View Full Version : Can my Power Engine 60 be converted to use add'l speakers and a closed back?

I've been playing a Line 6 XT Live for the last 6 years, mostly though a Tech 21 Power engine 60 1x12. I'm waiting on brown with my HD500 on Monday.

My only quibble with the PE60 is that it doesn't really move enough air on a stage. I initially thought of building a hinged baffle for the back that I can lower into place to make it - essentially - a closed-back cabinet. Then I got to wondering (because I understand next-to-nothing about amp principles) if the PE chassis could be removed and put into a 4x10 or 4x12 cabinet and work that way?

I don't really get how speaker impedances work and all that, so if anyone could tell me if I'm barking up the wrong tree, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

You know they used to make a 4x10 power engine. I think it was discontinued not too terribly long ago. You could probably find a dealer with one still in stock, or pick up a used one at a good price.

I assume that your Tech has one speaker output..probably 2 wires coming from the amp??..Look at the speaker impedance..should be on the back of the speaker, and that's the impedance you need to be at. So yes you could put all sorts of speakers to it as long as they are wired for the correct impedance..The speaker will either be 4, 8 or 16 ohms

This is even a better idea...!!

I would really take care in what speakers you use. Those power engines are supposed to be neutral. I've used my TM60 as a 'head' into an Avatar 4x12 with Celestion V30's, it didn't sound 'bad' per se, but the speakers definitely added another flavor to the amp.

I have wondered about at least putting the Tech 21 electronics in a larger and higher quality cab. That said, the other day I tried replacing the stock Celestion with a Jensen neodymium speaker I've had laying around. Used it at practice and the a gig last night. Man, maybe my ears are playing tricks on me, but it seemed to sound significantly better. Just richer, fuller ...

I'm sure some other speakers also might be worth a shot. For what it's worth...

p.s. I was running a Tech Blonde and Liverpool into the Power Engine (plus some overdrive pedals, effects etc...)

This is the route I went. I'll be very interested if Tech 21 comes out with a more powerful, FRFR Power Engine.

The PE60 is really designed to be a light weight (33 lbs) grab and go power amp and speaker combo. It can be used with any digital or tube modeler and obviously works quite well with our SansAmp line of products. Being that it is 60 watts and open back it won't be as powerful as a higher wattage unit into a closed back 412. It is very easy to daisy chain additional PE's for more volume and a bigger stereo sound. It would probably be cheaper and more feasible to buy a 2nd PE60 than to go though the bother of modifying one with another cab. Many online retailers carry these as well as the 410 model. One price I found online for a new PE60 was $339.

Thanks, and that's probably the route I'll go. My mind is just whirling with possibilities right now.

BTW - I love your products. I own a PE60, a Trademark 10 and a Tri-AC, and I used to own the XXL. Really well-made stuff.

BTW, Im on my 2nd week now with the 500 and the PE.
I run the 500 with AIR off, and CAB off. PE settings all 12-oclock.

Ive started playing with the 112 Cele cab (initially associated with the /13 amp).
The sound is real close (PE+no cab vs PE+112Cele), which of course seems obvious. I'd like to get a "standard" cab (active) into all my patches so that I dont need different settings for PE vs FRFR vs FOH vs headphone (via separate headphone amp). So far, this path is working out well.
