attach a short iphone video of people trying to get home. The girl in black ended up blown out in Lincoln Park. I stopped recording and went to help the two others back to shelter.

I remember lots of snow there growing up in Suffolk.
Yesterday you were warmer than here in Texas though.

Long underwear, wool socks, sweaters, pull overs a huge jacket, a pull over head mask, good gloves, man they could die dressed like they wore. I like the shot of the one bending over at the curb, desperately bending for warmth, crazy. I'd of gotten electric socks!
Again, nocomparison, but in Phoenix its 30 ish at 9 am. This is freak weather and of course we have a full sunny day.

The gal in black bending over by the curb wasn't bending because she was cold - she was trying to keep from falling over and getting blown into the street. There is a wind tunnel between the two buildings that makes for an unbelievable wind - but only for about 60 feet. It knocked down the signs and street lights. I tried repeatedly (it was fun!) to try and make it to the next building, but it was impossible! I could either get down on the ground, or I would be blown out into Lincoln Park.
