I was trying out an old princeton with white knobs in a local shop and noticed that the Pilot light dimmed and got brighter intermittently. Besides the power source, what else could cause this? I plugged a different vintage fender in the same socket and the pilot light did not do this. Of course when I plugged the Princeton back in I didn't notice it any more. I think I'm going to pass on the amp because it seems that it may have been swapped into a different cab. There seems to be a rather large space maybe a 1/4" between the bottom of the chassis and the top of the baffle. I think it came from a SF princeton because the SF's seem to have a slightly larger faceplate. There was no tube chart or signs of one either. When I turned it up it there was a fuzzy sound along with the regular guitar tone I think the speaker might be causing that. The Power cord was also a wimpy grey 2 prong cord. The price was only $559 on the tag and I might have been able to talk them into $550 out the door, but the Pilot light thing was the biggest barrier to my purchasing this amp. Any ideas about this?

It probably is the light fixture itself. This problem shows up with them ocassionally.$6 plus labor if that's what it is.
Have the store fix it and then check it out.
Frankly, the other problems would be what worried me the most.

I don't think there is a difference in the width of the faceplates. I think it is more indicative of a replaced baffle or repro cab. With poor tone and fading light (which could be a symptom of an overloaded filament winding), I'd pass real quick at $550.

I've been doing some research since I posted and am definitely going to pass. As for the difference in faceplate size, I directly compared it to some silverface amps and the SF's seemed to be a bit larger. I did not measure and it could just be that the silver color makes the panel seem bigger.
