Dudes,

Last week I bought a 1982 Gibson ES 175 that I really love. It has a mahogany neck, back and sides so it's not the average ES 175. I tried out several ES 175s and it was easily the best sounding one in the store. Actually the best sounding one I ever played! Woody and mellow.

Nice tracks! And nice 175. It looks to be in great condition too. I don't know if mine sounds as good as yours does because I'm no where near that level of playing over changes. Mine's a bit different b/c it's the antique finish (which has maple sides) and it's a later model (2000). I thought about getting one from 1978-1982 and probably should have, but this one came along and seemed like a good deal. Anyway, looks like you're enjoying your new 175.

Sweet axe Dick! The tone is gorgeous! I loved the lines in How Insensative. Fantastic work.... Nice tritone licks in IGR....

What was your setup for that recording? That's the best sounding 175 I've heard in a long time. Got me to post here after lurking forever. I'd be interested in what you use live with that guitar too. Damn that was good.

In a live situation I always use just a guitar and a Polytone Mini Brute 4 with some reverb. They are jazz amps really.

All eq on the amp is always flat and all pots on the guitar are open. I don't like adjusting sounds. I just plug in and play.

For my videos I record via a Digitech RP 300 amp modeller (preset "jazz"). That goes into a Behringer euro rack mixer. Same story there, no eq.

For my gear, I pay most attention to the guitars I select. Next to the 175, my other main guitar is a Gibson Tal Farlow. Both are really great guitars.

Dick

Thanks, yes the ES 175 is completely original. The classic 57 humbuckers are on my Tal Farlow too. I just love them.

Thanks, Scott. Yes, it's a lovely guitar. One of the nice things of playing jazz guitar is that you only need a good guitar and a Polytone amp.
