Good thing they put those lyrics to such great music or it would have been the cheesiest Pink Floyd song ever.

The Floyd-->Best band ever.
Dad hooked me onto them when I was 3, 17 years later, I've never regretted it.

Gilmour is who got me into playing guitar.

Narcotics or hallucinogens? I don't associate Floyd with narcotics, more with marijuana and other hallucinogens.

DSOTM has to be the greatest album ever produced.

Fresno is crap....drive 2 hours west and you get to the wonderful city of Paso Robles, "Darn near paradise!"

When I come home cold and tired
It's good to smoke a bowl by the fire....:facepalm

I love the album, but I don't think "On the Run" held up as well as the rest of the album. Admittedly, by the time I first heard the album (1993 or 94) that type of electronica was a bit old hat so it didn't hit me as this futuristic sound that I imagine it did for kids in the 70s.

A little surprising to me to see people raggin' on Floyd's lyrics. Seriously? Maybe y'all should put a few of your own up here for scrutiny.

I can only take Floyd in very small doses... but they are great.. the songs create pictures in your mind ... oh man oh man.. their songs are like soundtracks to movies...

Cheesy? Perhaps, but being an impressionable teen, I used this as my obit for the graduating class section in my final high school yearbook... DSOTM had just come out the year before, and everyone I hung out with was pretty mesmerized by the album:

Run, rabbit run.
Dig that hole, forget the sun,
And when at last the work is done
Don't sit down it's time to dig another one.

I suppose I already knew that this would pretty much describe my entire adult life that followed high school! ;)

Gilmour killed me on this tune...and summarized a big part of my life, before I ever lived it.

Neat trick... ;)

To be honest, if you watch the documentary about the making of Dark Side of the Moon and Roger even confesses, "I don't know how I got away with it... It's all sorta lower sixth..."

Seen it many times and I get what he's saying. They're simple lyrics....I mean they aren't Desolation Row. However, they are still great, and you can't really analyse and critique the lyrics or music of one song on Dark Side....it's not meant to be heard that way imo.

Been a PF fan since the early 70's and never have I ever heard anyone call DSOTM's lyrics "cheesey." Profound? Genius? Perfect? Transcendant? Timeless? Many times.

I think Time has the best lyrics on the album:

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
It’s good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spell.
