View Full Version : Show me your black limba

Thanks to a generous birthday present from my long-term girlfriend, I'm embarking on another Warmoth project. It's going to be patterned closely after the EBMM Axis (sp?) but I'm seriously considering a solid black limba body along with the birdeye maple neck.

It seems like that's a popular and toneful combo around here, because I've seen a number of Thorns and such pop up in those woods.

Help me make up my mind - show me some pictures and tell me about your Black Limba guitars!

Thanks

Thorn #10. All time most astounding guitar I have ever played, bar none. It's all in the voice and tone. Every other guitar before and all I'll buy or sell since #10 is all pure gravy. This one guitar is my meat and potatos.
I own vintage ones, I own more expensive ones, but this guitar is just it.

Oh, and I like it too. :D

Weird, it's been over three hours, and Big Mike hasn't posted a picture of his yet... I hope he's alright!

Jim, that Swan back in Black Limba looks damn good. Too bad it increases the weight so much, uh?

rjd1guitar --- How do you find the tonal combo to work between the limba and maple on Thorn #30? They're both gorgeous, btw.

Dan --- limba is heavy? I thought it was generally lighter than mahogany. Is it just that it's lighter than the usual swamp ash used to make Swans?

Jim --- Slightly off subject, but your body style is killer. Every time I see a pic of one of your Swans, I think "that thing looks bad-ass."

Thanks all for the pics! Does anyone have any experience dying limba in colors other than the normal tobacco burst-type finish?

Yeah, Jim uses very light ash for his backs. Black Limba is typically heavier.

And I'm with you on the Swan body style. But it's secondary to all the innovations the Swan brings to the table. Still, it's definitely one of the reasons... ;)

Thanks! I did a pretty thorough tone report for #30 on the Thorn discussion page, but I can't seem to find it there. I think I may have saved it at home as a Word file - I'll check and if so shoot you an e-mail with it.

The black limba guitars pictured here are awesome! The look of the wood is great- what other reasons are there for making guitars out of black limba? Is it the tonal qualities, weight, etc? Also, how rare a wood is black limba?

I'm going to repeat what a well known builder recently told me at an Open House.....
He held up a piece of streaky, black limba and spoke of how lousy that wood was and laughed that other builders were featuring it. He said it was cheap and stuff that was previously considered unsellable by the better wood brokers. We guessed that it was maybe having it's '15 minutes of fame'.....
I donno, I really do like the look of the finished, black limba, Thorn stuff. The maker I spoke with would only build with light weight, white, clear (not mineral streaked) Limba/Korina.
Any other builders wanna chime in on this one??

I just got an email today from a supplier regarding a new shipment of B. Limba. I haven't work with it yet but I have W. Limba. Tone aside, B. limba is supposed to be much easier to work with. W. limba checks easily. The one time I did buy some B. limba (mail order) it arrived with huge splits throughout. Useless to me.

My first experience with black limba was sort of by accident. I was at a lumber yard and was going through some wood. I saw they had some black limba and I heard a lot of mixed reviews so I went to check it out for myself. I went to move this ugly looking, soot stained board out of the way so I could dig through to the better looking stuff and when moving it I knocked it on the racks and it let out a deep, rich sustained tone. I bought it on the spot. I took it home and sanded it up to produce this guitar (http://www.mykaguitars.com/instruments/001/default.htm). The tone was great. Much like mahogany but with more higher end (not as dark) and with a rich, complex harmonic character. I have made a few guitars now with it and I find it to be a very vesatile wood. The tones are always balanced and full with good growl in the lighter pieces. Toss is a cocobolo neck and you have IMO one of the best combos for rock/.blues/fusion.

Denyle, check out Gilmer Wood Company (http://www.gilmerwood.com/). They don't sell split wood.

Ironically I've decided to go with mahog/maple top for the Warmoth body in question, but after this thread I would definitely consider limba for my next guitar.

Black limba is an awesome wood.
It sounds a little different than white limba in my experience but they are both sweet and complex sounding woods.

Gregc,

I did not take that as an insult at all, and my apologies if I came across like I did. My point was that my earliest experience with the wood was a 3 year old guitar that the customer, to this day, claims is his soul mate. Certainly not a flash in the pan, flavor of the month, nothing but hype scenario.

I'd love to know who this builder was. And, how he feels about that cheap maple with all the imperfections that people go ga-ga for. I mean, maybe curly maple is having it's 15 minutes of fame? and claro walnut? and birdseye maple? and figured mahogany?

I don't want to spoil GregC's fun (I was at that open house too :)), but I will say that, despite that (IMO) silly opinion, this guy's company make some great guitars. They've just gotten a bit conservative in their old age :D.

While mine will pale in comparison to these fine guitars - here is a shot of a piece of limba that I just cut yesterday for a double cut LPjr that I am trying to make.

Now I need to figure out how to build the neck  . It will be my first attempt at building a neck. Right now I plan on using a piece of limba for the neck with either an ebony or rosewood fretboard. I have a bet with my wife on how many pieces I will screw up before getting it right.

This thread is killing me! I'm expecting a body and neck to get here possibly this week or next. Both are black limba, the neck having an ebony fretboard. The body will be an Ibanez JS shape, string through hardtail, H-H setup. The neck will be 25.5", 22 frets, assymetrical back profile, 10" radius, abalone dots. I'll be using all black hardware, and I'm not sure on the pickups yet (I have several here to try out, never played this wood before).

Beautiful examples here guys!
