What are the differences between a Baker B1 and a Baker junior?

Are they just cosmetic or are they sonic as well? Being that I never had the pleasure of seeing one up close the differences just look cosmetic ...........thankx

The B1 is a carved top and the Jr. is a flat top. Not much difference sonically IMO (I have seen Gene say the same thing). That being said, it is hard to compare 2 guitars unless they are exactly the same in other respects (PUPs, frets, bridge, board, etc.). Even then, differences between particular pieces of wood may have more of a difference. Tough to tell.

I used to think that the Jrs were some of the best bargains around.

Obviously, it depends on the guitar..but the main things are...

1. Carved top vs Flat top
2. Binding vs no binding
3. Block/Crowns vs dot inlays
4. AAAA vs AAA maple top

Gene did make some tricked out Jrs but most of them adhere to the above differences. Also...I have never seen a Jr with an ebony board, but have seen a bunch of B1s with them.

Edited to add that I agree with the above poster. The differences are mostly cosmetic. I have owned a few Jrs and they were uniformly excellent guitars, and every bit the players that my B1s are.

First off it seems pretty reasonable for a Baker.........but is Gene Baker in Bed with Ed!!? Say it isn't so? I actually wanted a Baker..........:(

Thats not a real Baker.

Sapele body, scarfed headstock, and a glazed doughnut finish. I bet it costs him less than $200 to have those made in asia!

Yup...thats an import. I believe that these are made in Korea. I have played a few, and while they may be decent entry level guitars...they are in no way, shape, or form, on the level of an original Baker.

Let me clearify one thing, Gene is not in bed with Ed!!!! The BJ was our budjet model ala LP Junior. A lot of people said it was the best value guitar since it played and had the balls of a B1 but was about a third less in price. I preferd the ones with P-90s.

Gene didn't let ER use his name, Ed bought it during the liquidation auction when Baker went bandrupt. Really lame of ER, to be honest.

Unfortunately Baker guitars went out of business and Ed Roman purchased the Baker name in the ensuing auction.

Gene still makes guitars under the Fine Tuned Instruments moniker...
