Looking for a low gainer. Barber or tubescreamers do not grab me. I have a timmy but am interested in trying something different.

i voted honeybee, but if you dont get TS's, why not try a little green wonder?

What?
Honey Bee. Definitely Honey Bee.
Grab one off Bearfoot for the stupidly cheap price.

I love my SHOD and wouldn't trade it for a HoneyBee... if that's any consolation. I just love the character the SHOD has and how well it stacks w/ all my other pedals.
And judging by all the demos I've heard, it sounds a bit brighter than the HoneyBee, which is a good thing for me. :aok

Check out the Blackstone Appliance Mosfet OD. The brown channel is low gain, and the red channel is med gain. It is certainly not in the TS mode of overdrives.

Just got a JHS Morning Glory pedal today. Sounds pretty damn great so far. Would definitely meet your Low Gain, not TS needs.

Get the Bearfoot HB immediately if not sooner.
I can't stop playing it.

The SHOD is brighter and more aggressive than the HB - I had both at the same time and kept the HB.
Both are sweet pedals but I prefer the HB.
Also love the BD-2 (Keeley or stock) with the Gain OFF - very strong with great low end.
And the KOT and the KR Boost (extremely transparent). They all do the same thing for me but I can't remove any of these from my board - so I have 4 sitting there....

Which of the two would you say is better for strumming chords? I like the idea of the SHOD being brighter and aggressive if I can dial out the brightness if I need to.

Its been a couple years but I agree.
The shod is tighter and more cutting in the high end and less congested ( if thats possible ) in the low end.
It was designed to be more compatible with more amps and I love my shod.. Ive owned the hbod twice.
Its a eq thing.. like most od pedals I feel that its the strongest quality.

I kept the Fairfield Barbershop on my board over the Timmy.
It sounds great for driving a tube amp and the sag control is wonderful for a Neil Young-type feel.

I have both. The Sweet Honey is more aggressive and has more gain. Both pedals are touch sensitive to playing dynamics, but the Honey Bee does it better. You can get a nice clean out of the HB that I wasn't really able to with the SHOD.
My vote would be to get both.

Very true. And yes, set differently.. the hbod for a cleanish rythym and the shod for a medium/light gain solo texture. Interesting.

Catalinbread Silverkiss is an awesome low gainer.

...hard to say - both are dynamic.
Strumming cords is a touchy thing on the electric.
Probably depends on your setup / gain / taste etc, but the HB is warmer and gets my vote.

The hbod is thicker and the shod is tighter. Mostly its a low end thing.
They both can be warm but the shod has more on the top end when the tone is maxed out than the hbod does.

I think maybe I meant which can be more percussive. Maybe I'm just looking at the wrong two pedals

i have both and i think that the honey bee is a bit more "percussive" if you were gonna use that word. its a little darker/fatter and the sweet honey is a tad brighter/gainier. i like my honey bee a bit more, so my sweet honey is up for grabs in the emp.

Yeah I already moved my Honeybee... The Timmy and WIIO are my low and High gain rhythm pedals respectively. They just fit my playing better. Now I'm looking for a lead pedal.

To me the best low gainer is the venerable and long forgotten Lovepedal Lo Driver.
It's super dynamic, got this slight chewy, spongy feel like the Honey Bee but does exhibit very little fizz on the notes decay compared to the Honey Bee, also does not need a Nature knob to do the job and is/was much less expensive.
