Should I have received a truss rod adjustment tool with my R8 when I purchased it new back in 2005? I know mine didn't come with one and am wondering if they normally do.

Maybe I'll contact Gibson and ask them to ship one out to me. :)

Yes. Where did you buy it?

My 07 R8 came with the truss rod wrench, but the last few more recent Gibson Custom Shop guitars that I bought did not.

Kmaz, If Gibson fails to provide you one let me know. I pretty sure I have an extra one I could send you.

skeeterbuck, that is very nice of you!

I just sent Gibson a request for the tool along with my address. I don't know what Gibson's Customer Service is like, but figured I had nothing to lose in asking.

Was this incorrect procedure? Should I have asked the Dealer first?

DonP, I bought the guitar from Center City Music in San Diego.

Well, Gibson has responded and they're not going to send me a truss rod tool. I paid about $3000 for that guitar! LOL!

skeeter, does your offer still stand? ;)

Tell us more! They said they won't send you a tool? That's very strange and not the answer I would've expected.

Did they just tell you to go to the dealer?

No, the fellow sent me a link to Stew Mac and suggested that I buy one there.

So bogus. My R9 I bought about 5 years ago came with one.

Let me get this straight....you bought it 6 years ago, you just now call them and demand a truss rod tool???? Why would they have any reason to send you the tool now????

I didn't mean to be a TOOL myself over this. I really didn't expect to get one, but thought it wouldn't hurt to ASK - not DEMAND. I did not demand anything from them.

And yes, I bought the guitar just over five years ago and thought I'd look into it after hearing about other owners who's R8s and R9s were shipped with the adjustment tool.

Doesn't hurt to ask, and sometimes it even pays. This time it didn't; no big deal. :)

Some of them came with a whole kit......including a cable and cloth....I forgot what else is in there as I stuck them in the closet.

I belive that stopped last year across the entire line.

My R8 Kit includes literature on setting string height, pickup height, intonation, pickup select, and T and V navigation. There is also a tall green booklet devoted to the famous Gibson truss rod and information on how to adjust it. As well, there are also Flyers for Mr. Dealer and Customer pertaining to characteristics and care for the guitar's finish.

Also thrown in are a Gibson polish cloth, cable, and three Gibson "Custom" picks. It all remains unopened in its original sealed plastic bag.

Hey, they may as well have thrown in that truss adjuster. :)

I'm not 100%, but I may have gotten a guitar strap also. Will have to look around.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there was no strap included.

You know, the neck on my R8 has been very stable. I believe it's only been adjusted once since I got it in '05. I had a tech do it, so the absent truss tool hasn't been an issue for me.

Some manufacturers are pretty good with this kind of thing, though. The pickup rings cracked on my H-150 and Heritage was kind enough to send some new ones to me. No serious cost, I'm sure, but I was quite impressed with the gesture.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is some kind of warranty issue. Gibson probably doesn't want people who don't know what they're doing screwing up guitar necks and then sending them back for repair under warranty. Unlike other adjustments, misadjusting a truss rod can seriously damage a guitar.

Drew, that's an interesting take on it. I've adjusted alot of Fender necks, but have never adjusted the neck on a Gibson.

It would take a seriously strong and/or moronic person to screw up a neck with a truss rod adjustment. I think the threads would strip or the wrench would bend first. first. As far as Gibson not sending a .35 cent wrench...WTF? a little goodwill goes a long way.

Always got them with every Gibson I've bought new and most used too.

The picks that come with the Historics are my favorites.

Yup. Pretty soon you'll have to provide your own strings as well. Cost cutting at its finest!
