Classic 30 edge of break up tone?

Where I am playing this weekend I dont have the luxury to crank the clean channel 2 8ish to get that sweet spot.

I have experimented with trying to set the drive channel to a slight break up tone but it never really works out for me. ANyone ever get a Peavey Classic 30 to do this with out cranking the clean channel?

The drive channel will do it, but it has a bit of a nasally tone to it. with a 30 watt amp, you have to get it fairly loud to get to the edge. What I do is use the clean channel and run a very transparent drive set low for that sound. Something like a Boss BD2 or a Timmy.
